Flying the Viggen in real life was a fun but rather scary experience. Often in foul weather conditions, ingressing at very low altitude, basically just a hundred feet above the water surface in complete radar and radio silence, flying on very precise timing on the preset waypoints. We popped up once or twice to get a very quick radar fix on the target, and then swooped down again. By the time we were in weapons range, we knew that missiles were already being launched at us, so we fired all our ordnance in just one go, turned 120 degrees, hugging the waves, and hit full afterburner, hugging the waves, speeding out like roaring banshees. No loitering or looking back, just a full speed egress. From there on, it was just a blind hope that we managed to notch the missiles as we would not see them approaching anyway. It was all almost unfathomably violent and dangerous and many young pilots lost their life during these exercises.

The viggen’s anti-ship missiles are so satisfying to use.

lmao at the AWACS call “233 for… 1” after wingman is toasted and you’re already dogfighting. Never change, Overlord / Magic.

did you just evade those SAMs without any chaff pod?

Yes I did. I applied some Tricker's Sax Body Oil to the wings.

Huh, convenient how you left out the part where you "hand-delivered" bombs on a friendly airfield after that MiG-21 fight!

can this plane fly above 30,000 ft? I always see people flying barely above ground. WHY?
@pyrebird75672 жыл бұрын
Probably because that!s also what it was constructed to do. The Swedish Air Force was a little bit nuts during the cold war, and the saying/joke was that if you don’t have pine needles and squirrels in your intake you’re not flying low enough. There’s an article written by a British pilot who got to go on a ride-a-long in a Viggen, and he said that the Swedish pilots were quite comfortable with 10ft/30ft (3m/9m) of clearance at almost Mach 1.

I think the recommendation was to not go below 10m from ground during training. Later raised to 20m after a pilot dragged a telephone wire back to the landing strip.
