5 or 6 years ago there was a 70 hemi cuda at a Mecum auction that had the VIN tag and fender tag removed and was being sold on a bill of sale. Story I heard going around then was it had been sold and proven fake, so Mecum bought it back, removed the fake tags and resold it on a bill of sale. In 2011 I saw a nice V code 71 Superbee sell at Mecum Chicago, and immediately afterwards it got discussed on Moparts, and a guy who ran a Superbee registery posted a picture of a VIN tag for that car he had in his archives that had that had a N instead of V on the tag. The car had been bought at the auction by a guy who was a partner in a classic car dealership in NC who had a dubious reputation, to flip, and he supposedly contacted everyone talking about the car on Moparts boasting of suing anyone who ever said anything bad about any car he was selling and saying “he never lost”. The online conversations on that car ended then. Pretty scary all the fraud I hear about, not sure if it’s possible to be 100% safe buying a vintage car now?

People who win at auctions do because no one else thinks it's worth is what they do. And if attempted Fraud is committed prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. What if the quarters and fenders were swapped out because of rust/body damage? Does this mean the car is no longer what the vin states? Are their numbers stamped in areas that are more likely to stay the years like frame rails ect… Very interesting topic!
@rocketresto5 күн бұрын
Cars have many different spots for body numbers, in the case of this car it was on the core support and the trunk rail. If they have been altered yes it is a problem unless you have a lot of documentation to back up why they are changed. Those numbers need to be saved if for example you are doing quarter panels.

Chrysler didn’t make it with knock-off Chinese parts….50% replaced? Where does the line lie? To be a real Dodge Coronet R/T shouldn’t it have to retain its parts as built?What does the Vin/ protecto plates matter if the engine and body are mostly repo parts??
@rocketresto5 күн бұрын
Don’t think it’s a certain percentage, to me the car needs to have its original vin tag and all the body numbers intact. To save these cars you sometimes have to replace a lot of metal and that’s ok. What’s not ok is just moving the VIN to a clean car and calling it good.

It should be illegal to sell any car anywhere without a VIN tag no excusses like" VIN is in transit".
@kanasf39169 ай бұрын
So how does it gets registered in the state?
@rocketresto9 ай бұрын
It is still a legally registered car in the state of Arizona, just has an “assigned” vin now on the door jamb that does not match the vin that was on the car.
@steves99059 ай бұрын
so AZ State Police has jurisdiction over cars titled in another state? They can immediately assign an AZ VIN to a car that was shipped in to the auction? The BAT auction shows Nebraska plates. Very interesting topic.
@steves99059 ай бұрын
also its surprising that the car went over the block with the AZ VIN and someone STILL paid that kind of money
@rocketresto9 ай бұрын
They have jurisdiction when it is in Arizona. Doesn’t matter what state that it came out of they have jurisdiction over a car that is in the state of Arizona being sold by a dealer (in this case Barrett Jackson). I’m not a lawyer but I believe since Barrett is the dealer and they have the title in their possession then yes they can do this.
@rocketresto9 ай бұрын
In the past they have pulled cars like this, in this case the owner probably gave it to go ahead. Worked out for the seller, not so much for the buyer.
@moparsa2b9 ай бұрын
depends on the state. I bought a car off of ebay was a fake rebody. Ebay could care less and the state of Virginia said they wouldn’t touch it since it came from NY….
@moparsa2b9 ай бұрын
@@rocketresto Barrett Jaskson is not a dealer, they are an Auction company. They sell the car for the owner and get paid for the service. They don’t buy your car then hope to sell it at a profit…

I think it would be a BAD IDEA for you to do a video showing the "hidden vin's". This would just be another way for the scammers to rip off unsuspecting rube.
@rocketresto9 ай бұрын
A lot of people feel the way you do. I tend to side with the more knowledge is power side of things. If this all stays secret then you have to rely on experts who may or not be totally honest with you. To me the more people who know about this kind of thing the better. The scammers will always be able to do that and I don’t think me posting a video about it is going to move the needle much.

So the buyer spent $45k on a clone. Not a big deal, as long as he’s aware of it. I would drive a 69 Satellite dressed up as a Road Runner. To each his own.

Replica cars are ok as long as marketing states it here you find Replica falcon gt ho but it's usually mentioned so buyers know what they are getting rather than trying to sell as genuine

Why doesn't Barrett tell people the vin issue when they bring the car across the stage? Or do they and I missed that part?
@rocketresto9 ай бұрын
They do but use code words to make it not sound like that. They said the car has a “bonded” title going over but people didn’t know what that meant.
@jimkueneman54899 ай бұрын
A VIN issue is not what that means necessarily.. Bonded in Az means the state has no documentation for the true owner of the car. You have to buy insurance and get a bonded title in that case. This is strictly to cover the states butt if the real owner steps up after they give another person documentation (title) as the owner. After 3 years the title will drop back to a normal title and it is no longer bonded. This is common for those of us dragging abandon cars out of the desert to restore.@@rocketresto

Yep, Barrett Jackson can not only sell a.nice car but can also verify it's a fake. Let the buyer and seller beware.

That just means it was stolen along time ago,, probably when it was a couple years old,, can't remember but only certain states put it back on the door frame ,,for that reason

Well thank you for the great information there Tom that was nice to understand what really goes on with big money the deceit will go on and they will get caught at it eventually although so sad for the person that gets beat up on the other end from what I have been told that that Barrett Jackson is basically a alcohol drug auction probably a whole slew of hookers too I am not of that breed but I am a gearhead at the basics of me.. Love the old muscle cars mopars preferably but all are very nice love the nostalgia grew up in the 60s and 70s seeing these running around you could tell this engine by the noise it made those were the days I'm glad I got what I got looking at all the stuff that gets sold to restore years back wouldn't even touched it nowadays they spend millions on them

Doesn’t make sense, a stolen clone? The only reason I can see is a stolen car or it had a different dash frame put in it from a different B body car other then a coronet? Seems it would be worth more even as a clown car with the vin# left in it.

Wasted a lot of good parts to make a clone. Buyer still paid more than what it was worth.

Well, these cars are bought by people who know nothing about them, rich kids and investors, so it's normal that you will find a fake one from time to time. Working class people were pushed out of the hobby years ago. So I won't cry because some rich kid got screwed buying a fake. But I might point and laugh, though.
