@laura-ann.0726
@laura-ann.0726 11 ай бұрын
Depends on what type of campgrounds you like. If you are into US Forest Service, BLM, and National Park campgrounds, hardly any of these have hookups, and most are in such remote areas that there's no way you could go camping to them in an EV - none of them have enough range, especially if the campground you are talking about is in mountainous terrain, where the range of an EV is maybe half what you get in flat terrain. I love the idea of a camper-van version of the ID Buzz, as a successor to the old air-cooled VW micro-bus Vanagon, but the vast majority of State and Federal Park campgrounds, at least currently, simply have zero support for EV's. If the ID Buzz were a PHEV instead of a pure EV, it would be a GREAT base for a camper van conversion, but so far, the only PHEV mini-van in the US is being made by a company that has been through 3 different owners in recent years, and even when it was still "Chrysler corporation", the quality of their cars was arguably the worst of the three US manufacturers.

@@laura-ann.0726 Good points there. I know it's about US spec, but I live in Switzerland where everything is much closer, and it would be possible to top-up the battery just before going really up the mountain. So range is less of an issue. Also going up drains the battery, but going down recharges it so you don't need much to go back. For me it sounds ideal for trips of mostly 2-300km and 1 or 2 nights. In the US I imagine it's great for surfing, but not to go far into the wild.

Great review. I just really wish VW would consider a larger battery pack for the US. If we assume EPA at 250-260mi...you start driving this at 70mph, add 3 or 4 passengers and some cool/cold weather the range will easily be under 200mi. Thats kind of rough for a road trip. I really think 300mi is the minimum for a road trip vehicle...

Agreed! - however I do think they’re betting that 90% of the user’s travel will me shorter commutes in places with abundant charging networks. I personally would not buy an EV unless it had 500 miles range and 15-minute or shorter charging time.

Ya the detail on the heat pump is VERY important for efficiency in cold weather. I have some doubts about this one being able to do camping trips due to range without extra long top up stops with that big battery. What a cool car, I've seen them driving around where I live and it's the one and only electric car that I am actually excited about, it looks cool (I live in Europe) and it is cool. The fact that VW took an old iconic classic and converted it to a modern look is just so cool. The American version of the car is even better, so hopefully it will also cascade down to Europe. Most electric cars look just like.... cars. But this is the first one to actually create a buzz, and it's very aptly named. Great review, I've subbed, thanks.

Total cost: $950 for the bus, and $350 for a rebuilt engine (plus extra cooling stuff that VW didn't provide to keep it from self-destructing). So, for around $1500 total investment, I had reliable transportation that ran for more than 90,000 miles over the next 6 years, with proper maintenance!😉

VW has no idea how to build auto factories. VW's expansion plans crashed in 2017. Tesla bought Grohmann Engineering, limiting work to Tesla, so VW (and all the Germans, plus Ford and GM) was S.O.L. VW takes years to retrofit one factory - and their staff aren't skilled at building new ones. GM and Ford are worse. Jim Farley notes Ford opened its last new factory when he was 7 years old, before NASA landed a man on the Moon.

@@fabi-9971 I figured there were probably rules in place like that...I just think those rules should change. The Tesla model (and other start-ups like Rivian and Lucid) have such good and simple buying experiences that it would be hard for me to go deal with a dealership ever again.

Love the idea of VW and other manufacturers EV’s but I refuse to play into their games with stealerships. Tesla was by far the easiest and best vehicle purchase experience I’ve ever dealt with. Won’t be a victim at stealerships ever again long as I can help it. No hidden fees, no sleazy salespeople and general managers, etc…just a few clicks of the mouse, wait a couple of weeks, and then it’s even delivered to my driveway. No hidden nonsense or games

Kyle, great review, your the top automotive journalist these days covering EVs and all the technical details. Love how your holding manufacturers accountable to making these products practical for everyday use, keep it up. I’m definitely looking at trading in my Odyssey for one of these once they are available.

I'd love to do that too, with my Odyssey. However, I do think this beautiful van is going to cost almost twice what a base odyssey costs and that is just too high for me. Maybe a second generation Buzz will be more affordable, as by then batteries will likely cost much, much less than today.

