My dad got me a leatherman wave for Christmas just before I started my first job. I'll never forget the first time I used it. Was on top of a 30,000L tank and a washer got stuck on the thread of the lids closure. My trainer was about to walk back to the tool box to get some plliers when I pulled out my leatherman and got the washer free just like that. To which my trainer exclaimed "nothing beats a leatherman, I've got one at home". It was in that moment I realised how useful a multitool is and how important it is to actually carry it.

My wife made fun of me for carrying one until maybe the ninth ir tenth time it helped us out in a pinch. Sure, the tools aren't the best. But they do work, and when you're out on a boat or on vacation and you need a tool, boy is it nice to bust out a knife, can opener, screw driver, and complete an otherwise impossible task.

A million years ago, younger me used to work in maintenance,, warehousing and stuff like that where I did a lot of cutting, assembly, etc. Older me drives a desk, but I still carry at least a small multitool or Swiss Army Knife and I use it constantly. Plenty of things that have to be opened, tightened and adjusted even in fluorescent cubicle hell (monitor stands need constant tension adjustments, all kinds of containers break and refuse to open, pulls on drawers coming loose, etc.). I keep a more capable tool like a Wave in my bag, and I don't have to bust that out very often but when I do it saves so much headache. I even take a Style PS if I have to fly. The TSA hasn't taken it yet, but they sure do scrutinize that little thing LOL Surge, Blast, Spirit and Swisstool X are my favorites ever, it's hard to say which one I like best though the Surge/Swisstool are definitely more capable, I take them with me if I'm going somewhere for a prolonged period of time, provided I'm not flying.

I think the fundamental word is, which tool YOU need in your day to day or work. And even the white collar has variations, mainly due to the environment, for me the Victorinox are the most ACCEPTABLE and with reservations. A Leatherman Micra for me would be great, but again, it wouldn't look good in my everyday environment, so I carry a Small Tinker with me at all times. As important as which tools are going to be useful for YOU, is knowing if you can use them in the environment without problems (something I've seen happen and it was pretty bad). Great video and excellent work.

Multitools are the words practical and portable combined into a tool that fits into your pocket. I give more value to my Spirit X, than any of my super expensive dedicated tools. Why, because it offers a huge amount of "more" than any of them will ever do. There are jobs, that a simple multitool can save tons of time, energy, solve a lot of problems and in the same time, it makes you the savior of the day, into the eyes of your co-workers, if not of your boss too! I am an office kinda person. And i prefer victorinox for my need. It can handle my daily task 95%. The only thing i grab my LT is when i use pliers. But then i have knipex pliers which imo is a lot nicer to use than the LT. So i really seldom use my LT for my edc. But edc is part of my hobby. So i collect many of SAKs and also LTs. The question i would more to consider is...whether i should carry MT or folders. I have many folding knifes from different brands. But tbh..i tend to carry my SAK more than my knife. Not sure why but MT (like SAKs) make me feel more safer when i am in need of using tool rather than only knife. 😁 but dedicated knifes are really addicting. Design. Material used. Makes me want to buy again and again.

Of course major projects require more significant tools, but a Wave at my home office desk has saved me countless trips to the basement where the "real" tools are kept. It is also on my belt and very useful when I'm cleaning the house or doing yard work. The only tool on it that I find useless is the little eyeglass drivers. I do wear glasses, but the weight of the Wave makes control of that tiny driver difficult. For that I'll make the trip to the basement for the precision screwdriver set.

Also, if a Phillips head is at the edge of a tool and the side closest to the implement is facing the wall, the Phillips head can be paired with a hammer to act as a mini flatbar. It’s come in very useful for demo work and this mechanism is one of the very few cases where a Wave would make a heavier-duty tool than even a Surge (since the small Phillips head is closest to the edge and the large one is in the middle).

