I think the importance of the Velvets is that they were making sounds like no other band at the time & writing about topics (like heroin) that no other band would have dared in 1966 this song, to those of us who are fans, is a dreamy, trippy beautiful song. It IS a lullaby! Its punk before punk existed. its psychedelic & hypnotic & crawls inside your head and lodges there, as all great rock and roll should...

When the reverb kicks in, i imagine a patient in a hospital walking down an endless hallway. She's the only one in the hospital, but everything is lit and still looks new. The "camera" or view is just of her knees down where her hospital gown twirls around her feet when she walks and spins around, prancing to this song in slow-motion. She's completely alone. And she couldn't be happier.

I have so empathised with the sentiments of this song. Few could not, I'm sure. So many times I have walked through London streets when the clubs have closed or are emptying; with friends, acquaintances, extra special companions, and, of course, alone! Ripped, loaded, whatever, it is a strange period of the day, as the dawn approaches. Sometimes strangers will invite you to join them, in their homes, as you're passing. Have to be selective though wherever you may be. Maybe Lou's most insightful song.

I heard Lou Reed had passed away on Catholic Radio. They played "Jesus", a song I had never heard before. It was a sincere unvarnished plea for grace. The lesson I learned is: don't write anyone off.