I have to say it seems to be a pretty great vehicle. VW seem to be positioning it as a semi-luxury lifestyle entry and that's fine for now. I do hope that as EV batteries and tech in general become more mainstream the price will drop and that less fully optioned version will be offered. It's not that I can't afford expensive cars, I just don't want to pay for them as the value received never seems to match the money paid.

one of the real substantial improvements in the VW MEB is the new drive train that includes the new in-house developed motor with more oompf and efficiency and more efficient inverter as well. that will be rolled out to the id.4/5 and skoda enyaq and audi q4. i hope at some point for the id.3 too. that would be great. regarding the battery, VW need better modules. pretty much the same like 2019. that is a bit dated. they should add a more modern module as option with 17% more energy density to reach 100kWh net.

The design language and aesthetics are nice and it appears to be very utilitarian. However, the big question is how will it perform in the real world? And an equally big question is what about the issue of "market adjustments" by franchise dealers. Good luck getting it at MSRP especially when it launches. Due to federal and state dealer franchise laws VW has essentially no authority or control over what dealers end up charging. We see this happening with Ford EVs and other EV brands as well (except Tesla of course) which ends up crippling demand. Don't get your hopes up too high until the rubber meets the road and this vehicle has proven itself and matches expectations.
@chrisbeer324
@chrisbeer324 Жыл бұрын
The reason that dealers are marking up above MSRP is because the demand for these electric vehicles is so high. And, just for the record: MSRP stands for Manufacturer *SUGGESTED* Retail Price. Dealers are free to charge whatever the customer will pay. And since people are willing to pay more, dealers will charge more - that is how a free market works. I certainly don't want the US federal or state government interfering any more then they do with car dealerships. They have already messed things up enough - just look at the issues Tesla is having trying to sell direct. That is because the dealership lobbies have too much influence. I don't even want to consider what "government price controls" would look like with the current situation.

The difference is...they use Modules...if one gets weak you can exchange it partly...if the Battery in a Tesla gets weak you can only remove the entire Batterie...not really sustainable...and this Design decision takes space.

I completely agree that there should be camp mode. I don't have kids, but I'm really interested in this as a camper for frequent road trips and everyday commuting car. I would love a pet mode for popping into a shop too, but definitely the camp mode. Thanks for the suggestion that the lack of backseat tray might be about crash regulations. I was actually sad about it as I think they would be super handy (roadtrips). In Canada, so I'll have to see whether the three or two rows will be best for sleeping and camper use. Solar panel option would be great but I love sunroofs too.

Excellent review and video! I think this is one of the best reviews that I have EVER seen on any vehicle. I would consider a 5 seat ID. Buzz do you think they will do a 5 seater? To your knowledge are the 5 seat and 7 seat vehicles do they have the same wheelbase and overall length but one has the 7 seats added? I hope you do a part 2 and illustrate what driving it feels like etc. This kind of vehicle was not on my radar but now it is there is something about the feel and look of the vehicle that reminds me of the older school models but with a modern twist. What is interesting about that is the gas vehicles that tried to be old school was not able to nail it like the electric vehicles I wonder why. Good job!

Overall I love the Buzz. Wish they had gone with LFP battery pack. Wish they had gone with round headlights for a more retro look. Sliding door is a total failure. The whole point of a sliding door is to get more access into the vehicle. In the Buzz you actually get less than the standard door behind the driver's door.

@@xchopp look at this car, its the same as my old gte that have gone out of production years ago.. that is why nothing is changing.. they are still fighting with their bugs they did 15 years ago because they cant make good software (this buzz have a interface from a golf, they dont even know how to change it after that many years) and they just add a new screen.. the only new thing on this is the 110v/220 outlet i think diesel gate showed very well what costumers is to vw. and my experince with their dealers is also very bad, like many other people.. it have been no secret they have been blaming their costumers for their bugs on their software. and they did not work to solve anything by getting feedback from costumers for example.. most other companys would not put a expensive product on the marked with that bad a interface, and that many bugs as vw have done for over 10 years now.. im wondering what kyle is gaining from not showing that part of the story, because its a big part of many vw owners store over many years now. does he really think they will put a 100% working interface on the buzz, like he says. we all kow he knows lots of people that have talked to him about this problem, but it is forgotten when the cars are promoted for vw by him

I've used both and I've got to say, I'd much rather have no OPD than have it but not be able to turn it off and coast. Ideally it should be user selectable with paddles on the wheel. Not having it is a questionable software decision by the Germans, not being able to turn it off is a questionable decision by Tesla.
