I thought it was one of the better period horror movies to come out in a while. The witch in the movie was definitely a really evil villain and I liked how someone did their research and portrayed a lot of the lore associated with classic witches

Blood in the bucket meant that the goat had a mastitis infection. It's easy to treat with antibiotics, but back then an untreated infection could lead to the death of the goat. Edit: I used to work on a goat farm, in case anybody was curious. 😂

Throwing Tony Baker in there to voice Black Phillip was perfect, haha. I've been re-watching "The Witch" yearly for Halloween. Coming from Massachusetts & having visited many of these Pilgrim-Colonial Sites on field trips when I was young made this film nostalgic as well as dread-inducing.

I just watched it and wondered the same thing. The more I think about it though, her interaction with black Phillip kinda proves that she converted after everything happened.....but I do think maybe he wanted her all along and influenced the situations and other characters to isolate her because she was of age and fit the bill for the perfect new witch lol. I think his plan all along was to kill off the family one by one and make her feel so alone that it wouldn't take much convincing once he propositioned her. Idk just my take on it 😊

I saw the much-hyped "Hereditary" (2018), and was bored before the "sky clad" witches' dance. This "early Colonial America" tale was far scarier, because there's no safety net nor help. Thank you for slogging through the period-correct dialogue.;)

That is an apple. Apple is used in a lot of horror movies. In The Sleeping Beauty, The Witch gives her an apple In other movies, Apple symbolizes Adam and Eve. Even in Death Note anime, Ryuk loves apples. Who was a Shinigami. I've seen apples in many others but I can't recall now

Great review, as always. I like this movie and love the atmosphere it creates. I have to be that pedantic person, sorry. 1630s was Early Modern English. Old English ended around 1066 and Middle English ended about 1500.
