The reply to the (ret) general: "I went into the service (in wartime) at 12 years old and became a cook's helper" means nothing to today's readers. This is WSM at his most adroit. The highly illegal recruiting of 12 year old boys for WW1 was a postwar scandal. Those newly recruited rural children familiar with how horses needed to be kept fit for work did not spend much of their time helping army cooks until very embarrassing questions started to circulate later.
