Not totally powerless, as without the cane Missi becomes human again while Duke is STILL a vampire without it..also the cane seems to be alive and as long as Missi has anger at Duke the cane may have control over her since when she gave it up in part 4 she became human..until she got angry and wanted the power of the cane to get back at Duke again.

Also, Daria has stated that Duke sans cane has more raw power than Missy does, he was just caught off guard by the fact she was so proficient with it

I'm quite fond of the idea that the whole dance sequence at the start of "The Showdown" was basically both of them showing that they could physically keep up with each other, so it wasn't going to be a cakewalk for either of them. Sort of a test to see if either of them were in any real danger from the other, with both of them realising "Yeah, no, they're up to my level"

I remain astonished by the ungodly amount of spite held within Missy’s rapidly shriveling heart. Killing Duke wasn’t enough, so she brought him back just so she could torment him for a bit and then kick him out of his own house, but even *that* wasn’t enough, and just the sight of him out the window drives her into such a maddening rage that she will give up on everything else in her life purely for the sake of hurting him just a bit more. It’s honestly just sad.

Well that cane isn't helping it's literally called the anger cane. There is a series by a friend of hers that is a prequel set way in the past explaining a part of that world's lore
