I reuse old coroplast yard signs rather than buying new material. I spray paint it if I don't want to see the printing on it. 1. it's free or super cheap. 2. Repurposing something that would otherwise be thrown away, yay!

Thank you, Anne Laure, I discovered this video came just at the right time since I was wondering which sketchbook to take with me on holiday...I combined your tutorial with Oto Kano's recent tutorial of bookbinding a sketchbook. Et voilà, I had my own book, just the paper I like in just the size I needed which wouldn't have been possible without you great youtubers going to lenghts to share your passion with us. It is really appreciated!

Thank you for this tutorial. I was apprehensive at first to try and make it. But following your instructions was able to make one with ease! Your tip about what direction the "lines" should be orientated was extremely helpful!! It is so light weight. I LOVE it!! Made mine much smaller as I am not as brave as you while painting/sketching in public. 😊 Thank you for sharing your talent and tips. You are an inspiration.

Great video...just made one of these and glued sheets of white foam board inside for added strength. Instead of making a journal though I've used 7"x10" watercolour pad held in with a couple of small bulldog clips.

We made these for our urban sketchers in Santa Fe, NM. One of our members made an excellent addition: a small rectangular piece with magnets inset in both the board and the small piece to hold the metal palette, instead of bulldog clips. Duck tape holds the magnets in place. It fits on the top edge of the folio. I also use a palette cup clipped to the back cover to hold a small nalgene bottle of water so it is steady and nearby. Large elastic bands also hold the sketchbook inside so it doesn't fall out when carrying everything. This is a wonderful invention - thank you Anne Laure for sharing it with us!

I'm not sure how to post a picture to this format. However, I can describe how to make it. The size of the rectangular platform ( of coroplast) should be large enough to accommodate your palette. The longest side should be no longer than the width of your back cover, and 2-4" high to accommodate the palette. Inset 2 magnets about 1/2' in from the top edge of your platform and the back cover of your folio, wide enough apart so your palette fits over both magnets. I used craft magnets about 1" in diameter and 1/8" thick. You can use smaller ones. Be sure the magnets face the same direction in each piece so they will attract and hold. When not in use, the platform adheres to the inside cover of the folio. When ready to use, flip it so the platform sticks out from the interior back top of the folio. Your metal palette will be just above your sketchbook. Hope this helps.

Just stumbled into this amazing video 4 yrs later, but what a subtle and perfect idea that resolves so many nagging problems. It is lightweight, so enables one to make art more easily and frequently, without the dread of lugging stuff to and fro. But, even better, you bind up a full sheet or two of your very fav watercolor paper, and have what you love most and are most familiar with at hand. And then at the end, are you left with a pile of loose paintings or small booklets?! No! you bind them up all together into a lovely sketchbook. It all seems so obvious once someone breaks it down for you. (THANK YOU). I already have a signature of fabriano artistico ready to go from yrs ago, i never used it, wasn't sure how i wanted to proceed. I made a folding sketchboard yesterday (foam core board, didn't have coroplast). Now i know to bind all the finished signatures at the end. Simple, inexpensive, perfect. Life just got so much simpler. Thanx again. Def got a sub here ;)

Thank you for these videos for Urban Sketching and the board instructions. When I come to France I always bring my sketchbooks which take up room and are heavy! I used some fun printed duck tape to tape the spine and around the board, just for fun! This board and sheets of paper are so easy to pack. Your videos are so much fun to watch too. Merci bien encore!!

I decided to attach my homemade sketchbook (thank you for that instruction too!) with two rubber bands...one in the middle of each signature rather than the clips which became fiddly for me, and I'm really pleased with the outcome. The rubber bands stay on the "spine" of the cover and hold it quite securely.Yay!

Thank you for sharing. Always interesting to see all these handy tools urban sketchers come up with. I've used a plastic one and one made of natural board (the back of a cheap cupboard). I dislike the plastic one because I get sweaty hands. Heavy duty cardboard would also work but of course it's heavier than your gadget. 😀 Now I'm off to glue magnets to my bulldog clips. 💪🙂 Thanks for the tips.

Following the White Rabbit I tried making a tiny one with some scraps of heavyweight cardboard (from the back of a sketch pad). I didn’t make a spine piece, since I probably won’t leave my sketchbook signature inside of the board when it is closed. It works great so far! I am making a watercolor sketchbook following your wonderful tutorials (size A6, to fit in my fanny pack) and will probably make a board for it this way. Thank you again!

