Here in Jersey City, NJ, Interstate 78 has 8 intersections with city streets. 4 streets but 8 intersections because east and westbound are 2 blocks away from each other. Also probably the only place where you see a 25 MPH speed limit on an interstate.
@goodmaro
@goodmaro 2 жыл бұрын
Well, that's what you get when you have a plan to put I-78 across lower Manhattan and then the East River and Brooklyn to connect to Conduit Blvd. And then pretend forever that that plan was still viable, although even after the Nassau Expwy. is built you give it NYS signage and numbering instead of the original that was either I-78 or an even-numbered parallel to it, because that's clearly never going to happen. Presumably upgrading those few blocks at the west end of the Holland Tun. was the least of the headaches and so just, you know, *assumed.*

Same as I-690 in Syracuse. It had an interchange next to fairgrounds that had a street light that I’ve had to stop for before. I think it has to do with the state fair, but Syracuse was not a city designed to have highways as seen with very weird and dangerous interchanges
@davidsturm7706
@davidsturm7706 2 жыл бұрын
That was only temporary during the State Fair each year. It was because they used a large lot that had no connection to the road network, so crossing over 690 was the only way to go. It no longer exists even as a temporary as bridges were built.

Check out the I-70 / US-30 / PA TPK I-76 in Breezewood Pennsylvania. The interstate and the Turnpike spur each dump onto US-30 each at their own traffic lighted intersection. And of course US-30 in-between is a stroad with several traffic lights and lined with highway businesses itself.
@scottwendt9575

At least it’s only a spur that everyone traveling cross country can ignore… we can just drive on by. Unlike I-70 in Breezewood PA where everyone traveling on I-70 to and from the east coast has no choice but to drive through several blocks of traffic lights and gas station and fast food entrances. Despicable that they aren’t forced to fix it. Bedford County says it’s just not on their radar as a priority and instead prefer almost everyone driving from the entire Midwest to our nation’s capital be forced to drive through their little tourist trap. I would say, no federal funds for any highways in their county until they fix it. PA has the majority of the remaining unconnected interstate system gaps as well as a good share of the route miles that don’t meet standards. I-70 to the west of the turnpike has ramps with stop signs and no merge lanes and miles with no shoulder or place to pull off in an emergency. And they have no excuses to not fix it because the area is mostly rolling countryside.
@crazydog1243

Don't forget that I-99 doesn't even connect to any other part of the Interstate system yet officially. It has it's own 'Breezewood' at it's southern end requiring usage of US-220 Business to connect with I-76/I-70 (PA Turnpike). And at it's northern end, it officially ends just shy of I-80 @ Musser Lane. However, at least PennDOT is working on fixing the northern end right now by converting it to a high-speed interchange, and building a new 'local' interchange on I-80 just to the east.

I-585 in Spartanburg South Carolina also starts at a diamond interchange with its parent interstate, I-85. The reason being is that 85 was upgraded on a new alignment which made the 1960's era old I-85 a business route. 585 was almost completely expanded but ends at a 4 way stoplight before the diamond interchange with 85. Very interesting to see strange exceptions to the highway standards.

Check out I-70 in Breezewood, PA. Traffic on westbound I-70 stops at a normal surface intersection with a traffic light, turns right onto U.S. 30, then turns right again onto an entrance ramp system with a toll plaza before it merges onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). Eastbound I-70 traffic does the same maneuver in reverse. Because there are gas stations, fast food outlets, and motels at the intersection, traffic tends to be insane.

And, because the Representative in Breezewood's Congressional District happens to be the Chairman of the House Transportation Committee (and has been Chairman forever), and because the prosperous businessmen of Breezewood are all his close, personal friends who ladle out generous, deep-pocketed campaign contributions, you can guess how much will ever be done to finish that.

The more benign explanation is that it's a legacy connection, the old Turnpike ramp to US 30, which is PA TPK up to the intersection. Except it can't still be that, since the TPK bypassed that part when they bypassed the Sideling Hill Tun. (instead of boring another, as they did with some of the others), which was *after* I-70 was built! In fact I-70 now uses some of the old legacy Turnpike (the rest of which is bike trail) to connect, more circuitously than before. You'd think that when they built the new alignment, they could've made a new separate interchange off it for US 30, and then one for I-70 direct to the old stub. Also the lack of the direct connection to the old Turnpike could be justified in its time as I-70's simply ending at Breezewood and picking up again at New Stanton, as long as none of the intervening Turnpike was designated I-70. They could always say they expected *another* alignment to parallel the Turnpike for I-70, especially once the Turnpike was designated I-76, since the Interstates "weren't supposed to have concurrencies". And then the old 70S-70N designations...they should just concede that the best use of numbering is so drivers can follow routes, not so the scheme looks scientific or artistic or anything. Somehow they managed to connect directly to Turnpike entrance ramps when they finished what's now I-376 to Monroeville; the Schuylkill Expressway was basically built as an extension from the Valley Forge exit; and I-476 likewise from the Northeast Extension interchange.

