I'm American and I love this song because it reminds me of the town I grew up in (Cohasset, MA), which is full of antique shops, Tudor houses, and of course centered around the town green. Which makes sense, because where I'm from most towns and cities spent their first 150 years of existence as English towns and cities. =)

Many, many thanks to John Smith (presumably an alias) for some of the funniest, most unbalanced joyless racist waffle I have ever encountered. The man is an absolute genius to find something offensive in a song that is a bit of light-hearted fun. Thank you so much for brightening up my day, although I strongly suspect that your own world is somewhat dark, being that far up your own jet-pipe. You are, Sir, a comic genius in the old English ethos. Congratulations, and long may you write such great comedy. Britain is proud of you.

What a great video for a lovely song, beautifully sung. I only caught a few episodes of Jam and Jerusalem - but it was SO like the tiny Devon village where my mum was born and raised that it was almost uncanny (right down to the characters and situations - the number of times I've spoken to ladies exactly like Dawn French's character...!). But the song stands alone in it's greatness. Kate Rusby is a REALLY gifted lady. A friend of mine has seen her live 3 times and she never disappoints.

I always see this song as a satire/anti-satire. To begin with, we are exhorted to denigrate and "laugh at" the voice, with the sad, and quite frankly pathetic goals of protecting such quaint and seemingly pointless standards as custard pies and comic book characters. Then, as the narrative unfolds, we see their desperation in the fact of the larger picture, tiny voices making all-too-polite disagreement with faceless skyscrapers and crushing modernity. Too late do we realise that we ought not have been laughing at those who seek to preserve the little things but joining our slim voices with theirs, because the big things are always very eager to swallow us up thoughtlessly.
@andrewkeegan18762 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it's because the song is not satirical. Ray Davies said "'The Village Green Preservation Society' is supposed to be about things I want to preserve" and "all the things in the song are things I'd like to see preserved." He also described it as "an affectionate acknowledgement of our culture."

Strange how people commenting, see this as racist? .... duh! Common people fought for the common land, that was theirs long before the landed gentry saw it as "theirs". The village green is but a small piece of the previous common land. A land that shrunk so much that they could no longer feed their livestock on it. Since the 1950's, lots of people wanted to move to England. I wonder why? Then when they get there, they want to change it. Thanks for Ms. Rusby covering a nice song from the Kinks and Mr. Davies.

Who on Earth could be offended by this? It is a celebration of all that is good, simple, and peaceful about life in a certain Green and Pleasant Land. It is not meant to exclude the non-English, on the contrary it invites the listener to remember similar aspects of their own homeland. Incidentally it most often makes me think of a place 3000 miles across the sea from England, the village green of Cohasset, Massachusetts in America.

Jacob Hoss It's over-sensitive people like this who cause problems. They want us to welcome everyone and everything, but have no time for the indigenous customs and traits we have had for over 1000 years. And I am afraid that although we have been considered a welcoming and sensitive country in the past, patience is wearing thin. Even with the Scots now.It's so sad and it need not have been so, had we had a sensible policy.
@Time2Splitt9 жыл бұрын
Peter Day "welcome everything" & "but have no time for indigenous culture" That's an interesting point I've thought about, but is this reasoning actually true though? Do we, really, have no time for our culture because of... the immigrants? I see it as: because a huge part of our kingdoms' cultures - the arts & humanities, heritage, galleries, museums, requires a middle class education to understand & thus => 'enjoy'. Theatre, literature, music, painting, sculpture, heritage, architecture, museums. A huge part of our our kingdoms' culture. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_the_United_Kingdom "Enriching Britain", suggests just 8% of the population engage in these aspects of culture. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31759010 www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31993163 - kevin spacey on making the arts for everyone www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31797408 - more info on the "Enriching Britain" article I may not be entirely right, but I think that's a more significant reason, that it requires a good education to enjoy. NB: I think it's important to reflect & question our own opinions ("no time for indigenous culture" because of...), otherwise our brains create (potentially misrepresnted/false) explanations based on (the understandably) limited knowledge it has as our brains love seeing patterns (rhythms in music, symmetry in aesthetics) & making connections that sounds right even if it may not be.
