I feel so lucky to have met Stan. A wonderful man, a real gentleman, with many wise and pertinent words - 'I don't think you appreciate your liberty until it has been removed from you'

It must have been hugely depressing. Thank God for the Yanks and the others, including the Russians. Look at the damage they did in defeat. If they had won they would have eventually burned out but the deaths and destruction, world wide would have been unbelievable.

My mother was a British war bride and moved to New York City after the war. Met my American father in London. I am so grateful for your testimony. You and the others are a blessing because I failed to ask questions and not a lot was offered. It is not easy to speak of painful times. Thank you.

Both my Grandparents experiences of war was so different. My English/Scottish Grandparents, one worked in a munitions factory and the other was a Engineer in England during the war. Both my Ukrainian Grandparents never talked about their teenage years during occupation, time in DP camps etc. They came to the UK in 1947.

I cried together with Stan at the very end of this interview. Like Stan I remember what it felt like under German occupation, especially during what we call the Hunger Winter of 1944-1945. And the joy of liberation in May 1945 in Amsterdam.

I had relatives in Jersey and while young I can still remember hearing my Mother telling us about the situation they were experiencing. It was very sad and took a while to improve.

Just came across this vid, my dad loved Jersey, he was a boxer and fought over there several times, he was a boxer, when war started he had to come home, even though he was deaf, and the only thing he could do was watch the sky for German planes, Several years later he went back with my Brother, I think it had changed so much for him, but he was also, really happy to revisit . I feel so happy he was eventually able to go back there, I truly believe, that but for the war he would, have settled down there, and I may have had a different mum.

THANK YOU SIR for sharing your memories and TY also to those who brought those memories to us all. This is what concerns me….too many don’t appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in the free world, in particular I speak of my fellow Americans. ‘I exhort you to appreciate your freedoms’ this gentleman says. I concur. His tears at the end say EVERYTHING. Do not misuse your freedoms, or let those who would abuse them take power. Look to your elections and pay attention to what the people you elect are doing in those positions. We are each guardians of freedom and it is our right and responsibility to pay attention. Don’t just listen to the talking heads of media, do your due diligence research and be informed.

Thank you, @janicebrowningaquin?..for your wonderful comment. I plan to keep it but don’t know how to do it electronically so will have to write it on PAPER. Old enough to know how! I was 2 1/2 years old when WWII began so can only remember the lights going out.

Continued…. Pressed wrong key! Can remember the shelters in the streets in Liverpool, air raid wardens, barrage balloons overhead, Italian POWs in the army field missing their "bambinos" and showing us children by the railings, the photos they kept next to their hearts. We prayed each day for Daddy in the Navy, protecting us. So much more. I keep meaning to write it all down. After seeing this series and how important it is, maybe I’ll get down to it. I actually own a pen or two and even have a very nice journal my daughter gave me for such a purpose!✒️📒📝

Unfortunately, too many today have no interest in learning either from our senior citizens or about our history. Such stories are treasures and should be preserved.

Only one first hand, touching story of the sadness that engulfed the world during the war. The end of this account is a tear jerking account of just having the lights of Jersey shine through the night, as a beacon of the peace that was to come. War is such a horror, you’d think we would never have another one. Will we ever learn?

The lights were shining in the darkness…………..we were at peace…………..how profound those words………Arise, shine; for thy light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth and gross darkness the people: but the LORD a shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee.

Just the verses I was reminded of as I heard this account of the crushing effect of an evil autocratic regime removing all freedom. Virtually imprisoning the whole population & starving them to boot!!
