I think the movie shows how the leader of a family has a lot of indirect control over that family.

I feel like in other movies similar to vvitch, they would have been intentionally ambiguous or outright say the witch wasn't real. I'm glad she was even though the story mainly focused on the psychological factors.

I felt like I would have liked it to go that way upon first viewing, but it's clear that Eggers' story isn't the one I had expected. Sometimes I find that bringing expectations can cause the viewer to fail to notice the value in what's actually being done. In the end, I agree with you. I wouldn't change it.

another great breakdown. i liked the film, but the ending is what made me love it. one of the most memorable movies, horror or otherwise, that i've seen in a while. out of curiosity do you like this or the lighthouse more?

Thanks! Personally, I find The Witch more entertaining. It's a very simple story with great atmosphere and integrity - there's nothing there that doesn't belong. The Lighthouse is a more complex story, and more ambitious, but for me it's not quite as satisfying to watch, as it feels more like work. Which did you prefer?

@@ShootMeMovieReviews yeah, it's tough for me. both are amazing movies, but i think i would pick The Lighthouse because i appreciated its more ambitious story that left itself open to a few interpretations. plus the performances were out of this world, although I can see your point about it feeling like work. on the flip side, what you mentioned about The Witch's simpler story and atmosphere are why I loved that one too. I will say that the ending to The Witch was much much stronger for me. I appreciate the immaculate world building done in both, but I'd have to give the slightest of nods to The Lighthouse. It's like picking a favorite child for me haha. I know i cant wait for Eggers' next film, though

I'm a huge fan of the Lighthouse and the incredible work of art that it is. This movie, however, I couldn't follow quite as closely. While I feel this movie is also a work of art, I just found myself confused at certain parts, and I hate to say it, but I was also very bored for the majority of the film. I know, it's the sign of a lowbrow common man to be bored by such high art, but the old world dialogue was nearly unbearable at some points of the film. Yes, The Lighthouse also used "elevated" language, but it was much easier to follow. I understand the integrity of the script to stay true to the language of the time, and I give them credit there. It's just where I draw the line for my own self. It reminded me of being back in school and trying to understand Shakespear, and feeling inadequate that I just didn't "get it".

I wouldn't worry about it. Not everything is for everyone. You shouldn't blame yourself for not connecting with it. Maybe someday you'll find it more approachable. Maybe not. Enjoying it isn't going to make you a better or worse person. I wasn't bored, and in fact I was more engaged by The Witch than by The Lighthouse, which took a couple of viewings to really get through to me. To each his own. Let's hope Eggers' next movie is something we'll both enjoy.
