I read "Eaters of the Dead" in junior high, and it confused the hell out of me. It really seemed like a historical document, but parts of it were clearly fantastical. (I'm surprised my English teacher didn't catch the connection to "Beowulf"; I certainly didn't!)

Clearly this tale inspired 13th Warrior/Eaters of the Dead, especially the scene with the passing of the water basin. Hard to imagine this isn't embelished or else how could they have survived all the disease that it would promote?

If you read the appendix, Crichton actually says, yes. His attempt was to reverse engineer a slightly realistic version of the events of Beowulf & considered this to have been the real life inspiration for it.

Many did not survive. Segregated from everyone else, with bread and water. And if your immune system was strong enough to survive, and you had the energy and wherewithal to drag your ass back to the community, then you earned the right to continue to survive. If one was low-class or a slave and died, they'd be left where they fell indefinitely for the dogs to clear up. Living in close quarters on a ship. Fresh drinking water was more valuable than gold & jewels. Would actually keep your immune system strong. Now, truly 'foul water'(not your buddy's boogers and spit)would kill your ass. Even getting severe diarrhea.🔥

Passing germs and bacteria toward eachother friends is actually another way to strengthen your own immune system, actually. Well, also annihilating your friends lives if they can not make it of course. Besides, during early middle ages, the vikings were still a very much a tribal society. And at that time, many tribal society around the world had always very unusual and questionable practice that were very repulsive and disgusting in the eyes of high cosmopolitan society. For example, long time ago, one particular tribe in the very remote hinterland of Sumatra Island used to have a Cannibalism judgement for criminals of murderer and adulterous. That's right, Peoples who commited such things would be slaughtered as a food for the community. On the other hand, there were another practice of mass suicide somewhere in Southeast Asia commited by the Wives and Concubines to accompany the death chief. Meanwhile, the Austronesian society around Indo-Pacific Sea are notorious for their very-VERY active head other human for their HEAD. And other plethora of cold, chilling of unusual practice around the globe. So it's very much not out of question if some Vikings did had some disturbing and brutal practices. In fact, what Ibn Fadlan said on the Viking hygienes and human sacrifices are very much less metal compared to what i said above.
@HampaHimpi
@HampaHimpi 8 ай бұрын
There are many tribal society that really had very questionable practices. For example, Austronesian societies of the Indo-Pacific realms who were even more widespread seaferer compared to the Vikings, were very notorious for their very active head hunting activity that very well recorded even in the 20th century. One of their descendats who lived in the very remote hinterland of Sumatra Island, practice Cannibalism to those who convicted as a Murderer and Adultereous alike. And many-MANY more wacky practices and rituals that Tribal animists and polytheist around the globe used to did before the industrial revolution. And Vikings were.....a very much tribal society themselves. It's bound to have one or two of those. In fact Ibn Fadlan description of their Hygiene and human sacrifice were less metal compared to what i descibe above.

They hate the story. Whereas, fifty-years ago, when Kiev was part of the USSR, Moscow's brightest minds concluded that Kiev was founded by a fusion of Viking & Slavic cultures in the tenth-century. All of this was based upon burial goods showing Viking runes. As best one can conclude, the Vikings were boating up and down the Dniper -- hitting the rapids -- notably at Kiev -- and hooking up with local talent to pull their boats around said rapids. This kind of task did result in the most classic Slavic 'pulling tunes' [ Song of the Volga (Dniper) Boatmen* ] -- proudly uttered to this day. The Slavs were NOT known to be traders out into the Black Sea -- and far beyond -- whereas the Nordic boys absolutely are known to have done so -- and the Dniper was the only route they could've taken. * The Volga has no rapids, so there's no reason for much pulling, unless one proposes that the boys pulled up river for a 1,000 km. The Volga is as slow as the Mississippi, so mere sails would suffice. In contrast, the Dniper had famous rapids -- hence it current dams -- which have made them all go away. ( Locks, are apart of every dam. ) The legendary folk tune obviously came from Ukraine. After the practice was established there, no doubt it was widely cloned. So, modern rejectionists not only have to close their eyes, their minds, they have to plug their ears.

@@antiantifa886 not really, yes they were reaching there, but you lack some details here. 844- Vikings besiege Seville, took the city but not the citadel. Following the fall of Seville, Andalusian army marching toward the city and then the rest happened like my first comment. But here more details, 30 out of 80 Vikings ship were burned by an essentially a copy of greek fire. Most of the vikings were slayed in the battle, many captured vikings were executed in front of their friends, and the rest were surrendered to live as a cheesemaker. The Emir of Cordoba then ordered new measure to deter further viking raid by building naval arsenal in Seville. And they were succesfull on repelling another vikings raid in 859 and 966, and even capturing Balaeric Island in 902. 913- the Rus Vikings raid and hold coastal town of Caspian sea around Azerbaijan and Iran for only few months, 8 months for the most. Anter that the Women folks of the town in coastal Iran conspired to poisoned them when they were doing partying. When the realization hit the Rus, the survivors then left Iran immediately with all the booty up to Volga rivers. When they entered the Khazar territories thought, they were Ambushed and killed off by the Khazar armies while all their booty (including Iran slave women) were confiscated. The handful Rus survivors scattered across the steppe, but then the scattered vikings were finished off by the Burtas, then by the Bulghars.

