Accepting foreigners with criminal record is not the same as recruiting ultranationalists and ruthless thugs in local prisons. French legion is neither disguised as PMC, so the overlooking of foreign criminal records and re-education (they are given a very strict reforming treatment) is not even a common point. Ignoring a completely different status, conduct and modus operandi, the long tradition of Legion Extrangére Français has only one common advantage with any PMCs: an alternative to regular national army, which is still used in different ways. Some would call this whataboutism an irrelevant codswallop.

If some of them make a mistake, probably. There are too many to get them all, so Kremlin goes after seemingly random priorities. Also depends which guy you're talking about. The one who showed his face kind of apologised their actions, while not denying them. How does the private army of world's biggest warlord who continues wars they played crucial roles in is irrelevant? It partly explains how we've got to this situation in Russia, Ukraine, Syria and the same people still control a lot of Africa. This history and insider testimonies - although biased - shed light on how Russia operates, that's why so many bots try to discredit and refuse this quite sanitised, tame and nearly neutral doc. Their surviving mercenaries still exist, dispersed between regular Russian army and reformed "ChVK" Wagner who concentrate on influence/extraction operations in Africa and Middle East after the mutiny. They're called Africa Corps now, although most experienced ex-Wagner cadres are long since integrated in regular Russian army. I bet since Kursk and Belgorod are getting occupied, Kremlin regrets dissolution of their most effective shadow force, as other Russian PMCs doesn't come close in size and ruthlessness (there are quite a few small ones sprung up recently).
