Not true, they were officially recognised as whites, as were the irish and eastern euros. But they were seen as lower than anglos and other germanics and were lower class on average. Officially they were always white.

I watched part of the filming. The part when 3 guys go to school (Ganios, Wahl, one who plays Joey) get out of the car, Joey hits the hood saying "good car, good car" and they walk towards the school. Filmed On Waring Ave along the gate that has the opening to walk towards Astor Ave (the soccer field) Went to Columbus myself.
