This season finale is one of my favorites. I always appreciate how after Elena mentions that maybe if they had met first, Damon just said ‘yeah maybe’ and he doesn’t tell her that they actually did or use that to influence her decision/manipulate her. Bonnie was 5 steps ahead when she put Klaus in Tyler’s body. S2 “It’s always gonna be stefan” --> S3 “I can’t think about always. All I can think about is right now”

AJ putting Elena in his top 3 at first, exactly! I was like “Let him speak, he’s right” 😂 Idk I feel like some people misunderstand her character and what drives her actions. It’s interesting how I’ve seen some people call her bland yet she’s a character that many people have a hard time figuring out lol. I love Elena but I know not everyone likes the same characters. Bc of her compassion, it makes sense for her to struggle with choosing a brother. There’s no way for one of them to not get hurt and it can be stressful to watch but once you hear how she describes each brother it makes sense why she’s struggling to pick. Elena has in a couple occasions seemingly connected her love for stefan to the death of her parents. She mentions him coming into her life when she didn’t feel like she knew how to live anymore and she calls being with Stefan safe. She previously told Matt that it’s as if she found comfort in knowing that being with him meant that she wouldn’t experience loneliness or a loss like she did with her parents bc he would never die. The way she describes being with Stefan and Damon is so different. With Damon, she says he got under her skin when she least expected him to. She says being with him consumes her. Stefan is what’s comfortable and he came into her life at a time when she was grieving. She has comfort/the known vs something consuming/but unknown.

I'm not going to say my opinions because it concerns information that happens in seasons they haven't gotten to yet. But I would agree... in the seasons that they've covered thus far. I stop resonating with her pretty soon after this season 💆‍♀

i think people hate her because they like to put the blame on her for situations literally out of her control instead of holding stefan or damon accountable they like to blame elena for every bad thing because it was 'in the name of protecting elena' not realizing elena tries all the time to save the ones she loves (s2 she tried to sacrifice herself the whole season hello?) but again, stefan and damon stop her from doing it they blame her for grams death, they blame her for bonnie's mom becoming a vampire and the list goes on when elena would not and did not want any of that to happen in the first place and as far as the love triangle thing goes, they love to make the middle person confused but keep in mind she is not playing them on purpose like katherine did she just genuinely is stuck between what is safe/her friends approval and what is more dangerous/her friends disapproval, i think she wants to be with damon since the beginning of season 3 it's just when no one is actually backing you up it's a hard decision to make because i do believe she still has feelings for stefan but it isn't what it was and then people hate her for the rebekah thing and as a rebekah and elena stan you can absolutely like both and not have to pick sides, they both have very valid reasons for not liking each other and i don't blame for elena doing that because rebekah would have ruined the plans and we all know it because of her love for klaus despite everything also, elena still felt guilty about it but at that point it was her being a blood slave for kalus and him threatening all her family/friends lives constantly or making a girl she didn't know that well go to sleep, like please be serious rebekah is also valid for not liking the act obviously too but it's not like elena maliciously did it for fun yes, she caught her in a vulnerable moment but elena's a literal human how elese would she stake an original vampire without dying? and then the last complaint is somehow that elena is selfish because the first point i had above that people die for her likes that's somehow her fault or makes things about her when the show is literally supposed to be centered around her which is why the conversations become about her and that elena 'cries too much' as if you wouldn't cry that much when that many people died around you , she's not a psychopath and yeah, she sometimes gets jealous and has human emotions that aren't postive 100% of the time but why do people overlook that in caroline but never in elena? it's called being human or err. now vampire with heightened emotions which makes the worst traits worse

Honestly the witch stuff is what I liked most of the show. I wished they had hone deeper into it. But at the time the show fans hated the magic stuff and wanted it gone. That's why next season bonnie goes through her journey. As a way to minimize the magic on the show.

Facts, thats the only thing I dislike about this episode besides Damon almost being left to die alone had Klaus been killed fr. Elena was conscious and Stefan easily could have ripped her belt off and carry Matt to the surface while she followed behind. That IMO was poor writing from the team because it wasn’t realistic at all.

I genuinely don't get why people hate on Elena so much. People hate on her for being a "mary-sue perfect girl that everyone loves". But then hate her for making mistakes or being flawed. I personally think she is one of my favorite protagonists in any show because she is a compassionate person but is very indecisive about herself and her decisions. She's just a flawed teenager trying to figure out her life after her parents died when she gets thrown into a supernatural world. I don't always agree/support her choices, but I can understand them

I also think the amount of hate is too much, because she is a coherent character and she acts in a logical way, but to be honest, I understand her not being in the top list. It was the times, but nowadays people aren't that down with the damsel in distress trope. Elena is basically the embodiment of that trope. She has no other purpose than to be saved (and to be stuck between the boys). It doesn't help that she has less spark than almost all characters in the show (Matt is obvious excluded haha). It would have helped if they had chosen one or the other. Bland personality or damsel in distress, not both.