I made a similar thing from greyboard (the kind that bookbinders use) covered in gaffa tape to make it waterproof. I use a 20cm bulldog clip to stop it flopping in the middle, which means I have to carry a giant bulldog clip around. It’s the biggest thing in my arting bag, so big in fact that I have to clip it to the outside.😂😂

What a wonderful concept!! I’m so glad you made this tutorial for us, thank you!! 🙏🏻🙌🏻 it seemed like the store was a really far drive especially because you had it fast forward and it still took some time. I thought it was such a lovely visual doing that btw.👍🏻😎 On a side note, I ended up getting a clear glass cutting board from amazon, per this other KZbinr suggestion to paint on that helps decrease the buckling factor. But I was wondering why you and she both new that plastic or glass is better than wood to paint on for that. I forgot to ask the last time you suggested it. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet to see the difference because I’m painting in a massive sketchbook, and I hope to complete it before I go back to my single sheets. Many creative hugs 🤗 sent back to you. Have fun traveling and painting. I cannot wait to see more videos shared of yours. I absolutely love love love to get a new alert 🚨 of a video posted from you on here!! So exciting and so much fun! 😁😄😌😘 Traveling mercies to you my friend, enjoy!

Scarlett as I said earlier the plexiglas is useful only to paint wet in wet wetting both sides of the paper. It’s different from other materials because it doesn’t absorbs the water at all and it’s really smooth so the paper holds really flat on it. 😊 Thank you for your compliments about my videos my dear! 😃🙏

Following the White Rabbit ooohh! 😯 I missed the painting wet on “both sides” of the paper. I must have misunderstood, I recalled the wet on wet, just didn’t realize you meant to paint wet on both sides of the paper. Ah! Clarified for me, thank you! 🙏🏻 You’re more than welcome on the compliments. I just love your creativity, genius, and humor. Your videos are a joy to watch and I learn so much, but mostly I just love watching your paintings 🎨 come to life with such color, vibrancy, beauty, and life. It is a true honor and privilege that you share with us a little of your world through your eyes 👀 and it is indeed magical. 🤗🙌🏻🙏🏻😁

You can get “foam board” from Office Outlet www.officeoutlet.com/stationery/school-art-supplies/craft-supplies/cathedral-a4-foam-board-white-5pack/ in standard paper sizes. Perhaps not quite as rigid as coroplast but light and reasonably rigid. In packs of 5 so could make two covers using the remaining one for cutting spines.

Hi! So you've actually made the cover of a landscape dossier. If the concept is to hold with you a dossier then why not buy a hard covered clip dossier ( those with the catch that you use for notes at seminars etc) and fill it with your favorite watercolour paper cut to the appropriate size? They are available in A4 and A5 sizes at all office supply stores for something like 2 euros/dollars/pounds. And all them have hard covers.

Hakuna Matata, yeah, I am looking forward to do this tutorial too but there are so much things to shaaaaare!!! 😝 Hopefully in August! 😛 😃 You don't have to worry about the Patreon sharing, 😉 I have been working for months at trying to be able to create videos on the go FOR YOU, for the KZbin Channel, during the Symposium, so that's what I am going to do next week, so excited!! It's going to be a huge work so I slightly worry about it, but for sure that's really exciting. 😊 The tricky thing about the KZbin videos, though, is the editing. It take ages to select and put the clips together, along with music, nice rendering and everything. Which means that I can't do it everyday, it's too tedious. The difference, with the Patreon sharing, is that it's like Stories on Instagram, you shoot a shot video clip, it uploads, you shoot another one. There is no edit involved, just clips chronologically recorded. 😃 This inspires me a lot of my YT videos but I can't just put mindlessly the clips one after another here for KZbin, the expectation is different. So, sorry if what I wrote in the description box was not so clear but the things is : I am going to create vlogs on the go for the KZbin Channel. The most I can. Something like 4 during the Symposium, maybe 1 before, probably 2 after. That's a lot in 2 weeks 😅 I hope it will make you all happy!!! But, especially for some things or some days when I don't plan to make a video because it would be too much work with the editing, I will, like I am doing these days, share clips on the Patreon. 😊 Thoughts, things that inspire me, behind the scenes. Btw, I share some in public mode so you can watch them even without joining, and some in private mode that you can access paying 1$ a month (I earn 0.80€). Hope things are more clear now! Please be aware that what I am doing on Patreon doesn't remove ANYTHING from the channel. On the contrary, Patreon is the support that allows me to keep doing the things I love in here. It's just additional content I share out there that I wouldn't share anyway if there were on Patreon.

It is available on Amazon (not clear but white or black)... do a search for 'coroplast sign boards' also if you don't mind the printing on it, here in the USA this is what politicians use for political signs... you can get them free after the elections are over, the politicians appreciate you removing the signs, as they face fines for leaving them out too long and have to pay people to get them.
