The Walk - EP 78 - What Hides Deep Beneath Matlock? - Jug Holes Lead Mine - Matlock , Derbyshire

In what was meant to be just a simple walk around the vast natural cavern of 'Jug Holes' cave, just outside Matlock in Derbyshire, myself, Phil and Nikita were quickly thrown out of our comfort zone.
Well, I certainly was.
The cavern itself is stunning and a short walk underground unearthed the beginnings of former 16th century lead workings.
But before we left, we thought we would walk down the the former mine entrance, further down the hill, and ended up bumping into a group of lads that had just been inside.
Not wanting to appear 'past it' in the company of younger blokes, me and Phil took them up on their invite of a tour inside.
After an uncomfortable and claustrophobic crawl on my belly, through a makeshift corrugated iron tunnel, we found ourselves deep within the lead mine.
It was totally worth it, for the remains we found.

Hayup Gareth they weren't Cavers that Phil saw, they where hitch hikers from another Galaxy! That jug hole doubled as a porthole, an them trolleys an incline railway where probably part of the shuttle service to ferry all your belongings in case you didn't return to this dimension especially back in the day cause the kitchen sink would be a heavy ceramic butler or Belfast job.. On a less me being daft note, I wonder how many folks over the generations have sought refuge in these type of dugouts?! this one looks like with a bit of a spruce up could be quite nice! Mind you in view of the last few years I've taken to thinking the Neolithic was a kinda golden age.ive grown increasingly attracted to caves! I vaguely recall hearing that the bluejohn mine seam reached out in to someone's backyard? an they where capitaliseing on that for a while, can't really elaborate on that just a rumour. I did like them trolleys I wonder if any makers marks or just colliery blacksmith made. the gauge may be registered in old trade catologues an size an style identify em. I'm enjoying these walks great stuff, cheers

Depending on the trajectory of everything these mine shaft, jug hole cave uploads may become a legitimate alternative to location location location so best sign Frodo up early! Cavern Real Estate from the company that likes to go deeper. Roll up roll up get your Caves here, here we have a nice two up two hundred down. With en- suite swamp, constant running water on yer head (full vacant possession ( that's just for your soul) comes with mineral rights as standard. Etc etc.. As Phil likes living dangerously which I commend, it maybe worth traveling with a good quality length of climbing rope an a head torch an hand strapped pick, to aid getting out of slippery banked water holes. as the welly boiler suit combo may replicate a deep sea diving suit, then you'd know which way them cavers went!
