Daryl/Beth episodes have the lowest ratings because most people that watch this show are zombie/gore/violence/action fans. But the people that actually enjoy story can appreciate this episode. Exactly! The way a lot of people take this scene is “Daryl’s a badass that can make it through anything” tbh true (to me at least) but he would hate that because there’d be no one with him and he’d be on his own again.

I love this episode. We get to experience Beth a little more, because we haven't seen or heard much from her previously. And, we get to see Daryl deal with some of his past; who he thinks he is, versus how others (Beth) see him. Daryl basically sees himself in the shadow of whoever's in charge - Merle/Rick/Hershel - but in this episode, Beth was vulnerable, and he stepped up to take charge. But, we also get to see his own vulnerability of being left alone. Carol tried to tell him, before, that he's just as good as the others, but I don't think he quite believed her. Excellent editing, Lacey. 😊🌺🏝️❤️

The first time I saw this episode I was binging to catch up to season 6 which is where the series was. Like you, Steve, initially I was like "this episode is too slow etc" and then it hooked me, about the time Daryl started going off on Beth after the never been to prison comment. Then I got it. And that "you're gonna be the last man standing Daryl Dixon" along with everything else Beth said, really got to me and I fell in love with this epsiode. Beth, little sweet Beth, got Daryl. She saw through his bs defense mechanisms to keep people at arm's length and saw that he does that to protect himself. Beth seems to really see Daryl. And still cares for him which he is definitely not used to. I love this episode. I felt it! As always, a wonderful reaction from two of my favorite people . And please tell Miss Ava that she was definitely the star of this whole episode!! ⭐🌟☄

@Feanor Hey :) I avoided the show until they were literally starting season 6! I had no desire to watch it at all. One of my daughters had been watching and loving it and she kept telling me that I just have to see it and still I was like nah, I'll pass. Zombies seemed so ridiculous to me, lol. I'm not even sure why I chose to watch Season 1, Episode 1 that night. I have severe insomnia and have for years and that night, as per my normal, I was wide awake and searching for something to keep mind busy. And in all honesty I had recently stopped drinking my two beers ( kind of large beers, lol) a night to put me to sleep for a bit so I was keeping my mind busy watching mindless tv. Then I watched episode 1. Truly, that was all it took to make me want to see more. With each episode I got more and more attached and was totally hooked and in love well before the season 1 finale, lol. And I have been in love ever since. It is the only show ever for me where I became truly attached to the characters and found myself thinking about them randomly throughout the day. Also it is the first show that had me doing the "what if" game constantly as well lol. I was able to binge 5 seasons and loved every second of it. 😊

This is definitely a road episode, and I know it probably gets a lot of crap. I didn’t care for it much on my first watch. But I just rewatched this with my husband recently and I have a slightly different perspective now. Beth and Daryl are really as opposite as two people can be. Beth grew up with a loving family on a farm, riding horses, probably singing with her church - that kind of thing. Daryl grew up in a highly abusive situation with his asshole brother learning how to hunt, track, and just survive while his parents were in and out of jail. But here they are on an equal plane now, and of all people at the prison, they’re the ones who end up stuck together. I can imagine Daryl and Merle probably loathed people like Beth on principle because she was representative of everything they never had at her age. Drunk Daryl reminds me a lot of Season 1 Daryl. Remember back then, the rest of the Atlanta camp were very wary of him, and it was with good reason - he and Merle were volatile back then, and they probably fed off each other’s volatility. Daryl was able to have a lot of personal growth once he was no longer under Merle’s influence. But as we see here, everything he experienced is still a part of him.

It seems like after the world went to shit, some lesser privileged people took out their frustrations on the higher class golfing club types. A slow episode, but it is nice to spend time with characters sometimes as opposed to being pushed by a narrative. Something about Daryl crying makes me feel like crying too. No other character in this show has that effect on me. This is probably in my top 5 episodes of the entire series so far. And by far my favorite Darryl episode. The whole reason I watch this show is to see how the characters change and adapt to their horrible new world. I want to know what they're feeling and how they're coping with fear and loss and anger but also with friendship, love, and hope. Beth, of all people, has validated Darryls existence in this world. And he has done the same for her, even if they can't see that yet.

