The V8 Is Dead | Why I'm Building The Ultimate Overlanding Lexus GX460

With the advancement in technology in the automotive industry, the V8 is all but dead, and that's why we've chosen the Lexus GX460 as our next long-term, purpose-built overlanding, and off-road adventure vehicle. Our plan for this overland build is simple, and in our opinion, we picked the perfect platform to depend on for weeks-long overland trips and hardcore off-road trails with the ability to get us home. The Lexus GX460 has the perfect combination of off-road guts and modern amenities without the overuse of large infotainment screens and a lack of buttons. The GX460 is an American version of the coveted Land Cruiser Prado which gives this platform exactly what it needs to be a comfortable long-range overland vehicle and the toughness of a hardcore off-roader.

My 3rd gen has over 350,000 miles, and the compression numbers are still great! I did.adjust the valves recently and replaced all of the sensors around the motor. Toyotas are just known and renowned to last forever. Have fun and be safe as usual.👍

Good choice! Just passed a year with my GX460. Slowly building it out, but it is great. Everything you said you want from it, it does. Although, I'm interested to see your thoughts on the climate controls. Probably my only gripe with this car haha. If you are ever in Utah let's wheel!

My GX470 finally bit the dust on me (head gaskets and didn't want to put the money into that old/high mileage of a car). Thought I'd get into a 4Runner, but when used 4Runner prices are almost the same as a GX460 when comparing similar years and miles, I'm really looking at getting back into a GX. Sure it doesn't have that off-roader look to it when stock, but for the 99% of the time you're going to be using it on the road, it's a better choice.

I know the gx is already built via Facebook but I went from a fairly built 13 4runner trail to a 15 gx. I plan on building it tastfully while hopefully not loosing to much of the smooth quietness of this thing. Can't wait to watch the other vids, thank you tons and next time in down in Cleveland I'll have to check you guys out. I'm in toledo! 🤙

I found your channel because I was / am interested in getting a Subaru Outback wilderness and I want to overbuild it in a practical and useful way though I will probably never need any of the upgrades in my life since I’m a city driver. That said I really like your channel and am learning about over landing. I am really looking forward to your Lexus build over the next few weeks months. Also I admire you and your family’s willingness to explore all these places on the fringe of modern civilization IMO.

Higher displacement/cylinder engines have less of a reduction in efficiency under higher load when compared to smaller turbo engines. For sure the V8 is thirsty, but a turbo 4 cylinder can also be thirsty approaching GVWR with a tent on the roof, etc.

My GX 460 gets 20 mpg on the highway and 12.5 to 14.5 mpg in town. I have a lot of traffic lights where I live. It has some extra weight on it too. I have installed Rock Sliders, a Heavy front bumper, a winch, and a roof rack. I will be adding a rear bumper and a drawer system also.
