Manila. Pearl of the Orient. The Manila area has been rapidly urbanizing and millions have moved here for opportunity. Today Metro Manila is home to maybe 13.5 million people. It's a country born out of the common Filipino experience of being under Spanish rule or under attack by them, followed by revolution, American rule, Japanese invasion, and dictatorship.

Kinda sad that Luzon blades are often overlooked, I observed that as well. Even some prominent collectors (including those in Luzon) tend to be fixated to Visayan and Moro pieces. Even though Moro blades were my first love when I started this hobby, I eventually grew to love Cordilleran, Bicolano, Tagalog and Ilocano blades too. I thought they're underrated, they have their own charm.

I went through the same phase and I feel what you mean, they DO have their own charm and stories, I think they deserve more appreciation

Oh you'd be surprised on how common escrima/arnis/kali practitioners are. From students being forced to learn, martial artists, and the most common are the local village constabularies who carry thick rattan canes. It's a pretty cheap way of learning martial arts compared to foreign stuff like karate and taekwondo.

Many folks are telling me it isn't as popular as it used to be when they were young 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'll be honest while I know there's people doing it and there's collegiate arnis, I'm not seeing signs that it's the national past time of the people in Manila - I'm not sure it's as common as you say but I'll be glad if you're right.👍