@@gianellab.4953 A damsel in distress waits to be saved and that’s not what Elena does, if anything she tries to save her friends multiple times and she tries to resolve whatever issue the group is facing. She’s the doppelgänger and a huge chunk of the plots in the show revolve around her so I don’t agree that her only purpose is being between the boys. Finding her bland is subjective but I agree that she’s overhated.

I agree, she does try to help herself and others, but 8/10 she doesn't actually succeed in anything and the boys (or Bonnie) have to save the day. Even her being a doppelgänger is just a way to justify her being in danger all.the.time. I'm not saying female leads have to be wonder woman or anything, it's fine to be vulnerable. But when you're always the one who needs saving and protection, it gets old. If they'd made her personality better I think it would have helped. Or given her more depth. By the end of the day, all TVD characters have dislikable aspects. I think what makes her harder to swallow for some is that she has too many all at once. That being said, anyone who puts her in the least favorite characters is going too far. She's no Vicky haha

@@gianellab.4953 Spoilers I’d say Elena was pretty successful in saving her friends with her negotiations, the information she gets out of people, and in situations such as when she stopped Alaric from continuing to hurt them at the school. The other characters have saved people but they have also created bigger issues in some of their attempts to help out or their plans have failed so not having your efforts go as intended happens to more than just Elena. Imo Elena has a good personality and she has depth but I’ve noticed that some people seem to think that for a female character to be interesting she has to be a mean girl. Some of the characters I see people enjoy are characters that have s|ut shamed/judged others or a character that is manipulative and puts herself above everyone else without any consideration of how her actions impact other people. Every identifying thing about the characters plays into their roles in the show. Yes Elena is a doppelgänger, which means she’s constantly in danger, but it’s the same way that Bonnie being a Bennett makes people constantly need her magic. Even who Matt is later plays a role with the bell in s8 and Stefan being a doppelgänger in s5. I wouldn’t say Elena has more flaws than any of the other characters do but I respect your opinion on her, finding her interesting or bland is your interpretation. Yeah, I’m not a fan of Vicky either 😭

@@skylar6709 Vicky's the worst haha I mean, you're right. There is definitely a trend in the West to make "savage" = cool, interesting. I watch lots of eastern shows and appreciate the diversity of personalities (for girls, at least). And although I still find Elena is lacking in character and depth (compared to these non-"cool" Chinese or Korean female leads), I agree it is a question of individual preference. I was just trying to make sense of her lack of popularity. By the end of the day, Bonnie is not generally "savage" but the reactors don't hate on her as much. I think it also has to do with Elena's specific personality and her role in the series.

Vampire Elena era incoming :) The fact that the person Jeremy calls when Elena is in the hospital is Damon 😌 Elena having to re-experience a car accident at the same bridge but this time making sure that the other person got out. She selflessly made sure that Matt was taken before her and bc of that she died. Damon actually being the one to meet Elena first is everything. He wanted her to get everything she wanted out of life…MY PEOPLE How Damon looked when Alaric was dying, “you are not dead”, and then he opened the hospital doors hurrying to look for Elena bc if Alaric died then that meant something had happened to her 😭 So excited for s4 reactions!!

First off...you guys are fantastic! The show has 2 main characters: Elena and the brothers (as one). You feel she is selfish because the stories are centered around her. You have to remember she is not a 32 yr old lady with life experience just f'ing with guy's feelings. She has known Matt since they were babies. They were first crush and bf/gf. She's in HS and starts to not understand she is outgrowing her feelings but loves him like family and doesn't want to hurt him. She hasn't been through breaking up with someone. With Stefan...she was all in but when he turned into the Ripper...he was cruel at the same time she was leaning on Damon as they worked to get Stefan back. Feelings shifted with Stefan not being himself and Damon being a friend to her. They are like 170 years old...give her a break! Lol. Can't wait for more!!! You guys are the best!!!!

I read this comment on the internet some time ago and I absolutely agree with everything they said. I feel like more people need to acknowledge this so I'm just putting this out here- "I always thought that Stefan respecting Elena's choice has more to do with Stefan himself, than with Elena or his feelings for her. He did what she asked because of his own past experiences that taught him to value the idea of free will. He even says earlier in this episode when he was talking to Matt "Nothing wrong with free will. You don't realise that until you lose it." Stefan knows this better than anyone, because he has been on both sides of it. He has been the one to take the choice away from someone (forcing Damon to complete the transition to becoming a vampire), and he has been the one whose choice was taken away(Klaus forcing Stefan to drink human blood, to be his slave, to feed on Elena, to turn his humanity off). Stefan has been on both sides of the argument and both times it ended really painfully for him(Damon hating him and promising him an eternity of misery; almost losing Elena because of the consequences of what Klaus put him through). After all that, it's very much in character of Stefan to let Elena choose for herself. Anything else goes against what he's learned and experienced during his life."

