Carl wasn't the ultimate thing. It was a process. Michonne is who snapped him out of it. Rick told her to go home multiple times so he could return to CRM to save her and their family. She was so hurt by his lack of reaction that she left. His inability to lose her is what started the healing. She took care of the rest.

(computer) was live streaming to the world the whole time.. dr Jenner was transmitting globally too anyone, that may still be listening, but unable to talk back.. even when he was 'sad sack blathering' how he was going to kill himself etc. tapess that would be found later (or kept with said scientist) in any number of old labs etc.. (not just talking about the french tapes) - any lab/military scientist may have footage) a 'small world call back moment' ... like one of hopes dads nameless scientist survivors hidden in the resistance.. "i'm sure i know that name"..- fuddles on an old computer . and sure enough. there's footage of rick, Shane carl and the gang all breaking out. lol "it was super inspiring" lolol..