You miss some details here. 844. Vikings forces besiege Seville, took the city except the Citadel of the. Following the fall of Seville, Andalusian army marching toward Seville. Two forces clashed, Vikings were defeated and most of their ship was burn by Greek Fire. 30 out of 80 viking ship were destroyed, most of the viking raiders involved, were slayed. The rest were captured/surrendered. Remaining viking retreated and pursued by Andalusian fleet. they raid briefly in coastal Algarve (Al-Gharb) before sailing northward. Andalusian Emir Abd Ar-Rahman II ordered new measure to deter further viking raid by building naval arsenal (Dar Al-Sina'a) in Seville to strengthen his navy. This measure proved effective to counter Viking raids in 859 and 966 and capture Balearic Island in 902. 913. The Viking Rus' attacked in the Gorgan region around Abaskun, as well as Tabaristan, pillaging the countrysides as they went. But then they only stayed on the coastal cities in Iran for few months, 8 months for themost. An attempt to repel them as they lay in anchor near islands in the southwestern part of the Caspian Sea proved unsuccessful. Then the womanfolks conspired to poisoned them when these Rus were partying. When the realization hit them, these Rus run north along the Volga Delta. After that, the Rus were attacked by the Khazars armies, and all their booty were confiscated. The surviors were scattered but then they too finished off by the Burtas and Volga Bulgars.

The Andalusian civilization was the greatest civilization in history. One scholar says: If millions of books had not been burned in Andalusia, we would now be in the year 2050. Only 300 books remain from the libraries of Andalusia, which are the basis of all science and modern human development. By the way, the inhabitants of Andalusia, whose name was changed to Spain, they were not Arabs, they were only Muslims, and they are the original inhabitants of the country, and Spain is now falsifying its history, and most of the people of Andalusia have forgotten their truth, their history, and their civilizations. Even the names of the cities currently in Spain, such as Granada, are not Arabic names. When the Muslims entered Andalusia, they did not change anything, or erase the identity of the people, but they loved the Arabic language and were convinced of Islam, so erasing the identity of the Andalusian people is one of the most heinous crimes against peoples. I advise you to follow the Spanish researcher Adiba Romero and other historical researchers who are trying to show their true history. I hope that the owner of the channel will talk more about Andalusia, and about the copper books written by two of Jesus’ disciples. When the French entered Andalusia, they discovered the bones of these two of Jesus’ companions. The church hid those books and executed everyone who translated them because they included that the religion that Jesus brought was a religion of peace. And that Jesus is the Messenger of God and the servant of God.

It's a bit depressing when you consider the controversy between those who say "we find all these grooming kits & have records from Christians saying they were so well groomed, they kept stealing all the girls when invited, so our people started stealing their hair styles," & those who follow the claim of this document that they were very dirty, because, generally speaking, if that part with the basin is true, those two statements don't contradict one another whatsoever, unless I am missing something. We also have statues from Germanic claimed kingdoms in the Mediterrainian towards the end of the Roman empire which have a similar cloak to what is mentioned here over top of their togas, too.

Unfortunately, while he probably had several misunderstandings, a lot seems like it can be gleaned from this. Mentions of the cloak match the style worn in statues of Visigoth Kings, who were originally Germanic & had a nearly identical religion to the Norse. The claims from England of them being exceptionally well groomed & this claim of them all sharing a small basin of water to clean themselves each morning are not necessarily contradictory. Besides, a Christian Monk is probably more likely interacting with Anglo-Saxon nobility, so maybe they were marked by taking a bit better care of themselves, or it's a culture transition thing between Nords & Germans. Like, we know Anglo-Saxon kings wiped their asses with scraps of linen. The slave girl was preforming some ritual vaguely akin to Hedge Maid lore- they believed in between places could be used as doorways to see into the spirit world, so they built an arch there, just for that purpose. We do have other claims of human sacrifice from completely unrelated sources across a wide area, as well as a Roman source of sacrificial bulls at sacred groves, which is brought up here, & a Netherlandic claim of a sacred spring where gifts were tossed. Claim of being under constant threat by Jews makes no sense, unless these people were derrogatorily calling Christians Jews.
