Text of Oath of Feanor; "Be he foe or friend, be he foul or clean, brood of Morgoth or bright Vala, Elda or Maia or Aftercomer, Man yet unborn upon Middle-earth, neither law, nor love, nor league of swords, dread nor danger, not Doom itself, shall defend him from Fëanor, and Fëanor's kin, whoso hideth or hoardeth, or in hand taketh, finding keepeth or afar casteth a Silmaril. This swear we all: death we will deal him ere Day's ending, woe unto world's end! Our word hear thou, Eru Allfather! To the everlasting Darkness doom us if our deed faileth. On the holy mountain hear in witness and our vow remember, Manwë and Varda!" The Quenya version is more powerful.

The Valar sit back and let Morgoth get away without doing a thing then get so vindictive towards the Noldor - the only ones with any balls.
@napoleoncomplex27129 ай бұрын
The Noldor *did* basically murder a bunch of their own people (condemning them to stay with Mandos, just as the Valar condemned the Noldor to). I think the whole 'fade to shadows' thing is just something that happens to elves who stay away from Valinor for too long, so that's more of a prediction than a punishment. And the Valar knew that elves fighting Morgoth, a Valar himself, was a fool's errand, so it's not like hampering the war effort with these curses would have made much of a difference in the long term. That said, even with these defences, no, the Valar are not being particularly nice here. Especially since a more successful elven expedition might have made life better for the humans and the elves who never reached Valinor as Morgoth would've taken longer to break the siege of Angband. Also, the kinslaying that resulted from that curse after the siege was broken was... unpleasant... to say the least.

@@napoleoncomplex2712 Bravo! Perfect summation. Between me and you I always thought the Valar to be like a bunch of spoiled teenagers. Self-obsessed and selfish. At least the Noldor fought back, perhaps pointlessly, but they came to care deeply for life in Arda. They did a lot more than strike a pose on Taniquetil and raise their white arms to the stars. Or that other character who apparently has spent all the ages... hunting? And that other one who has spent what? Ages.... crying! Jeez. The gods on Mt. Olympus are way more fun to be around.

@napoleoncomplex2712 It’s a plot device to further the plot, create drama, and keep u reading lol. But his character traits reflect the many parallels b/t Tolkien’s speech of Mandos & the Bible section w/ the protoevangelium (verses below 👇) - The ceasing to exist, becoming shadows or dust - Both audiences will come to know death, which hitherto wasn’t even a concern - Loss of access to a sacred area - A mechanism to prohibit re-entry - Proclamation doubles as a curse and a prophecy - A rebellion spurred by a tempter (satan/Morgoth) acting through a 3rd party (snake/Feanor) - A future of “tears unnumbered” / multiplied “sorrows.” - Growing “weary of the world,” literally, or by working “by the sweat of your brow” just to eat - Right after the below verses, God killed a lamb to clothe them in skins. A “blood for blood” parallel : “And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return … And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:14-24). And in response to the 1st shedding of blood, the Noldar were called “the dispossessed” while Cain was called “a fugitive and a vagabond.” Both were told not to return. 👇 “And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth” (Genesis 4:10-12).

I think the Valor are the true villains here. Feanor is the only one who is willing to do anything about Melkor/Morgoth and they punish him for it!!
@istari0 Жыл бұрын
Fëanor only wanted vengeance. He led the Noldor off on this poorly thought out idea of making war on Morgoth that resulted in the 1st Kinslaying where many of the Teleri died because the Noldor wanted their ships and in the following centuries in the deaths of most of the Noldor. While certainly not at the level of Morgoth, Fëanor is a major villain.
@freddovich7925Ай бұрын
It's definitely Feanor and Melkor. The Valar don't do much about Melkor for the longest time but it's also not really their responsibility. They don't have to destroy him, they just have to run the world. And they offered the Elves the chance to live with them out of safety and the Elves threw it in their faces and left in a huffy. Why would the Valar help them more? And another thing: lots of the Noldor went to Middel Earth for Feanor, yes, but also for power. They wanted their own kingdoms to rule, which is precisely the motivation of Morgoth from the beginning - "to rule a kingdom of his own and have servants who call him lord". The Valar are Eru's appointed 'rulers' of Middle Earth under him, they control the weather, oceans, plants, etc but they don't desire that power or relish in it, they just are. The Elves wanted to claim power just as Morgoth had done, not under Eru Iluvator but as independent lords. Even the Elves you see in LotR are still guilty of this, they only finally give up by going to Valinor in the end.
