First time hearing this. I was instantly taken by the tune. It was hauntingly rich in historic memorys, of those whos lives once was. Yet this music bought them back to life. The dance was an expression of oppression in times of hardship, cigerettes, alcohol, and aggression symbolizing an era of despair , yet the dance was sobering , a moment to forget and express, creating the bond of existence. The marriage of the dance and tune are brilliant pieces, both captivating. Like watching movie reels of structures and people long gone in the physical, who walked the pavements of Washington Square and probably still do in spirit.❤

The song was #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 the weekend before the assassination and also the weekend after. The #1 song the week before was "Deep Purple" and the week after "I'm Leaving It Up To You", both songs later covered by Donny and Marie (I wonder if even they realize that).

The movie the video clip is from is actually "The Ogre of Athens" circa 1956. The Dragon is a notorious criminal in the movie and the little guy with glasses is mistakenly identified as him. So he pretends to be him, Walter Mittie style, and winds up running the local underground temporarily. The guy who hit him is one of the gang members who had found out the truth so he killed him at the end.

It appears that there is a "time machine" after all. It's classic songs/tunes such as this one, that transport you back in time, to the time and memories associated with these classic tunes. This one especially, takes you back to a different time, a different Era. Life seemed simpler then, or maybe it's because we were young back then, and there was so many great artists in the music industry, a "golden age" of music if you will, that transports us back to then, a young nation, a young president, a time of boundless optimism. A bygone Era, but oh how this kinda tune takes you back.

Greetings from Esk, Australia. This tune has always been hauntingly beautiful. I was 8 years old when I first heard it in 1963 and I have loved it ever since. It never ceases to amaze me how different songs can stir the soul and I think it is wonderful that we can travel back thorough time and relive those memories in song. My mother was doing the laundry when Australia heard the news via radio that JFK had been assassinated. As a small boy I was startled at her reaction. She was shocked and saddened even though it was an event that occurred on the other side of the world. I have visited the US on a number of occasions and I love her people. May you all and the world find peace.

The Outsider m’a menée ici.

From Cape Cod Light to the Mississip', to San Francisco Bay, They're talkin' 'bout this famous place, down Greenwich Village way. They hootenanny all the time with folks from everywhere, Come Sunday morning, rain or shine, right in Washington Square. An' so I got my banjo out, jes' sittin', catchin' dust, An' painted right across the case: "Greenwich Village or Bust!" My folks were sad to see me go, but I got no meanin' there. So I said, "Goodbye, Kansas, Mo. And hello, Washington Square!" Near Tennessee, I met a guy who played 12-string guitar. He also had a mighty voice, not to mention a car. Each time he hit those bluegrass chords, you sure smelled mountain air, I said, "Don't waste it on the wind. C'mon to Washington Square." In New Orleans, we saw a gal a-walkin' with no shoes, An' from her throat there comes a growl, she sure was singin' the blues. She sang for all humanity, this gal with raven hair. I said, "It's for the world to hear, C'mon to Washington Square." We cannonballed into New York on good old US 1, Till up ahead we saw the arch, a-gleamin' bright in the sun. As far as all the eye could see, ten thousand folks was there, And singin' in sweet harmony right in Washington Square. Say how's about a freedom song, or the ole' "Rock Island Line"! Or how's about the dust-bowl crop, or men who work in a mine? The songs and legends of our land is gold we all can share, So come and join us folks who stand and sing in Washington Square.

I love this ! Trying to find some symbolism to this track for 40 years ! Finally found some ! I remember this being all over the radio 📻 when President Kennedy was shot ! It makes me feel staunchly American ! It was created in Greenwich Village New York City where I am from. I feel like a wildcat driller drilling for oil and hitting a gusher when I listen to this ! Something similar did happen to me too. The video clip is from a Greek movie called "Orge of Athins " made in 1956 and on youtube, the movie 🎦 is in Greek though. The scene here is at the end of the movie where the man slapped is posing as a Greek crime boss but its not that character. This track is not the soundtrack of that Greek movie 🎦 however. Really turns me on !

I remember that there were no sidewalks --- the streets ran to the front building doors, the foul stuff in Greek cigarettes wasn't tobacco, and the national liquor (Ouzo) would make you forget your name. The Greek Drachma exchanged 25:1 with the U.S. Dollar, so with $50 a month you lived like a king.
