We lost a great deal when the late 1960s took over. I remember when it was proper for a man to always walk nearest to the street when with a lady on a sidewalk....or with a young girlfriend for that matter. (Re. protection from swerving cars.) When passing a woman now and if I automatically try to take the street side half of them think I'm being rude and pushy. And holding a door for some women now can make them angry. Sigh.

Surprisingly good B picture, at times reminiscent of "the Maltese Falcon," but with a painting instead of a stuffed bird. Well directed, photographed, and acted, with some really snappy dialogue rivaling some of the best A-list scripts of the period like "The Big Sleep." Chapman is just as beguiling as Joan Bennett and should have been just as big. Thanks for the hi-resolution upload as well.

Bennet was pretty in her youth, and this actress here must have been pretty too, 20 years earlier, but neither one comes close to Margaret Lockwood (The Lady Vanishes,1968, Hitchcock). Margaret Lockwood doesn't even come close to Vivien Leigh (That Hamilton Woman, Waterloo Bridge, Gone With The Wind), Hedy Lamarr (Algiers, The Strange Woman, Dishonored Lady, Samson And Delilah), or Gene Tierney (Laura, Leave Her To Heaven, The Iron Curtain, Son Of Fury, The Razor's Edge). Those 3 were all equally beautiful, the most beautiful women in the world by far, right up until today. I think they and Lockwood were all European.

Why does every channel butcher the shows with a million ads? The level of greed is ridiculous! Ads are at 6 minutes, 14 minutes, 18:35, 26:21, 34:34, 42:55, 50:36, 1:01:41, and 1:12:46. So there was more than 1 set of ads every 10 minutes. A movie of 1 hour 22 minutes, or 82 minutes, with 9 sets of ads = 82÷9 = 9.111. That is over 1 SET of ads every 9 minutes. Many of those sets had 2, 3, or more ads in them.

I paid $120 last April for a KZbin Premium subscription. True KZbin movies come through with no ads, but other outfits that also provide KZbin presentations do sometimes still have ads. For me the $120 is well worth it as I watch a lot of these old movies. Could not handle this if the ads were there. If you go this route be sure to keep the followup email from KZbin that is the link for signing in. If you clear your history the connection will otherwise be lost.

So much of this film is copied from the Maltese Falcon. The private eye's name is "Archer" (Spade's partner). There's a Joel Cairo character, a love interest with multiple names, and even his secretary is played by the same actress who played Spade's secretary. At times it seems like someone wrote the script while watching the Maltese Falcon. Not a classic but not bad. Fairly typical '40s B movie.

Love these NOIRS!! ... PLEASE, PLEASE .. DO .. NOT .. COLOR .. THEM. ... In the late 50s TV producers forced, and thereby ended, the Classic Noir period. ... A period started by Producers moving around the imposed censorship from the 1934 Hays Commission by having photography directors play around with shades, hues, looks, and feel of scenes. ... But, because of backward technology, TV producers compelled Hollywood to stop this practice due to the bleed of black-into-whites (or, visa-versa). .. IF you COLOR them you DICTATE to us - you deny us their magic of having us PARTICIPATE with shading in our feelings and sentiments onto those shades and hues. ... I seldom comment about this offensive habit that is pushed on us in these old movies, but I definitely share your displeasure. For some of us--and I definitely am one of the worst--this habit is absolutely disgusting. I can remember 600 mile road trips in the 1950s with my parents who both smoked even though I had serious asthma. Those were some tough years. Yep, still have issues.

@larrywhited3070 it's always something I notice in all the old noir flicks, the lingo, duds, cars, drinks and smokes,, (that they light, take a drag, then snuff out dramatically or toss )

Mr. Archer has the world's ugliest pair of couches in his living room. Plus his secretary misread the name of Joshua as Joseph when reading the Bible.

That was an intentional lie to try to trip others up who might know more.