Hopefully some people browsing these comments give MTs a chance after some of these thoughts here. TX did a great job explaining his position. I've got a couple cents to add. My feeling on the multitool (MT), as with most things in life, is if you're the type who wakes up every day and just tries to haphazardly survive it then you're probably not going to get much out of a MT or EDC in general. But if you approach the day with purpose, with conscientious reflection on what you need to bring to the table in order to make shit happen, then a MT will naturally fall into place. I work in the labour field as well, waterworks utility, and I agree that a MT will never replace a tool crib/service truck/job box.. ok, no big revelation there. But that's not what a MT is for, nor has it ever been claimed as such. Multitools are for filling in the gaps; those pesky little holes in the attack you mount on a project. A multitool will never be your artillery gun line or your cavalry charge; it's the company of mercenary skirmishes who sit there and protect the rear corners of your advance. They don't get any credit, they often don't even get into the fight, but you never go to war without them because they'll save your ass in a pinch. If I'm progressing down 3 blocks of city street with full underground locate gear (transmitter, receiver, wires, ground stake, hammer), paint stick, and a spare can of paint in my back pocket -- and I need to strip tracer wire, file some paint off a fire hydrant, and turn a screw on a wire clamp.. why the hell would I want to add a pair of rebar pliers, a file, and a screwdriver to the rig I'm already carrying? Worse, why would I want to walk 3 blocks back to my truck to get them when a medium-sized Leatherman in my pocket will accomplish all three tasks then disappear again? What if I'm in a trench installing a mainline water valve? Of course I'm never going to even dream of doing that with a MT.. but at the very end when I realize buddy whatshisname forgot to put a flat head screwdriver in the tool bucket for hooking up the tracer wire, I'm going to look like a donkey standing there shouting for a driver while he goes and digs one out of the truck when any multitool from a small SAK to a full sized LM will afford me the capability of turning a damn screw without crying about it. Like I said, guys seem to get so focused on the big task that they assume if a MT can't do the whole job, then it can't be useful at any point during the job either. But as given in the example from the video, imagine the look on your foreman's face when you're walking all the way across a jobsite (again) to get a stupid screwdriver from the trailer just to open a panel because you didn't expect to have to open it at the outset. Tell you this for free: guys be out here preaching that "common sense ain't so common" but then turn their nose up at an 8oz MT on their hip or a 2oz SAK in their pocket that can save all kinds of steps and minutes walking back to the truck. Come on fellas!

My EDC the last few years has been the Surge + Crunch, before that the Wave, MP600, and other older style ones. They'll never replace a dedicated tool but they weren't designed to. But can they save your butt in a pinch, absolutely. If you're 40 feet up working somewhere or tucked down in a crawl space or laying on your back and shoulders under a dash and you just need to clip a wire or crimp something or tighten up a few screws or a fluid line, cut open a wrapped box, name it they always come in handy. That's why I bet many of us who carry them religiously at work carry something at home too. Depending on my day at home I'll grab my Charge/Wave or maybe my Skeletool, something to slip in a jeans pocket. If I'm going camping or fishing my Signal. It's endless the good reasons to carry one. I've been traveling and my car broke down and I had to tighten a hose clamp or some simple little something to get back home. If I hadn't had my multitool I probably would have had to call someone. Anyway I know I'm ranting but I, like you, have always been a firm believer in carrying one. Take care.

As always, very comprehensive and well articulated analysis! My main EDC at work is the Surge, and when I go out, I tote the Wave. However, I always carry a Victorninox Fieldmaster on my keychain as an auxilliary multitool. With that being said, I think that Leatherman makes the best plier based MTs, whereas Victorinox scale-type MTs are the gold standard.

I use a Gerber Center Drive religiously. I’ve modded it, I carry high strength bits from Milwaukee, thumb stud on the 3.5” 14C28N blade, and upgraded cutters. Anytime I whip that bad boy out, someone immediately asks me where they can get one. Super convenient, affordable, semi customizable, amazing.

Watching the videos here and Max Lvl EDC, you might want to modify a LM to hold a 4mm driver, and certainly their pouches have room for bits.

Ben, THRILLED to see you back with a new vid. I find a mix of VNox Ranger (belt) SOG Power Pint (T-shirt pocket,) and a Nexttool Mini Flagship in my coin purse works best for me. Today I zip tied an automotive pick-up tool to my walking stick with the 90 degree Sofirin flashlight on it. Tightened ties with SOG, cut ends with the excellent Nextool scissors, and chamfered cut tie ends with file on Ranger. Did this while waiting for a friend at a restaurant. Am not in trades, but always seem to be fiddling with some small project. Free P2 only when headed to a large project or on the road. On the EDC bag I keep a spare Chinese Wave clone, mostly for reasons of reaching it while sitting, AND if I need to give one away, I don't waste a Leatherman. I leave a Surge and a Gerber 600 on the outside of my bug out bag, and rarely use em, but sure is handy/heavy when I do... Leatherman lives matter! When time allows, please review that Chinese Wave/Signal clone. Looks interesting for an outdoors type tool. Too heavy for urban EDC, I think.

Very well presented case for carrying a multi tool! Plenty of times where they are plenty good enough for the task at hand. Can’t say I’ve ever wrecked anything or injured myself worse than normal using a multi tool. Common sense dictates whether I’m fixing or going for better tools.

