The chunkies that came out of the converter almost look like polishing shot used in a wet tumbler. The fact that all the bearings are there it's possible that this junk got trapped in a part and installed without being noticed. That would look pretty bad...but if it couldn't have come out of the transmission, or the converter coming apart....not many options left.

I was in the race car business myself for 30 years and it always amazes me how if something can go wrong it usually does go wrong, the only way to prevent this seeming 'law of motorsport nature' is meticulous preparation and attention to detail to every single part of the car, you take you're eye off the ball for one second and boom that's another DNF/DNS and another expensive item needing repair or replacement. I got used to this and learned to stay calm and just forget the frustration and get on with sorting the problem, it's very easy to lose your temper or even cry with despair when some component, often brand new that should never give any problem just up's and fails for no apparent reason. Well done you guys for your professional attitude in facing adversity, it's your strength and is and always will be the key to your success..

It's rolled up skimmings from the welds on the outside of the turbine blades (that look like rivets) skimming the pump housing. Its common for badly made torque convertors to do this as they can't hold the turbine straight at low speed. This is a badly made torque convertor he needs to see Rossler about that centre bearing assembly as its terribly made compared to the large ones I see for marine use. The cap that just lays on the bearings is usually bolted down on heavy duty ones and that then fits in the pump housing side rather than the 'sandwich it to fit' type way this one has been done. For the record Jet engines create these same shrapnel pellets when they are badly out of balance and the turbine welds skim the outer housing.

Since you changed out your flex plate and converter, I would check the gap between the converter and flex plate to make sure that you have 3/8 of an inch clearance before you bolt the converter to the flex plate. This year it is hard to root for one person. After all bad luck from the moment that 2.0 caught on fire till now, it is hard not to wish Tom to get some W’s that he deserves. Can’t wait to see him doing low 6’s and 5’s and not get broken. On other side Garret is doing good and is an underdog with so much potential and Cleet brand is so funny. Now with all drivetrain upgrades I think the wagon has chance to take most of the W’s this year. I really do understand the knife edge when this amounts of power are reached. Like one micron is separating car that breaks something every run and car that keeps on tracking at 110 percent performance. Steve wins anyhow while all of my favorites use his engine. BTW Steve is so kind. Every time he keeps his cool. At least this time I would be pissed off big time and unreasonable. Sure pumping 5000 HP true the drive train and something can break. But using like 100 HP to roll in traffic breaking stuff that is made to run thousand of horse powers and cost so much, man I mad right now. Plus part that gives up kills other part that is so expensive. Man I am so sorry that this shit is happening to such a nice person. Steve deserves a break and 5’s. Good luck!

You can't keep a good man down. I know Steve will find the root cause and we'll be right there when he does. Thanks for letting us ride along 👍

They almost look like chunks of welds from the turbine blades breaking off/ self clearancing. 17:51 you can see where the turbine was getting beat up, Look at the welds, they be rubbing, and one appear to be mostly missing.

That sure looks like a needle bearing came apart. I just don’t know what bearing that would be because of the diameter of the pieces. They look too big. The bearing could have lost a few needles if it was installed a little off center and it would still seem fine on the bench but even that is my best guess and it seems far fetched.. maybe polishing shot from the factory that got caught in the converter?

When my Roadmaster wagon had to get towed because of a failed aftermarket Opti-Spark, it too, just bareeeeeeeeely fit on the flatbed. Ahh, the memories. 😁👍
