What great pictures of staveley works and railway stations. I used to work at staveley works in the 70s. And can remember the buildings in your pictures. Thank you. Brilliant.

Always great videos and bountiful information. But it just becomes even more golden with rugby tackling land octopuses and your ever friendly “‘Ello mate”, and then “Nothin’”. Made me laugh so hard because I do the same here in Sydney with mostly the same results. But you got one at the end. Brilliant! Thanks for the heart and the laughs, Gareth. 😆

I used to live near there as a kid. Near the entrance gate was the foundry and the engineering pattern makers shop, on the opposite side of the road was the canteen and the centre spun casting shop.ihad relatives that worked there.

Great informative video but not to sure on who actually built which bits of the railways you have described and walked in this one, You say it was built by E Watkin of G C R fame but I believe some of it may date back to the days of the Lincolnshire & Derbyshire Railway which pre dates the GC a little. The Great Central was an amalgamation of the Manchester Sheffield Rly.&

Oh yes, you're right. I was getting in a muddle with the London extension. Thanks for that. I often forget the lines beyond Annesley were already in place.

@@IckeWalks I believe Annasley and a lot of the other pits where all ready interconnected by routes to the north , east and west, the GC e xtension to London started at Annasley to head South to Nottingham , Leicester and London and beyond ( if Watkin's plan had been completed ) anything north of Annasley was probably improved to allow easier through running of trains to Sheffield and Manchester, but most of the stretch north of Nottingham was plagued with subsidence problems caused by undermining from the various coal pit's . Not sure about the bit to Staverly and Chesterfield but it would have made sense to add that at the if it was not already there at the time. The route also connected to Lincoln and beyond from Tuxford

I've not walked this end of the canal. I used to live in Retford and Gringley on the Hill so spent hours walking along the towpaths. I used to catch the train to Kiveton, where i think the canal ended at that time, and walk back to Worksop. Some lovely walks and busy with boats in the summer.

No thats absolutely insane you start the video off at Willbonds basically my local plumbers merchants. That canal walk into chesterfield I used to walk nearly everyday with my tool bag on my back in my apprentice days when Pete dropped me off at the merchants. Now live in a flat right opposite the stadium. Incredible information learning more and more. Also that song at the beginning is that the one from the beginning of renegade the film always wanted to know what the name was. The film that woke me completely up personally in 2022 from never hearing it. Amazing video

Hayup Gareth loving them diagonal bridges an all the various brick an stonework. A complex dissect that lots going on, I imagine where there's a canal dug out it lends itself to railway not just the lay of the land but a handy semi embankment that's been dug out an plonked near alongside? Just needing levelling out more perhaps, in some cases. I listened to the intro song half a dozen times, Fantastic that! Cheers

It is hella complex that Staveley works site and huge, it got me thinking that as an addition to your conveyances I wonder if there's any programmes that translate old maps to period aerial photography an then have a see through overlay with the train tracks an stations drawn on, useing rivers canals an big buildings as a guide to locate match it all, it may be another element to your chanel that's not much being done? even with the simpler routes it'd work well in conjunction. to show the junctions tracks an stations. rather like them White an blue school projectors with the cellophane overlay deal. Cheers
