Read Vagabonding years ago after discovering The 4 Hour Workweek in a bookstore. Both books really shifted my perspective and have had a lasting impact on me. Excited to dive into this interview.

So to respond to the bit about staying in a hostel nowadays, I'm just a couple years younger than you Tim, and just spent a weekend in a hostel in Hue, Vietnam. Not a single traveler was interested in having convos outside of their phones or their group of friends. People have become 100% reliant on their phones not just for entertainment, but for information and ideas. The idea of the expert Hostel worker seems to have gone out the window, in favor of "just Google it" and "hey siri, where should I go to eat?" It was pretty disheartening, as my prior experiences have always been the opposite of this. Post-COVID travel in itself is a whole new experience, because the attitudes within different communities and sectors of the global population have shifted. As my guest house host in HCMC told me, many of the people in Vietnam realized they prefer having their country back to simpler times and slower pace...and minus the tourists. And many of the younger generation just got really comfortable with the idea of not working for 2 full years. Idk to what extent that is true across any group of people or not. My Vietnam experience this time around has been somewhat heartbreaking compared to when I was here in 2019 just before COVID, but it's really given me a chance to do a lot of reflection. Vietnam will always have a special place in my heart, but it seems best to leave for now and wait to revisit until I get my own head on straight, and the country has had a chance to readjust to the massive tourism that fuels the majority of the economy

And yeah, Couchsurfing is not the same as it was 10, or even 5 years ago. For lack of better expression, it "sold out"

Unfortunately that is the world that we live in. I would suggest smaller cities in Mexico Colombia and Brazil. You need to know the local language but the stuff that you described doesn't exist there. Much more grounded family-oriented bunch of people who smile at you when you walk down the street and they are not glued to their phones. You have to be willing to go into some not dangerous but a bit uncomfortable areas.

I was just thinking of Rofl and the first mention he got about vagabonding more than a decade ago on the blog and realized I haven't heard much about him lately. What a pleasant surprise to see the episode!

Technology can also HELP social interaction when travelling, from Couch Surfing hangouts, finding other meetups - or in a hostel in greece I stayed in recently they had a hostel Whats App group where people could co-ordinate hanging out. It works both ways.

Wait, Tim... you play guitar!? Come to my channel and Jam! 20 minutes in and this interview has me stoked about upcoming travel. I *am" that guy who will interrupt someone phone surfing in the hostel lobby. Couchsurfing is indeed a lost sport. One of my favorite CS stays was on a sailboat off Puget Sound. "Geo-arbitrage" - living in the American Midwest as a more cost-effective mode has definitely come into my mind as of late. "...the Algorithm is smarter than all of us " Telling a woman "If you can cook like you walk, I'll marry you right now." I gotta learn how to Piropos before I get back to España.

I feel like there is too much emphasis being placed on people being on their phones while traveling. Maybe it's just me - because I am someone who is not on their phone all the time, and I would never go to Paris like you said and sit on my phone.. or in a hostel.. there's no way. I have a hard time remembering to get my phone out for pictures when I'm somewhere really cool. (I'm only 20 minutes in so maybe this is addressed later)

I think the trip has to be a need because it's like drinking a lot of water, it makes you sick...It can be applied to travel. 🙂

I love that *uncertainty...but most don't. The (mobile) web helps most "travelers" do the same same things, places smh. Imo travel was much better, say, pre 2012.

Yeah! I was born in kansas!.. every traveler should become aware that the p l a i n of jars in the Golden Triangle is most likely an ancient work of art honoring the Opium poppy. The jars are poppy pod shaped, and are mysteriously scattered randomly, like p o p p i e s in a field... that they are for burials is almost a conspiracy of misinformation... go look at pictures of Hill tribe opium Harvest, and Hill tribe culture.