So I grew up in Cheyenne and know more about the story of this road. First, there are a good amount of people in town that comment on how it’s weird I-180 is called an “interstate” because yeah it’s just a 2-1-2 stroad into the downtown of Cheyenne. A huge reason it was built and signed as an interstate however was military. As you can see the north end of I-180 terminates at a large viaduct crossing a railyard. That railyard is actually one of the larger and more important ones in the United states because a lot of trains cross the Rockies through Cheyenne. Secondarily, Cheyenne is home to a very large ICBM Air Force base. When the interstates were built one of the original primary motivations was so that in case of war military equipment could be moved around quickly across the United States. So some powerful Wyoming politicians at the time pushed hard for I-180 to be signed as an interstate regardless if it met standards or not. That way, in case of a theoretical war against the US, the military would be able to take that federal road to the rail yard under control and supply the important base in town.

I hate that this freeway exists lol. It's like how I-99 violates the numbering rules. And I looked it up and found this freeway is concurrent with three other routes, including I-25 Business. So why does this freeway number even exist? Interesting. There are also many Non interstate highways that are built to interstate standards, especially in Michigan. US 23, US 127, US 131, US 31, M-6, M-10, M-39, and M-14. Some of these highways have speeds higher than many interstates. US-127 is 75 mph for over 100 miles, but it's basically empty so most people cover that stretch in little over an hour. Meanwhile, I 96 is set to 70 mph for it's entire length and you will struggle to meet that speed on many stretches due to traffic, so 100 miles takes almost twice as long.

John Wilson -- You're referring to the lovely town of Wallace, ID. Yes, there was a stop signal on the "Interstate" [was listed as "Temporary I-90"/US 10]. There were a few unpleasant words as to where the bypass would be routed. But, the bypass was completed. "Old Red, Green and Yellow" was officially laid to rest with full ceremony and bagpipe music on Sep 12, 1991. Its final resting place is 509 Bank St. Ironically, this "red light" outlived the other "Red Light" in town😜. DISCLAIMER: I once lived in the area [70s-80s]; so I was fully aware of the signal. I-10 between El Paso and Kent, Texas has at-grade intersections, which violate the rules for the Interstate Highway System. And I-5 between Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA has traffic signals, to stop traffic for bridge lifts on the Interstate Bridge over the Columbia River. They tried to design a replacement bridge with no lift span, but ended up spending billions of dollars without building anything that satisfied no one. A big problem is that the bridge is in close proximity to two airports (PDX and Pearson field in Vancouver, Washington), and it's very hard to build something that will not be a hazard to air navigation, as the final approach course for the parallel runways at PDX goes right over the bridge. Several marine facilities also depend on being able to move large ships on the Columbia through the bridge, and the proposed bridge design would have placed unacceptable limits on the height of river traffic.

Interstate 99 in Pennsylvania may be the only interstate on the U.S. mainland that does not directly connect via ramps to any other interstate. At I-99's southern end at Bedford PA, you have to go through two signalized intersections and a toll booth to connect to Interstates 70 & 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike). At I-99's northern end, there is an "End 99" sign at the end of the freeway before you get to the at-grade intersections for the ramps on and off I-80.

There is an official, legal way to designate and sign these "exceptions to the rules" in the Interstate Highway System for "business routes". They're supposed to have a white-on-green sign and the word "BUSINESS" in a shield the same shape as the rest of the Interstate signs, and then this I-180 would be up to code. Except it's then supposed to be a parallel connecting road, not a perpendicular spur, so there'd have to be another "I-180" off I-80 somewhere for this to be the business route of. But since there's no limit on how close it has to be, that could be an I-180 in another state!

Take a look at I-35 as it approaches the southern edge of the Twin Cities - there's stoplights and it massively slows down and there's frontage roads. Then it splits into I-35W and I-35E. It was always one of the things that we noted meant we had about 1-2 hours until we got home when my family lived in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities (all of our family lives in Iowa and we've since moved back to Iowa). Traffic varied a lot depending on whether or not there was a game and exactly what time we reached the Twin Cities - hence why it varied as much as an hour.

There in the middle of the Red Desert - a huge area of nothing but red soil and sage brush, is a spot where there is a place to simply drive left over the opposite lane to the frontage road. I’m from Cheyenne, although I love the idea of making it an actual interstate it’ll probably never happen because it’s one of the only major roads that connects downtown to south Cheyenne. There would have to be a freeway built above the landscape to connect the areas and that’s too much money and residents wouldn’t vote for the urbanization of the small city. People in Cheyenne already annoyed it’s becoming a popular northern city of the front range urban corridor

I 76 ends at an intersection with both left and right turn lanes and traffic signals just west of the I 71 interchange west of Akron Ohio. It the continues as US 224 a divided highway for 7 miles before becoming a 2 lane goat path across Ohio.

