The Walk

The Walk

Күн бұрын

I'm back to do another section of my borderline obsessive mission to complete the former Derbyshire and Staffordshire extension of the Great Northern Railway. Commonly known as the Friar Gate Line.
I take a short walk from the former Derby Racecourse station, through Breadsall station, and on to the site of Morley tunnel.
Plenty of remains to be found on this once great railway.

Another great video. I used to live and work in the Derby area until 5 years ago when we took the plunge and moved to the Scottish Highlands. I'm sure I've seen you in one of our local pubs back in the day, but I won't" blow" your location. You do some brilliant videos. Keep it up . We love them !

Thanks a lot mate. I love Scotland. Islay and Jura were always a dream but not sure my wife would go for it!

Lovely to see the beautiful scenery and it's interesting and educational with the historical comparisons from then and now. Thank you and your wife for this brilliant idea. Looking forward to other videos!

Used to play down there as a kid, we used to call it the train lines funnily enough. I remember as a kid the viaduct being blown up on a sunday morning in the 70s. We lived about two mile away and remember the doors and windows rattling when they detonated it.

Very sad they destroy so much of the great Victorian infrastructure

Yeah the station was marked out in old bricks around 20 years ago by some restoration group...I remember the bridge at the windmill pub alley was dropped over 30 odd years ago.

I really enjoyed this one, just a good wander, Being a Norfolk Boy, I don't know much about where you are walking, but as a railway historian I like to take in the information you are giving...would love to see you commission a TV series as, your commentary is so cool and not stuffy as some people are, keep up the great work...regards, John

Looks like the weather has changed. Too bad they have infilled all of those tunnels. Looking forward to the next walks, sound interesting.

The remains at Breadsall station were 'reconstructed' a few years back using the original buildings footprints and some remaining bricks on site. When first completed they looked quite good but they have been badly vandalised since.

Fantastic video Gareth thanks for the history I never realised Derby had a racecourse till you mentioned it it’s surprising how Big Oakwood is often when roadworks in city TrentBartons buses have often used Oakwood as a diversionary route also you mentioned closures were any of these linked or caused by the Beechjng Axe thanks again for awesome video can’t wait for the upcoming ones hope you all well
