Those scorch marks on the top of that case before cleaning gave me shivers. I owned one of those boards, ended up selling the system who knows how many years ago but back then I used to love Gigabyte boards. Quite the restoration, end result looks great. And definitely not useless. I have a couple Xeon systems from around the same time currently running my NAS and proxmox servers, finally getting around to upgrading them but considering what I paid for them and the use I got out of them I'll be kind of sad to retire them.

This was probably one of the last eras where gigabyte was good. From z170 onwards I’ve had but problems with them. I just recently bought a Z77x-UP5-TH for a build. I didn’t need to go that high end, but it was one of the only silver z77 boards.

I would suggest using an ultrasonic cleaning for such greasy and dirty components. That could also remove possible dirt from underneath the chips, where the brush and isopropyl could not. Anyway, great work!

That computer was in a smokers environment, reason for the brown stains. I've done this many times for parts I had given to me from a friend who smokes in his house. He saved me quite a bit of money thru the years when he upgraded his computers. I never complained about it, I just took the parts and cleaned them up and used them. Most parts were good, a few didn't work out so well. What I discovered on cleaning motherboards is to hold them up right vertical position on a towel, and using a spray bottle with 92 percent alcohol, spray it clean. Start from the top of the board and spray until you get to the bottom and all that junk runs downhill on the towel leaving the board spotless. Repeat if necessary while having everything completely apart, GPU's included, then reassemble. Some hardware parts can be soaked in bleach water then rinsed, it will melt away nicotine stains like magic in seconds and requires no scrubbing looking like new, fans included, then bone dried off.

Ngl, I've been using an AMD FX PC I got from the recycling center, which was about to be thrown out quite a bit, and it's not a bad system, especially for basic web browsing. it plays minecraft pretty well so far and it definitely play roblox very well too. It also can play teardown at a fairly decent performance. it essentially can do light gaming. It has an AMD FX-6300, 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3, 256 GB NVMe, R9 270X, and ASRock 970a-g/3.1. It's able to run windows 11 pretty well despite it's age, which shows how absurd their fake requirements are.

Sandy and Ivy Bridge are true warriors and can still bring a lot of joy today. Enthusiasts even change the BIOS of these cards so that we can boot with NVME SSDs on the PCI-E adapter. I did this on a Sabbertooth Z77 with i5-3470.

I much more appreciate cable management in difficult cases than cases which essentially make it no effort. Honestly I'd rather have thinner cases than cable management caverns. My windows 7 PC which I built in 2010 is 170mm wide, pretty much just wide enough to fit a 92mm fan exhaust and no more. I ran the 24-pin between the motherboard and the motherboard tray, which is possible when the cables aren't sleeved. Fantastic build man!

You can clean motherboards in the sink, completely immersing them in hot soapy water and use various brushes (paintbrush, toothbrush) for different areas, or even put them in a dishwasher. But be careful of the socket, use the original cover if you have it and clean it separately using a artist's watercolour brush and isopropyl. Give it a final rinse in warm distilled water if you're OCD like me! Whichever method, the CMOS battery has to be out and make VERY sure to give it time to air-dry thoroughly (maybe 48 hours, or a several hours in a warm c. 60°C oven).

Not bad - with 2nd gen i5 CPU, this PC is certainly NOT useless. With a decent SSD as its boot drive (I would pick Crucial MX500 500GB), as well as a decent hard drive (2TB) and 32GB RAM, this would still be a pretty decent computer nowadays for basic tasks, and for games from around this PC's era.

I've recently upgraded my modern gaming pc (5600x+RX6600) from 16gb 3200MHz to 32Gb 3600Mhz and apart from Hogwarts Legacy, no games that I have tested made the *total* ram usage (with Windows 11, which manages to use more ram than Win10) to cross over the 16Gb mark, so yes, 32Gb in that pc is definitely overkill and unnecessary, even with it being cheap. Also, you do not need 32Gb for "basic tasks". A better idea would be to have only solid-state storage, and maybe upgrading the CPU, since the motherboard is good and support up to a 3rd gen Core-i7. And definitely staying in Windows 10.