The city of San Diego released old footage from the early 70’s with a city employee driving through city streets with the camera on the dashboard. I-15 used to be in that category with traffic lights on a street once known as Murphy Canyon Road. It’s really interesting how much of a difference that section of I-15 is now compared to half a century ago.

Talk about I-840 in the Nashville area. It was originally a "state route" so they could build it cheaper and avoid federal guidelines. Same damn thing though, it was a limited access freeway, two lanes in each direction, 70mph speed limit, exits were designed just like an interstate freeway. Thing was since they cheaped out on the road construction, the bridges were pretty solid, but the 200' of road going up to the bridge was a real piece of shit that sank, causing cars to bobble over a huge bump when they hit the bridge. Then going thru western Williamson county they hit some opposition of wealthy land owners/NIMBY'S. Things got tied up for 10 years or so in the courts before they finally built the road, with special culverts to protect the streams and crayfish.

@@GeoHuman. just because it is signed as I-585 does not mean that it's legally designated as such. Legally, the stretch from Business I-85 (the OG I-85) to "new" I-85 is US-176. SCDOT took some liberties in signing this stretch of highway. Legally speaking, I-585 is an orphan interstate, not being connected to any other interstate highway.

Supposedly, there are more of these "rule-breaker" Interstates in Alaska and Puerto Rico. Closer to where I live, the U.S. 460 bypass in Blacksburg had an at-grade intersection with the back way into Virginia Tech (the way you'd get to their famous football field, Lane Stadium) until 2017 or 2018, when it was upgraded to an interchange. Also, a portion of U.S. 501 in Lynchburg is a "bypass" with just two lanes. Good luck using the passing zones there. D: (Yeah, these aren't Interstates, but they're close enough for me. ^^)

Pennsylvania has traffic lights on their interstates! 1: I-676 on the East end of “the trench” through Philly, joins 6th ST where there is a traffic light. 676 then hooks left for the approach to Ben Franklin Bridge, continuing on to New Jersey. 2: I-70 Breezewood, PA “dumps onto US-30 for about a quarter mile, where there is a traffic light at the Flying J Truck Stop, before ramping onto I-76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

At first, I thought you were going to talk about I-180 in Illinois. If it traveled all the way to Peoria, IL, it might make sense, but it just goes a few miles, and ends after it crosses the Illinois River. I heard it's the least traveled interstate in the country.

Basically, I-180 should be a state highway, but WY managed to get the Feds to fund it as though it's an interstate - probably because it connects to their state capital and thus makes it an important road. Without the interstate designation, the amount the Feds would spend on its maintenance would decrease (although highways do also get federal money - we talked about that locally for a debate on whether to rezone the portion of the Lincoln Highway that goes through our town).

I live in Cheyenne and growing up I always thought it was part of highway 85. But I noticed the street sign saying I -180 and I was so confused. Thought it was a special kind of interstate but no it’s just poorly designed and isn’t even an interstate. Closest thing I’ve seen to this was in rapid city SD ( a city the same size as Cheyenne) on I -190. But it follows all the rules you just stated in this video making it make more sense to be an actual interstate. It would be more convenient if I-180 didn’t have those intersections and also had a higher speed going into town like a good chunk of Wyoming 212 (college drive and four mile road)

It is possible the route for I-180 is on a existing road. The signs were put up and as they get funding over time it will be upgraded to interstate standards. This is what happened with two Interstates in Ohio. I-80 snd I-280. I-80 is the Ohio Turnpike, a toll road. It was built before the Interstate system. The tolls paid for the maintenance, and the bond that financed the initial construction. After that bond was paid off the road was suppose to become tool free. However the road wasn't designed and built to the Interstate standards. Not enough exits, improper radius in exit curves, grownd slopes to drainage ditches too steep and those ditches to close to the road. The drainage problem will require the state to buy more right of way to correct. So the US DOT, won't accept it into the Interstate system. So Ohio is forced into bonds to finance reconstruction and tools to pay the bonds and maintain the road. In the meantime, the state is making the changes in the road. I-280 is originally part of the Detroit-Toledo freeway. As late as into the 1980's it had a traffic light controlled intersection and a draw bridge that was more recently replaced wit a high level suspension bridge. Again this was because this road was built before the Interstate system was born.

Wow! I've never heard of I-180... but that's a hot mess! While I lived in Atlanta from 1992 - 2003... we had Neverending intestate construction.... and it's still going on. The HOV lanes were great... but not they're are "peach pass" lanes that are basically toll lanes on the intestate! ... not the whole road... just the far left lane! Crazy.... bc if you don't LIVE IN Atlanta, and are just passing through, you're not able to use the express lanes unless you know to apply for a Peach Pass account before driving through Atlanta.

It's not as infuriating as what Jacksonville used to do us. I think it was I-10 and the bulk of the interstate used to go down and hit an intersection, with only one raised bypass to avoid the intersection to "follow the rule". WTF! 5 lanes on one side and 5 lanes of the other side of I-10 have to stop at a SIGNAL LIGHT!!! Finally they built a bridge over the road but, really folks.
