This era of Vines is really good, they've still got great tunes, they're playing good gigs, a bit erratic and chaotic but also more controlled than Highly Evolved. Craig arguably hit his coolness peak around this time and they hadn't become slightly obscure yet!

He inspired a lot of my earlier grungedelia and my view of rock & roll and more, made me feel confident as an awkward teen who never genuinely felt cool. I didn't idolize people in the public so it had limits, but I really gave myself a lot of permission to be different and feel okay about it. Later at an age that's embarrassing to mention (32) in conjunction, but I went through the whole development stages that mattered and didn't get confirmation I had ASD until like 28yo, and I didn't actually accept it until earlier last year, at 32. The Vines are so amazing that it still frustrates me to this day to know I will probably never even have the chance to overpay to see them perform live and it will always bother me that they fell of American radio, though they were never much played there anyways.

I completely agree. BUT they're like No Doubt. No Doubt doesn't really play well live BUT they create an energy that is awesome thus making the music amazing even without the technicality of being an amazing musician. Like Rush and Iron Maiden are amazing musicians and more recent as you said Muse (even Dom, their drummer holds his own being a lefty drummer!) But nonetheless I love the Vines and the music they make.
