I could see that if we're 2 or 3 years away from a WC, but this time with a new, foreign coach one year away (and hosting, no less): don't waste a camp, and bring in the best available. Any one (or more) of our Euro players could have a season-ending injury and we'd have to replace with whomever is best *now*, not expected-to-be-three-years-from-now. And Poch needs to be familiar with these guys. And really, any U23 player should earn the call-up. We had a unique situation going from a Lost Generation immediately to a Golden Generation, so we replaced the team wholesale. But we're now finding out some aren't quite as golden as we thought. Altidore was banished while Sargent was anointed. Sargent's career trajectory now is looking similar to Jozy's. I realize Altidore was becoming injury-prone at that time, but it's the off-the-top-of-my-head example. If we anoint U23s before they are actually better than their elders - does it really help them develop, or does it artificially inflate their ego?

Clicked with the caveat that Tim Ream still deserves a call up for what he brings to any USMNT locker room, especially because our options after McKenzie, Richards, and Trusty fall off a cliff, but also his leadership.

I Would rather have those players continue with their clubs. But I get it…this is a waste of roster talent. I’d rather see our younger Euro developmental players and potential under 20 in MLs etc. but taking our best talent off their European clubs for these friendlies is counter productive too.

From purely a fan perspective, I ask myself "Would I rather have something to watch or have nothing to watch?" Gives me a chance to watch the Stars and Stripes, even though it's not our A, B, or even C team really. Gives these young MLSers a chance to make it the legit team. And gives me something to watch and cheer for.

Steffen's 3rd consecutive call up, and other(s) were not just friendlies. I want to see him between the pipes, YES, A LOT GA FOR CO., BUT... he was left on an island for a good atleast 1/2 of those. Why do you think CO. brought I'm Reggie Cannon and bought 2 more CBs on the offseason ALL after selling Moise Bombito.? Give the veteran man a chance in a friendly for FU(× sake!

Regardless of if I like it or not, the answer is no. Especially this time with Poch only having 18 months until WC 26. He needs EVERY opportunity to get a good look at all talent available, yes, even from MLS and yes, even past players. They can perform better or differently under a competent manager like Poch than under GGG. We get 1-2 weeks of training, not like 3-4 days before matches so Poch really gets a good look at these players.

Why? We already have a U-23 camp this January?
@SanFranFan30
@SanFranFan30 23 күн бұрын
@@alexandermantooth185 We have a U20 camp and a U19 camp. Not U23, because the U23 age group isn't used in any FIFA or CONCACAF tournament. The U23 age group is exclusively for the Olympics and technically doesn't really exist when not in an Olympic cycle. The Reason for turning this camp into a U23 tournament is to showcase young American talent who are getting MLS and USL playing time who have potential to either get a bigger move to Europe or to hopefully for them make the actual USMNT senior team.
@alexandermantooth185
@alexandermantooth185 23 күн бұрын
@SanFranFan30 Isn't that what this camp is plus a few veterans? I guess I don't have a problem making it U-23, but getting rid of it all together doesn't really accomplish anything. And I think there's something to be said for having local players play for the NT every now and then. I know I'll tune in just to see Jones, Arfsten, and Schulte.

@IsaacHenryinAK 23 күн бұрын
Tac, you're generally correct. You do, though, TBF, make the case FOR camp cupcake in this piece. It doesn't have a lot of value, but it does have some value. I agree about bringing in younger players, but also bringing in someone like Tim Ream, with his level of experience over many years in Europe/EPL, could have a positive effect on our younger MLS player's development. That sort of thing also makes the camp worthwhile and is a reason to bring in older players who are in decline, but still playing. How often do 16-18 year old players in the MLS get to chat/practice/ask questions of EPL (former or current) players? Especially as a team mate...
@pronational02
@pronational02 23 күн бұрын
1. Because it occurs in January it will always be a MLS heavy roster going forward. That is due to more and more US players actively playing abroad. 2. So it just deserves a different focus than what it use to. a. For Pochetino it is where he can test and practice his training and coaching for a tournament schedule. This is a good thing. b. It allows Pochetino to view future prospects and potential backups to the A team when a demand arises. Right now the GK situation is competitive and not in stone. Future injuries or bad form always requires a first and second backup. c. Fringe or future international players begin to learn the mentality, system and demands. Can they apply it to their club seasons and climb toward the A team roster? d. Potential opportunity for players not starting or being rostered on their European clubs. e. It is a bridge from u23 and lower to work directly with the head coach and staff. f. Jimmy Conrad used it and made the best of it to break into the A team and into a World Cup roster. g. There are players on this roster worth testing and for Pochetino to get first hand experience to see if they can rise to the challenge. h. Needs a different nickname. "Camp Cupcake" Does it no favors. i. Is there another camp opportunity we are sacrificing over this one? No. So take what you can get and make the best of it.

The camp should be retained. However, it should be focused for the time being more towards younger players to evaluate their potential. It not only provides a insight into players progress but will give the USMNT the opportunity to give feedback on how they need to improve and what kinds of opportunities they could expect at a higher level league. I agree that having more than a few older MLS players is a waste of the camp's utility. Over time however, as MLS becomes stronger there will be a time where better US players will be playing in MLS so the value of the camp will start to increase. I think we are at a low point in the balance between European players and MLS but at some point I could see that starting to change post 27.

I do not think it should be a U23 camp on the two years prior to the World Cup. You may find a crafty veteran and need to have some familiarity with the national team set-up. And not sure why you are bothered by Jesus scoring 3 goals against a lesser opponent. That’s what we want to punish teams that are lesser. But having it only U23 completely kills late developing players or getting looks at positions of need. Our CB situation and back up fullback situation is not settled. There are roster spots available.

@@TacticalManagerif I remember correctly, you stated it should end BUT, since we can’t (for reasons you mentioned with the TV slots). Jurgen suggested it etc. My point is, believe it or not, perception matters. Imagine being a player and you get called up only to hear everyone tell you this camp doesn’t matter. That its more obligatory than anything else. Diminishes the call up. I apologize for the basement comment but I suppose it’s right in line with what I am ranting about (obviously it matters what you say or else I wouldn’t have watched your video or Herc wouldn’t come on it right). Look, in my opinions these players really have an uphill battle. Constantly hearing MLS is a joke league, inferior, retirement, etc. Some might even start late in the game (college draft which is also painted as such a negative thing). The academies “suck” (for those who came through it). If they make it to Europe, having to break through that stigma (I suggest watching Pulisic documentary and what he says/feels about that). If we don’t hype each other up, or our players, who will? Now I am not saying give participation trophies either. I’d use you as an example. “Hey man, great job starting this podcast, keeping it going!! Providing us with great USMNT and MLS content since it’s so limited right now. It’s getting better and better!” Unlike “Damn I guess I’ll watch this guy in his living room since there isn’t anything else out there. Might as well make the best of it even though it should probably be ESPN.” Words matter and how we present things matter. The pictures, the titles on content etc. (I don’t think Jesus would be thrilled about being next to a cupcake). Let’s speak life to each other brotha! Myself included! So again, apologies for going off and offending you right from the get go.
