First - I love your chat about long titles and I agree. I think publishers are trying to be unique and almost provide a synopsis within the title. I find that trend very interesting but also not my favorite. I find it very interesting how Danni’s experience was similar to mine that I was not enjoying the beginning. However I ran out of time on my library loan and decided this would be a DNF before I hit the tone shift. I guess I will need to decide before next week if I want to try again or just listen for fun. 🤔 Very interesting discussion!

Long titles for the sake of uniqueness may be the death of us all! Choosing to DNF this month's read is completely understandable, especially if you feel so early that it isn't working for you. If you decide to give the book a second chance, we will be here to chat, but also never force it!

I had the exact same experience as Danni. I was ready to DNF this book by the 20% since it was feeling like a 2 star, but I was determined to stick it thought the first section so I could listen to this episode and comment. And then the seminar scene happened and I was hooked. 🙊 My current rating is probably a 3.75 because I hated that first section of the book so much. Favorite character so far is Father Barry because I giggle everytime he's on page. He adds such a fun counterbalance to this absurd situation they're in. Question so far, I'm so curious about how this entity actually influences people outside of this town. It's giving me such WandaVision vibes and I'm here for it. 😊

Yeah, agree. I struggled with the first part and pushed through. (I will say the last half picks up and goes faster).

WandaVision vibes!! Another good comparison! Indeed, this book had a rough start for quite a few of us...

I'm enjoying this book so far! I'm listening to the audio because it was available first. I love Lord Thomas Cromwell! 😺

Twins! We listened to the audiobook too! Ugh, is anyone surprised that the cat character is a fan favorite!! 😂

I was also really sad when Allen died! I was honestly thinking right before that scene how he was going to be one of my favorite characters. Their interactions and his humor is similar to my boyfriend and I. Like how he was joking with her when she said that she was embarrassed about being hung over. And he told her to get out of the car, that he could not be seen with her. That's the kind of humor. My boyfriend has so I was like awe! And then he died. Sigh. Haha

My rating was 3 at this point. I didn’t finish with a 3 but I’ll wait to say my final lol. Lord Cromwell was my fav and Father Barry. I loved the scene when he said he didn’t take that class about exorcism lol.

Ahh, Jennifer seeing your most recent comment on the latest episode...it seems that we aligned with you quite a bit on this novel! The exorcism conversation was great!

Finally caught up with my reading! First to the three questions: 1. At the moment I think I am at a 3 / 3.5 2. Father Barry 3. What is Alice up to?! I also didn't vibe with the voice of the first chapters and didn't really like Sherry's character (not sure how I feel about her now). But am interested where the story will take us now after the last couple chapters, especially now that the village libray demon-hunting society is founded 😀 Also yes, Alice is sus...

"Alice is sus..." INDEED. Thanks for answering the three questions with us! It seems we are all on the same page with this one: an intriguing story, but a main character we aren't sold with...

I finished the book last night - but will be careful about spoilers (I borrowed from the library, and others were waiting so didn't want to drag it out with others waiting). I don't think I'm a cozy genre reader - I just don't enjoy them as much and find them rather boring. But, I did appreciate having an older protagonist! I thought it was fun having references to other crime mystery shows and books. Definitely agree this first part was .....slow. And the little memory/forgetfulness was odd. But Father Barry turns into a favorite character!! I thought it was interesting having the "Lord of Cats" inhabit her cat, but I don't think I liked the Lord Thomas Cromwell "character", I did enjoy him demanding food tho. My first 1/3 rating would be low,....2.5 maybe, only bringing it up to that from that "switch" in the story.

We appreciate you being careful of spoilers in your comment! Yes, so many brilliant books have older protagonists, and it's lovely to see. And it's the general consensus that the opening chapters didn't work for us. The switch is tone/story direction was nice to see...but will it redeem that opening?

I thought the beginning of the book was 'fine', but the writer seemed to be trying to capture the Thursday Murder Club vibe. Once the demon(s) started showing up, I wasn't sure what to think or if I liked it. I think it's a recent development before the end of this section and I'll know my feelings better into section 2.

Hmm "trying to capture the Thursday Murder Club vibe." That makes a lot of sense as both of us (Danni and Leandra) happened to DNF that series.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one so far. I am kind of opposite of y'all. Initially, I was enjoying the cozy mystery vibes, but once the fantasy elements arrived, it felt a bit too goofy for me. Lord Thomas Cromwell was just so much! 😅

Interesting! We love to see an opposite reaction! It also makes sense that the cozy mystery tone will work for some while others' intrigue rises with the introduction of fantastical elements. It's true, the cat is A LOT very quickly 😂

I almost DNFd this before the demon reveal happened because I just wasn’t vibing with it and I felt like the author was trying too hard to make Sherry seem quirky and interesting. But I wanted to push through until the paranormal element was introduced because I knew that was the main plot and I enjoyed the last couple chapters of this section more. I’m still not really sure I’m enjoying it but I’m intrigued to see what happens. Also why are they making Sherry sound like she in her 90s? 😂 She’s only 63 which really isn’t that old.

We should have taken a poll on how many people considered DNFing as early on as many of us did! And *THANK YOU.* Sherry is 63 going on 120 apparently 😂

I DNF'd before the tone shift. At page 70, Alan was the only character I even liked, so I gave up. The tone was not for me. I'm not huge on the mystery genre, so a lot of references probably went over my head. I do have to say, there was a chapter (six, maybe?) that opened with a paragraph that basically said: Sherry spent the day sleuthing, then she took a bath with Anna Karenina because the only way to beat her insomnia is Tolstoy. And I'm just sitting here reading this asking: what even is this book? Is it a mystery? Because that paragraph just glossed right over the sleuthing, so the mystery ended up solved without much on-page sleuthing done, and skipped right to I don't even know what...

You may be the fourth or fifth person to say this, Beth! And if we weren't hosting the book club, we might have been right there with you. And your reaction to that paragraph 😂😂 Cannot agree more! If you want to hear our thoughts as we continue, please feel free, but DNFing is always the right decision when a reader decides to do it!

Add me to the DNF team. This was definitely before the tone shift, but your discussion of the rest of this part doesn’t make it seem interesting enough to me to try again. Too many other books I’m looking forward to jumping into. I actually love the long title trend, except when I’m trying to identify the book in discussion where I usually shorten to a couple of distinct words.

The DNF team is officially one person bigger! And we fully support it, Anne. You said it perfectly: "Too many other books I'm looking forward to jumping into." Feel free to keep listening to our thoughts if you'd like to know what happens next without reading it yourself 😂 Oh, falling into quick shortened title mode is such a relatable thing when talking about books! ❤️