I think y’all know this but every episode is for a reason... it may be referred to in the future 😉 Daryl is used to being on his own and now he’s “stuck” with Beth (I think that’s where his anger was coming from in the beginning)... also as he said to Beth, he still thinks he could’ve prevented what had happened. I think when it first aired this episode was not liked because it was such a change of pace and people missed the message. It gives you a lot more insight and development to both characters especially Beth who has been very in the back round before this. they compliment each other, Beth gives Daryl hope and makes him believe he is good whereas Daryl gives Beth strength and is helping her to grow as a person. Interesting how you view that conversation as foreshadowing guess we'll see how that pans out.

Seeing Daryl cry always makes me cry.. the fire made me think of Daryl’s mom... she burned down to nothing. His past is being burned away. Hi Ava!! As you can see in the comments this episode is either loved or hated and not a lot of in-between. I had a feeling Steve's reaction would be pretty much what it was for this episode. He seems to lean more toward liking the action filled episodes than the character driven ones and that's okay because we all want different things from what we watch on tv, but it was nice to see how much he enjoyed the end of the episode which really is a beautiful moment for these two characters. I personally love this episode, it's one of my favorites of S4, and perhaps of the entire series. I love watching Beth draw real emotion and honesty from Daryl, and help him symbolically burn his past away. Also, I love Beth's growth here too. We didn't get much from her other than singing and being a nanny to Judith prior to this, so it's nice to see more of who she is as a person, and for her to realize that she's not "just another dead girl" but someone who is strong in her own way. Beth and Daryl share a special bond and I think they both needed that after the fall of the prison/Hershel's death.

Steve and Lacey, are you familiar with the kind of fire Deryl and Beth had made? (Not the shack, the camp fire!) It's a good thing to know about in the apocalypse, and other desperate times. It's called a Dakota Fire Pit. It is two holes dug near to each other and connected by a tunnel. Usually on a slope. The fire draws air from the other hole and produces a intensely hot but small fire. It's used for concealment and also sometimes to forge.

To know them, understand them a little better. To get those flashes of "what was" in their lives and how they lived...before the world ended. All the episodes can't be high drama and action. Any case, It's really great to see Daryl open up a little. It's rare when he does...but when he does, it's usually a flood of crap he's bottled up for his whole life. Daryl is a really great, stand-up guy. If you do right by him, he will always have your back.

One of the other things I love about this episode is how they find all of that money in the country club and it gives the impression that at least one of those rich people brought all of that cash with them thinking that it was somehow still valuable and worth something. Turns out, the only value it has is how well it can burn in a fire lol. And that's exactly how much money will be worth if the shit hits the fan ( when the shit hits the fan) in the real world!! I don't have to worry about that since I'm always broke 😉but an awful lot of people who spent their whole lives solving problems by throwing money at it are gonna be completely shocked that money will be absolutely nothing anymore. People like Daryl Dixon who came from basically nothing and had basically nothing ( money wise) will be worth more than the richest man in the world because he knows how to survive and thrive using whatever he can find. People like Daryl Dixon are worth that now, it's just that our money loving society has a screwed up way of measuring worth 😊I'm shutting up now lol. Sorry for rambling

Not just the rich either. Anyone who depends on technology is going to be hurting. The homeless will be in charge! ;)

Homeless people would literally be the first to die in these scenarios. Already malnourished potentially mentally ill and almost certainly crawling with drug problems.@@gravitypronepart2201

when I watched this episode for the first time, I was mostly worried about Daryl, Beth and where the rest of the group may be and what was happeneing to them. I'm sure I did think a little about possible foreshadowing...but I remember being very caught up in Daryl and Beth's conversation. I felt this episode was very good and gave us more insight into these 2 characters....and guess ya'll will just have to keep watching to find out if there really was any foreshadowing...my lips are SEALED!!! teehee

Lol! I had moonshine once. I got it in North Carolina in and it was like Ever Clear with a cinnamon stick in it. Me, my Mum and Dad, Aunt and Uncle drank it on Christmas Eve. Don't remember anything after the first shot! Lol!!

