Was there during this show. They came in from BIAP and to our hooch at War-Eagle to support 2/5 & 1/12 CAV. The band was awesome - got pics and had lunch with them. They put on a great show and were really down to earth. Byron (from Pennywise) was there. I can’t recall why vandals drummer couldn’t make the trip. I had heard of them before but not listened to any of their stuff. I became a fan that day. Thank you Vandals - you guys made that sewer bearable for at least one day.

Read that most bands refuse to go to Iraq bc they're scared and it's a no-pay to little-pay gig. Also, all entertainers ( no matter how famous) must sleep in barracks on base, when they go to Iraq. I now have tons of respect for Vandals

Its better to say "I DISAGREE with our commander in chief while I still RESPECT the troops." There's an album by Fat Wreck Chords called Rock Against Bush, not rock against the troops. The reason why the Vandals were there was to de-stress the troops because war is stressful for them. Most of the troops signed up to protect your right to say WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT, even if its offensive, like the Westboro Baptist Church. The troops and I have defended their right to express themselves.

They overthrow the Government, and there is a power struggle while leaders from the middle east try to take it by proxy. The military would be the only thing, as per their oath to defending the constitution. The only piece of paper that guarantees those rights in this country.. So they very much are defending your right to free speech. Not everything is black and white, and some forms of defense are formed over a hundred years. They don't just stop defending it because there isn't an imminent threat.

The Vandals consider themselves apolitical but Joe Escalante is a far right conservative AND their manager. That is also the drummer from Pennywise playing and not Josh Freeze. Actually, they also played a benefit concert for the Cypress College Young Republicans back in 1984, along with the Circle Jerks, The Dickies, D.I., and Plain Wrap. Some punk used to be for the working class and/or their frustrated offspring; rather than entitled young leftists rebelling against their wealthy parents.
