This guy is at least honest. The key question is Whether the Reunification of China is worth the Fight? China/PRC/CCP has already gave answers to this Solemn question many times in the Past Against the most powerful military on earth, US in Korean War, Soviet in border war and India or Vietnam in border disputes. He clearly does not understand what held the Chinese together for thousands of years!

UN resolution 2758 resolved which side of Taiwan straight can represent the mainland China. That’s all. It does not resolve Taiwan’s sovereignty. In addition UN chapter has a clause stating 「people’s right of self- determination」。

33:53 This guy does not know what 跑得了和尚跑不了庙 means. So, he does not know how to read ancient Chinese. If he cannot directly read, for example, 尚书,春秋,左传,how can he be so arrogant and talk in public about China‘s civil war and China's unification? I watched this video, hoping to hear something insightful. But no, 夏虫语冰而已。

The best the US can do for Taiwan is to advise Taiwan not to act stupid and give the mainland a chance to squeeze her further. The US will not be in any position to defend Taiwan. That is a fact.

1. The US should state clearly to Taiwan authority that Taiwan is part of China and US will not support Taiwan in terms of military defense. Taiwan must find ways to merge with mainland China as soon as possible. This is in line with the spirit of Joint Communique between US and China for establishment of diplomatic tie.... 2. If US can show the whole world its gentleman act on this matter , it will gain very high respect.

The problem now is that the US has a lot to loose if Taiwan goes back to China. And so that means, big time, China has a corresponding gain in its overall power to add to just the national pride of achieving reunification. China will not start a war over it but we have some among us who might.

I feel confused when I heard one of the speaker said "China (or Xi) decided to isolated itself from the world". Isn't it the other way around? It is US that tried to isolate China, and strive for the other countries like Europe and Australians to join them, sometimes even by threat.

Orville Schell betrays his bias when he only uses the Japanese name Senkaku for what Chinese call the Diaoyu islands. Although Schell has been visiting China since the 70s, he has a strong ideological bias against China's political system. This is surprising for somebody who is supposedly an expert on China. An expert on Chinese history will recognize that China's political system today is to a large extent a continuation of past dynasties, and it is unrealistic to expect a big country with its own political tradition to suddenly adopt western political system, and nor should they just copy the West. They should find their own way forward. Schell only wants to see a China that is more like the West and sees nothing wrong with the current US policies of containment that are driving the risk of conflict. Schell also totally ignores the fact that Taiwan's pro-independence ruling party's push for independence is one major reason why tensions across the Taiwan strait is rising. Unification between mainland and Taiwan is a sacred goal not only for the communists, but also for the nationalists that ruled Taiwan. It's intricately linked to China's century of humiliation and the forging of the modern Chinese identity. Schell surely would know that it is false to portray this only as a communist party ideology instead of a Chinese national aspiration.

The so called “China” as a name for this far east Asia mainland is only 112 years. The rulers existed prior to that time had never called themselves “China”. The “great Chin empire” overthrown by the Republic of China (ROC) in 1912 was a foreign conqueror. The Yuan Empire was also a foreign invader and conqueror. So many other foreign nomads particularly from the north and northwestern Eurasia steppes, plundered and conquered the land for long long time. The history curriculum taught in the school of the current regime the People’s republic of China (PRC) has conveniently to combined all previous regimes as one unified one after the other successors. But it’s not true. In fact it’s being presented as such so to justify PRC as a rightful successor from those previous regime. But if one really studied the history and dig deep, one would know that it just not so. Please understand that Taiwan was a part of Japan during 1895 - 1945. In addition, PRC has never set foot and ruled Taiwan. Taiwan became a fully democratic country since 1996.

the complication is that presumably prc does not wish to damage taiwan, or kill its people. this suggests that recovering taiwan might be better done with some foreign affairs kung fu. a mutual defense treaty with mexico would be ideal. and cause a sigh of relief all the way to patagonia. cuba unlikely to be interested, having been left out to bleed, once khruschev got the missiles moved.

@@MS-ce8nr it is a new Era no longer Qing Dynasty in China. The traditional old fashion low degree of human culture of the west especially us culture that keep harming the world in the past several hundred years will no longer lead the world. Why? 80% of the world population, especially the global south know how low the civilization of the west was and is that only depends on guns and genocides. Even you talk a lot but could never erase that evil past of the west and up to now, still wars and killing every year. Nobody that is a real human beings will agree your views and position.

@@kcsfelix Are you aware that from the year 1950 to 1976, there were approximately 80 million Chinese died unnaturally due to political persecution, starvation, the campaign of Great Leap Forward, and the ten years of cultural revolution, and etc.,. Tibetan religious leader was driven out of Tibet, And the same can be said about what was going on the Inner Mongolia during 50’s and Uighur in past few years. Do you have any recollections regarding Tiananmen Square Massacre?

@@MS-ce8nr what you have said is a joke. China in that period even had some killing maybe even less than US police killing, gun killing, drug killing, prison killing and irresponsible virus policy killing in US every year. Moreover, the population kept growing in that period to 5 billion. Even all the parts you said inside China were having fast growing population. in comparasion, what suppression, genocide, killing and evil or devil existed or emerged would be same as those in US and Canada, or the land being conquered or invaded by the west. The US and Canada were owned by the Indians or Mexicans. Indians population was reduced from over 10 millions to now nearly no real local Indians anymore. The propaganda from the west always evil and wrong. Propaganda is not facts and news. The West media no longer a media but only political propaganda machine for the western government. It is a fact all people in the global south knows and even many of the 20% world population in the west know it too. you based on those propaganda to argue is unwise and funny.

@@kcsfelix what I quoted in my previous comments were derived from Chinese themselves, not from the west. 80 millions of unnatural death due to political persecutions, famines, failed socialist policies and the cultural revolution. The drastic reversal of communist policies in the late seventies were due to the rude awakening that the country was on brink of collapse. In addition, political leaders in Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia were murdered or driven out of China. You must understand that there is no propaganda here. You can log on to internet and search by yourself. Are you aware the fact that the population in India has surpassed China as we know it at this moment. The problem with the current regime in China is that it’s a authoritarian government. People don’t have freedom of speech. You may be arrested if you say anything against government. There is no free press so people within are isolated and controlled. There are many writings about the history in America. Many different opinions regarding the past. Readers can reach their own conclusions. It’s their rights.
