Mooiste uitvoering die ik ken van dit prachtige kwartet! Sublieme tijdloze muziek!

I hate Ravel for only having written only one string quartet. This is one of the 5 greatest string quartets EVER written. This one by him, Bartok’s 4th and 5th, Ligeti’s 1st, and Ben Johnson’s microtonal masterpiece. Shostakovich’s 8th is a contender too. The string quartet format is SO perfectly suited to him. I’m just amazed that he didn’t tap into it on the regular.....I guess it was because he was caught up in the times. He was a composer writing in the age of the ponderous bloated bourgeois overkill of Wagnerian operas, and Mahler’s epic (and in my opinion) overrated orchestral works. Neither Wagner nor Mahler had the delicate sensibilities needed to write something as intimate and profound as this piece. IMHO, the proof of the greatness of a composer is in their piano and string quartet works. The symphonies and orchestral works of Haydn, Beethoven and Bartok pale in comparison to their piano and quartet works. Symphonies are simply ‘bigger’ objects that necessarily have to forfeit the expository freedoms that smaller chamber ensembles practically insist on

Illuminating and lovely comment, Ash. Thank you. I'll have to look for a YT of the top others (beside the Bartoks) - the Johnson and Ligeti. And Shostakovich's 8th.

An even more refined and exquisite work is Ravel’s Sonate for violin and cello. Displays his virtuosity as a composer.

To my mind the first movement is the fanciest and most vivid encapsulation of the nursery rhyme 'Row, row, row the boat gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily; life is but a dream' wandering off into that slightly disturbing kind of dream that you get when you nod-off unintentionally in the afternoon sun and wake up feeling a bit out-of-focus with a slight headache. I have always loved this!

I have listened to this so many times over the years, and this is the first time I have ever heard of it being a nod to this nursery rhyme. It's perfect. Thank you for lifting this piece to a new height for me!

@@XXdeathless I got into it first by hearing the Medici String Quartet doing it live at my then workplace. A quartet can sound very full eh? and it is easy to follow what each instrument is doing both by ear and by sight. I think it was the First Violinist who said ir was something to do with a river journey and it was from that that I connected with the nursery the similarity.

@@stephensmith799 I love quartets and other small groups for that reason. I can really dig into the counterpoint and emotion. This is the epitome of more with less

I generally agree that quartets are better music than the symphonies, with one exception - Mahler. His symphonies are wonderful, much better than anything Wagner wrote.

Mahler never approached the profundity of Wagner, sorry. There is pre-Wagner and post-Wagner.

Seems like Mr. Hagerty missed the dress code. Is this a festival performance or a separate concert?
