It is NOT the athletes fault but that of the Parisian organizing group. From what I've heard reported, the group has made such a whole hash of managing that large groups of athletes have complained about their poor quarters, the poor food, etc. and have moved into local hotels and are eating away from the Olympic areas.

That inevitably means some aspects (read: shortcomings) of bureaucracy, not because it's just like every other org - it's most definitely not and is also much more than that - but because we're all human. Without getting in to opinions of Pope Francis or a theological argument about free will, far more important is the matter of your second point. It seems IMHO considerably more Christ-like to be - as you put it so well - deliberate and considered, not least when it comes to publicly stating from such a position an evaluation of a moral issue that'll carry some weight for millions of people, and I say "moral" in the strongest sense: how good, right, and holy (in not just Catholic but I believe broadly Christian terms) something fundamentally is. Put simply, while I agree he could with all due respect have spoken more firmly against it, I'd be far more concerned if his response had been impulsive and reactionary, nonexistent or (worse of all) contrary to Christ and His way. At any rate - Catholic or no, Christian or no, and human free will being as it may - for those who truly believe and follow Him, it's still the case that it's the Lord God who ultimately permitted it to happen. Those responsible will be judged accordingly, and for my part, that's good enough for me to know.
