So glad to hear the Sherlock stories in the narration that reflects the culture. Better than my internal American English interpretation would be. Something gets lost in the reading translation of a person's inner voice, and hearing the works in their natural linguistic context really allows one to appreciate the works more. Super job. Thank you.

I didn't see anyone below mention it, so I'll note that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based the plot of this story on a real story. The real bad guys were the Molly Maguires, and I think the real Pinkerton agent may have been named McParlan (not sure 'bout the last). Anyway, I still intend to read the story written by the actual Pinkerton agent! (I just checked -- the Pinkerton agent was named: James McParland)

I had listened to part 1 well before part 2 was recorded. I then let it slip my mind until part 2 showed up on my suggestion line up. I had to listen to part 1 again which was as wonderful as the first time around. As Douglas had gone overboard and no body recovered, I can’t help but hope that the old Pinkerton Detective and the English Legend managed to get another one over on Moriarty. Yes, I know it’s a piece of fiction but I still want the good guys to win as from where I sit in the US, the good guys, when they can be found at all, are struggling to keep there head above water. The Scours (sp?) have over run the halls of justice and are thoroughly stinking up the place.

Conan Doyle really didn't seem comfortable writing Holmes novels, other than the Hound of the Baskervilles they are little more than short stories, wrapped around another story. Yes, but then the whole Americans-are-violent section would have been hard to work in, and the story would have been too short to publish as a novel. But if Holmes HAD acted as you suggest, Moriarty probably would have failed.
@martavdz49722 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was my first thought! But I think he knew Moriarty would have found out anyway. Holmes suggested Moriarty had a spy in the house (probably one of the servants), and the spy would have found out and told Moriarty what actually happened.