@@darthken815 Oddly I have never been hung over, not even when I woke up on Christmas Day with no memory of getting home. Mum and Dad said I had 3 shots total. Don't remember anything after the first shot, lol! Then since everyone had wine with dinner and I hate wine, I had Jamison whiskey.

@April Richards ~Be thankful you've never had one. Me and some friends had doozies the morning after the last night of our senior trip back in june, 2001. We went all out that last night. I remember somebody pouring me something out of a huge green bottle. Next thing I knew, I woke up in a deck chair 2 or 3am then staggered back to the room. Got woken up at 7:30am so we could get ready to disembark. The jackhammer in my head didnt go away for an hour or two. I was better off than one guy. Dude was practically comatose. His dad couldn't wake him. Nothing serious. He woke up couple hours later on the bus ride home. He told me his dad had to take him off the ship in a wheelchair. Saw him a few months later and he said it took 2 days for his hangover to go away.

@@darthken815 Damn! I guess I'm weird because I have other pain conditions but wasn't on meds then. So yeah, no hang overs. Even drinking a bottle of wine in one evening. Now caffeine sends me hyper!

Another sad thing about this is that I bet Merle did this to Daryl when they were younger. Tryna rough him up a bit like he’s doing to Beth😭

Amazing developmental episode for daryl and beth.. this is the episodethat made me feel like Beth is getting stronger now it is good for her to be with daryl after all the prison battle..

This is the only family Daryl ever really had. He goes out on runs, and helps the most. He always acted hard because thats just how he came up. Beth got him to move.

When I first watched it I could almost picture daryl dying and beth witnessing it and that 'you'll be the last man standing/you're gonna miss me so much when I'm gone' playing over it as he died...and then I thought it was probably just a convo. I loved this episode though the song choice was amazing. And supposedly there is a whole story the writer came up with for the people at the country club but idk if it can be found anywhere or not I just remember the director of the episode saying it on the commentary.

This episode had to play out this way. Beth had to look like a brat . Darryl had to look annoyed by it. He had to act like he doesn’t care about her , he had to be cold. So that you can have this speech at the end, where their attitude would be explained by an insightful Beth…

It’s not that Daryl is an angry drunk, it’s that after all his time in the group from being the outcast he finally began feeling as though he didn’t only earn his keep, but he was being thought of as not some hardened criminal-like guy but instead a valued member, therefore when Beth asked about him being in prison (and then tried pushing further even asking about the drunk tank) he felt as though his entire time of growing, and thinking that the group thought of him as something more was incorrect, that’s likely why he brought up that he never relied on anyone for anything, because that wasn’t the case, he tries to portray it that way but he does rely on the group for something: Love. So when he heard her say that he felt as though the love he wanted wasn’t there. But otherwise loved the reaction

The people that didn't like this episode only watch the show for the character deaths and near death experiences. The people that did like this episode liked it for having character development and giving both a lot more depth.

Hi Lacey, Steve & Eva! Good insight on Daryl & Beth. People are so hard on Beth, I like her! She’s pretty & can sing, the only I didn’t like, is a cry. She needs acting listens on crying, otherwise she’s great❣️. Beth hurt Daryl feeling with that jail crack, she assumed he was a criminal. People are so quick to judge! I’m glad they talked it out, letting their emotions speak. That was beautiful 💗 Letting the past burn down! 🔥

I really wish they would’ve developed Beth and Daryl’s relationship more and sooner. Not even a romantic thing, but friendship. You can tell that they bonded and that they truly started to care for each other after Daryl’s breakdown. Daryl is not the type of guy to let someone hug him, let alone hug him from behind, but he accepted it from Beth.

Great episode. I said EXACTLY what you thought initially...this episode sucks!! And then...the AHA moment! I thought this episode and all the episodes so far, in 2nd half of Season 4, are pivotal moments for each character. They are reviewing who they were before and choosing who they are going to be. They are realizing that NONE of them is capable of surviving alone. I didn't see all the foreshadowing. That's VERY interesting. So Carl, Michonne, Tara, Carol, Daryl and Beth have all said goodbye to their pasts, and chosen who they will be. Rick, Glenn, Maggie, Tyrese, Sasha, Bob, and the kiddies Lizzie and Mika, and newbies Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene paths remain to be seen. Great review.