I know it seems selfish and boring and unreasonable how Elena feels about the two of them. But I've been in a love triangle and I can tell you it's confusing, exhausting and a boring situation for everyone involved. So this is the reason I don't recommend this experience to anyone. When you are in a love triangle you have so much to weigh and think before making any decision, so much to think about; future, flaws and qualities, what you feel and those people feel about you and how you will affect them. And what scares the most is that at some point you will have to be selfish because there is no right or wrong decision, but the decision that we think is best for ourselves. And that's the worst because you're going to have to hurt one of the people involved for selfish reasons.

But that people who are in a love triangle are in a very delicate situation and so it's confusing. i've said this before and i'll say it again too i think at this point elena is more in love with damon but literally ALL of her friends are criticizing her and judging her from it and pushing her away from it (even alaric) i know if all the people around me absolutely hated the guy i loved i would have a hard time being with them even if i did love them because i'm just so family oriented (like elena) i also think she still has feelings for stefan and it's not as if they totally gone away which makes the situation harder because she could easily retreat to him and still be happy (just maybe not as happy as she is with damon) stefan is the 'safe' option and a lot of people pick the safe option even if their heart isn't fully in it a lot of people settle for jobs they don't want/aren't passionate about because it's 'safe' and the same goes for relationships so i get it fully also keeping in mind her age it makes total sense she hasn't fully figured what she wants yet unlike stefan and damon who have lived a long life

Tyler was in the cellar with Caroline and then klaus didn’t body jump until he was stabbed that’s why in that moment Tyler started to “transform” cos that’s the moment the body jumping spell started working

Another way to interpret your comment is: "She would've chosen Damon if it wasn't for Damon's behavior and actions since he came to Mystic Falls"... Basically, she would have a easier time "choosing" him if he was a nicer person; in order words: water is wet... The reason why "everyone else at Mystic Falls", those character, are not fans of Damon and are not "rooting" for him when it comes to Elena it's because of Damon's own actions and behavior... The characters that are not 'pro-Damon' didn't manifest a prejudice towards him out of thin air, it isn't some Unfair bias against him, it is a result of the bad shit that Damon has done in general and to them So YES, Elena feels the negative reactions towards Damon from the rest of her loved ones; but the reality is that it is a fair and understandable reaction.

First time watching, I too thought Elena would choose Damon in the season 3 finale. I think with the circumstances she was placed in (thanks, Matt) made her change her mind last minute and chose Stefan. Choosing Damon would have led to facing judgements from Caroline, Bonnie, Jeremy, etc. She would've probably called selfish because it was Damon vs Stefan and everyone else.

I also don't really like Elena but the viewpoints here on her not being able to figure out how she feels are kind of wild. She doesn't mean she'll lose the other one romantically and she wants to keep both romantically, she means the other won't be able to be in her life anymore at all because of how they feel. It could feel like another person dies. And her not wanting to hurt Matt in the flashback isn't being selfish, it's being human. She's been close with Matt since they were babies and she knows that if she doesn't necessarily want the same things he does, it would crush him. Obviously the right thing to do is to tell him anyway, but she's struggling with hurting him. Which is a very human (and teenage) thing to struggle with. Plus she calls her mom for advice, which is not something every teenager is willing to do. She also apologizes to Matt in present day for letting it go on as long as she did. Emotions are not math problems. Having intense feelings for more than one person is possible, and she's been dealing with stuff that would drive anyone insane in terms of loss, grief, stress, guilt, and life-threatening events. Having everyone angrily yelling at you to pick someone almost certainly isn't helping her figure it out. It's definitely not fair to them, but I'd argue everyone treating her like she's doing it intentionally isn't fair to her either. I don't know. I have my own reasons for not liking her character, but this example here feels like a miss to me.

Amidst all this what I find ludicrous is the unnecessary hate Stefan receives just because he chooses to respect Elena's decision. Some ppl don't even try to understand why he did what he did and blatantly overlook his noble intentions. If they actually cared they would know him keeping her choice above his own was the most Stefan thing to do. And you know what's ridiculous, it's the people that slag him time and again for not respecting Damon's choices and forcing him blood and making him complete his transition(which I believe is fair but simultaneously debatable) are the same people who give him flak for respecting Elena's decision to save Matt over her🤡 THE IRONY IN THIS IS ASTRONOMICAL! It’s actually very realistic that she choose Stefan. While she met Damon first, she fell in love with Stefan first. Most young girls don’t just get over their first love so easily. So I’m actually glad that they had her choose Stefan. I blame Matt 100% for her death and don’t really get why he even needed to be involved. And I’m not sure why Stefan couldn’t just save them both

She didn't know she met Damon first. She met and fell for Stefan first. From what she knew. So he became her safe space. But let's also remember her choice was not who would she want to spend the rest of her life with but who she wants to say goodbye to. Caroline, Stefan and Tyler were one side and damon there other. And Stefan was the one who help get her.out of a really bad place emotionally
