They were terrible for hygiene and would lead to the spread of diseases but they were a type of toilet that this world would have. There would also be things like bedpan and other bucket like toilets which would just be disposed of on the street into the gutter but this would likely be the option in alienages and impoverished regions and even then they might do communal toilets which were a thing in the medieval period. Living in the forest wouldn't be substantially better as you would be at just a high risk with disease but due to it being harder to separate the natural work from food and water but those with training like the dalish would have would be able to avoid these dangers at a better rate but it would require alot of effort and they would be just at risk of a simple wound or meal being their death though magic does make it easier to survive in this period and we also see the development of non magical medicine/surgery in inquisition.

On the topic of Fen'Harel not having markings... it is possible that some were made to "honor" him as one of the Creators, but he did not approve of them. In "Dragon Age: The Masked Empire", Felassan is noted to have unique/unusual vallaslin. [I think it's page 72?] What if he had Fen'Harel's? Also, I think that Fenris' lyrium tattoos are Fen'Harel's vallaslin design. Why else would Danarius name Leto his "Little Wolf"?
@jennifercook31306 жыл бұрын
I think, he named him "little wolf" because after the ritual fenris was like his dog (only living for his master). Once Fenris is talking about the ritual, he tells, that the markings are made with lyrium. I think this lyrium is making its own way throu the skin. It isnt like painting a vallasin on the skin.

@@jennifercook3130 i wouldnt be surprised to that being the "true" way of making the markings.... since the purpouse was slavery, and thats what they did to fenris. since the dailish lost a lot of knowledge, the ones who still pledge allegiance to the "gods" would mark themselfs in honour, the way they could, with blood.

Probably obvious others but still made me "mrhm."
@swtormadness6 жыл бұрын
Oh! Mythal bless you! I was actually trying to convey on tumblr the same thing about the vallaslins - that IT'S HIGHLY POSSIBLE that each clan have their own artistic style of making markings or that even a certain Keepers have their own styles as well, which can differ from the previous Keepers styles. Also the whole Solas agenda that "markings are bad" kinda infuriates me, because culture changes and with culture the parts of this culture like meanings change as well. Dalish elves changed the meaning of the vallaslins in their favor, but he doesn't want to acknowledge that, as if it was still bad, because he remembers their origin. WTF, Solas.
@xXSakuraTearsXx6 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it even really matters to him all that much. The writer for Solas said that when he takes the Inquisitor to the waterfall to talk with her he actually planned to tell her the truth about himself and everything. He just chickens out and says something about the vallaslin instead. What he says is true mind you but I don’t think it’s actually a huge deal in his mind regardless because he didn’t actually plan to ever say anything to her about it in the first place.

Jake M. I honestly don’t see a problem with letting the inquisitor know because the thing is, that was the original meaning. If that matters to the inquisitor she has a right to know and make the decision to get rid of it. Then on the other hand if all that matters is what it means now then she keeps it. I don’t see any harm in it either way. He simply told her the truth and he doesn’t give her a hard time if she chooses to keep it. The original origin of a thing can matter to someone. On the other hand it might not.
@xXSakuraTearsXx5 жыл бұрын
Jake M. I don’t think it was because he was uncomfortable. I think he told the inquisitor because if it were him he would want to know. Like I said before he was originally there to tell her who he was so maybe it was something he had been thinking about telling her but just split second went with because he backed out telling her the other. I don’t understand how he had no right to tell her though. If you mean he had no right to remove it. He didn’t do it against her will. He only does it if she wants him to. He says that he shouldn’t have if it hurts the inquisitor. I think he’s prbly saying maybe he should have thought it through more and maybe that’s what he thinks. That’s fine but I think I would prefer to know the origin if I were the inquisitor. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be upsetting but I think I’d prefer to know. I could be wrong though because I’m not a Dalish elf. lol To each their own though. Bottom line I don’t think Solas was meaning any ill will on the inquisitor. I believe he really loves her. I think he has a messed up mindset on destroying the world but that is besides the point. lol

Just a guess, but I think it's possible that you may have gotten the DAO versions of Mythal and Dirthamen mixed up. Not much to go on of course but if you look at the DAO design you've proposed for Mythal, you might note that there's what looks like an open book above the bridge of the nose, between the brows. An open book seems like a likely symbol for the god of knowledge and (this may be a bit of a stretch) the fact that the pages are blank could mean it also doubles as the symbol for secrets. The similarity of the motifs could just be an expression of familial relationship, since Dirthamen is after all supposedly a child of Mythal.
@cussundriakneal99046 жыл бұрын
Well, no, because in Inquisition, there were actual ancient elves that served directly Mythal, and the Well of Sorrows, and every single one of those elves within the Temple of Mythal had the leaveless tree design upon their faces. So that one is directly associated with Mythal, as we saw NPCs wearing them.

Hi! Thank you for the info! However, it's arguable that Vallaslin of Dirthamen and Falon'Din should be swapped and/or have been mistakenly swapped as the two are twins (who knows) Arguably, that is why you may have been unsure as to what exactly the twisting and tree-like figures meant on Falon'Din's Vallaslin. In-fact, it is reported that Dirthamen is a "mamma's boy", according to Dragon Age Wiki: "Dirthamen gave to elves the gift of knowledge and taught them loyalty and faith in family." This makes sense when you take into account the similarities of Mythal and (in this video you labelled it as Falon'Din's) Dirthamen's respective Vallaslin. I know this video is three years old but... I care about lore XD. Also. the things you described as "outstretched birds" under the impression that Dirthamen's Vallaslin was Falon'Din's could be representative of bones, as-in dead bodies. This is just an opinion based on symbolic study and just artistic expression in-general.

I wanted to make a canon male character in DA3 to avoid all characters being female in the three games but the romance with Solas reveals more about the elves and makes the story in DA4 more interesting because Solas is the enemy. I hope that with the new writer in charge we can see a Warden come back. The next conflict is between elves and all others and since my Warden is a dalish elf she should get a cameo (any race should get it). She would never support Solas of course because Alistair. :3 :D Also the Halla... beautiful creatures. Judging by your avatar you think so too. Your voice is really soothing my dalish sister. Keep it coming. :)

Origins and DA2 is not about elvhen things. It's more about humans - Ferelden, the Chantry and it's issues. :)

@@darthportus Origins literally deals with primarily the Wardens and the Blight..? Which is mostly human oridented? Inquisition is the only DA game that really went ham on the Elven aspect. So...?
@cussundriakneal99046 жыл бұрын
@Hurlock: I completely agree with you, on the Solas aspect part of the story. Which is why i'm making my Dalish Elf be my true story line going into DA4, because the story with the Herald of Andraste being in love with the bad guy - and he her - is just too good to pass up. I can't bring myself to hate Solas; he's just too bad of a antagonist for me to hate.

The Dalish are so desperate to preserve tradition that they end up clinging to horrible traditions that should be forgotten, such as the Vallaslin, tattoos that branded you as a slave back when they worshipped the Evanuris. I love the Dalish and given the choice I'd rather be Dalish than a City Elf, but they're a fantastic example as to why traditionalism isn't always a good thing.

@rosecoloredambitions all elven marking represent a god or role, the tree represents mythal, it's why you see the ancient sentinel elves in mythal's temple with the half tree on their faces.

With Solas in the end of Dragon Age Inquisition we learn that the Elven gods were actually mages of phenomenal power but they had reduced the Elves weaker to the slave state. The dreamers, the weaker magi and other were the representatives of the tyrant pseudo-gods and formed the aristocracy as the magisters. 99.5% of the elves had the statue of serf, slaves or servants.
