You should have asked the 70 how many have read, understood and could explain the theology and philosophy of Aurobindo. Could you? The place was named after the great soul. It became the mother's toy. She did not even bother to visit the place. The initial entusiam came from the lost generatoon of counterculturalists who settled in India for a cheaper way to live. Then it attracted others including the homeless in Europe, homosexuals, paedophiles and so on including a handful Indian nationals. Most of the Aurobindo disciples wisely stayed at Pondicherry itself. Without the surrounding cheap Tamil labour, foreign money ,the hard work of a few foreigners ,most importantly the city of Pondicherry itself for purchases, fun and a few beers, this place would have bitten the dust a long time ago. Ask the Tamils around and they will tell you stories of Permissiveness. A western decadence. Take a count of how many foreigners have left the Utopia. How many foreign youngsters have left the place to go abroad? And so on. What is Matir Mandir all about? Please remember Aurobindo took his inspiration from the great Indian God vasudeva ( also known as Krishna, the lover of Radha whom Auroville's mother could identify with ). And you say there is no religion?. Read his great work, Savitri. This Auroville is just a place, an entertainment centre for tourists and outsiders. It got nothing to do with the real spirit of Aurobindo. A shame.