I've been a paramedic for many years and have been using a Gerber multitool for most of that time, as you said they will never replace a tool kit but hot do small repairs on the run they're great. Only issue I've had with the Gerber is the design of the blade causes them to to snap through tbe finger nail slot if you twist the blade too much, although they honour their lifetime guarantee you now have to post the whole tool back to the USA for repairs ( I'm in Australia)

Love the assessments, always enjoy your videos. I would make a case for the squirt ps4 as having high value. Besides the surge and skeletool in my pack, the squirt on my keychain gets a ton of daily use. The squirt's spring loaded pliers make excellent tweezers as the nose of the jaws come together perfectly with no gap.

The T4 has everything one needs, nothing one doesn’t with tools that are actually useable and can be opened under any circumstances, unlike any of the SAK which are hard to open and whose tools are awkward to use (punch dagger screwdriver???) at best.

I do relate a lot wiht this video because I did discover that choosing the correct multi tool for your use is important. I have worked on both blue collar and white collar jobs, in my case I tend to gravitate towards Victorinox swiss army knives. When I used to work at a blue collar job, maintenance for an automotive company, I carried a Victorinox Swiss Champ and it got me out of lots of different situations, it was great, but, it fell out of my grace when I transitioned to a white collar job, it felt too big and uncomfortable to carry, that was until I decided to see which tools were the ones I used the most in the office, right then and there I bought a Victorinox Explorer, then, I changed its scales for the Swiss Champ's to add a pen, and man it is so much comfortable and useful, so much so that other people started buying their own swiss army knives at the office because they would always ask me to lend them mine nad they liked it.

I'm using leatherman since 1994 working as an event technician. I startet out with a leatherman super tool. These days i use a rebar knifeless. It keeps the rebar even more compact and saves weight. As a benefit it hast a pair of scissors. Best solution for me, i'm carrying a folder anyway.

If I know what I need I usually carry a combination of a Multitool and a dedicated tool. Example like a ratcheting screwdriver or Knipex and a Wave. Better ergonomics. Otherwise I just carry an MT. Your statements are right on target.

As much as I would like to have more versatility as a "white collar technician", it seems I do already have the best solution with my Skeletool CX (and a Surge in the backpack). I was looking into the OHT but I would also have to somehow integrate a Clip PLUS the bits are an issue, I basically need Philips and 25 Torx every day.

I'm a helpdesk manager for a large corporation. Like the standard techs below me, I roll up my sleeves and will get down and dirty when I can. My EDC? Leatherman Surge all day every day, I used to carry A Gerber Multitool. The Surge Has more useful tools and is more robust in design fit and finish. The Surge gives me confidence that everything I may need. Without having to go back to my desk, open my backpack and pull out my Dewalt belt carry tools pouch with a ton Of hand tools, tape measure, and a place to put the Surge as well. If you can stomach carrying a heavy and BIG Multitool, Surge Is for you.

Firm believer that everyone should carry a pocket knife or multi tool, including women. Was teased by the other women when I showed up at church to help decorate for Christmas with my Leatherman. Snipping and twisting wire, cutting rope, opening boxes, twisting little screws to replace batteries, it came in very handy. Wasn’t long before the other ladies stopped teasing me and asked to borrow it. I purchased inexpensive used ones dedicated to my car, my cleaning supply bucket at home and even a Supertool in our home emergency/disaster bag.

I have a few multi tools and would keep one in my carry bag everyday (Gerber suspension) and keep my Leatherman Wingman at home for use. But now I found the perfect portable multi tool for me to carry in my pocket which is the Gerber Armbar Slim Drive. I don't even notice it. Though now I am curious would the extra thickness of the normal Armbar have been an issue to carry? Hmmm. I like the hammer feature.

"A multitool is not going to take the place of your dedicated tools" I think it depends what do you need that multitool for. In a blue collar urban setting the right multitool (a Victorinox Compact or a keychain size Manager for example) can absolutely take the place of a dedicated pen, dedicated scissors, dedicated box cutter etc.

I’ve found over the years that if I pull out my Leatherman Wave to work on something the average person gets a little uncomfortable but if I use my Victorinox Super Tinker they are perfectly find with it. Of course most of those people don’t have a clue what a Robby red screwdriver is. So my rule of thumb if I’m dealing with white collar people (sheltered) Victorinox. Blue collar people (secure adults) I carry my Leatherman on my hip.

FYI, there are SAK's with a sawblade. You don't have to buy a Leatherman for that tool. You can, but... Anyway, the Leatherman is a bit too big for me to carry it in my pocket daily. I prefer the SAK. The Micra and CX CS are pretty cool though. However, I already have those tools on my SAK. And the knife (blade) is also bit bigger on the SAK.
