As with all TW music, live is where the passion shines. The Dakota bar version is the standard for this masterpiece. How 13 year old Pau was able to compose such a powerful, gut wrenching ballad about the nightmares of addiction is beyond comprehension.

I’ll echo everyone else: Pau on vocals, live at Dakota bar is the standard. Also, I think live is best with this band, preferably in front of an audience but the Warning cave is excellent as well.

What I find amazing is that a lot of people can't differentiate between Pau and Dany's voice. I hear a very distinction between all three. Ale has a very rich and sultry voice especially as she gets older. Dany is clear and has a good range. Pau has that very distinctive vocal fry.

Ale is a perfect back up vocalist, not to say she couldn't lead if needed. I think if she had to sing for Dany for some reason she could. But she has that voice that is rock solid going to blend and give that right amount of back up vocals while she kills the bass.

Honestly I’m surprised someone requested the recorded version. Along with Crimson Queen, because it’s so stripped down Black Holes is one where you get so much more from live performance in terms of emotion.

Great reaction as always. The most remarkable thing about this song was that it was written when Pau was only 13 or 14, so very early in her song writing career. By the way, I think you have earned enough cred with Warning fans to voice honest criticism without facing the pitchforks. 😉

This is mostly all Pau. Piano and lead vocals. There are live versions that really show her passion when performing this song about addiction. So much so, many cry when watching it. Ale on bass and Dany on guitar of course and doing harmonies in the live version. Not sure on this version. Harmonies sound like Pau on this. This is from their very first album, XXI Century Blood quite a while ago. Nice reaction!

Nice reaction David, really like your honest analysis you have a good ear. Such a heartbreaking song too. The girls harmonies hmm, I would describe like a tender tearing of wet paper to spotlight the familiar imperfections we all have, they fit the message Pau delivers so well. When I first saw it live, I just sat there staring at my screen silent barely breathing for a few minutes.
@professorg9424
@professorg9424 3 жыл бұрын
Others have said it but the Dakota is the best live performance for a lot of reasons. Dany's subtle guitar and backing vocals really fill out the song. The girls also have a tendency to use as many words as they need, whether they flow naturally or not. They don't always go syllable by syllable, note for note, nor do they strictly adhere to a rhyming scheme. This is just one small thing that contributes to their uniqueness.

"Black Holes" is probably Pau's masterpiece ballad, even though she wrote it at a very young age. It's like "November Rain" by Axl Rose that he also wrote as one of his first songs in 1985, 2 years before "Appetite for Destruction" even came out. Sometimes an artists best work is his early work, where he is still free to write whatever he/she wants, not unobstructed by work and the repetition of a certain style. "Black Holes" is my personal favorite by The Warning and one of the best songs in general by anybody. I can undertsand you evaluation of the album version, however, as most others have already said, it's a pitty that you didn't choose one of the numerous live versions done a few years later, where Pau's singing is even more passionate and better (yeah, the Dakota Bar version is top, but any other live version is great, too). Another option is to listen to Pau's "Pau playing the piano" night concert, where she plays three songs playing piano only, among them "Black Holes". Even if ou don't want to do it as a reaction, watch these for yourself, you will love them.

From someone not usually a fan of ballads, she has truly outstanding examples of the form on all three albums/EPs that have been released (Fade Away and at least arguably Escape the Mind, Black Holes, and The End). She always seems to reserve those for singing herself (Dany wrote Crimson Queen, I believe).
@oliverlaue6234
@oliverlaue6234 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertkrawitz8237 Yes, I think so, too. Pau seems to be very specific aboout which songs she sings herself and which ones Dany sings. "The End" is definitely a great power ballad that would work in a big arena as well. Btw yes, Dany wrote "Crimson Queen".

@@oliverlaue6234 Their writing and arrangement, and in particular the consistent outstanding quality, is really what sets them apart from just about everyone else. Plenty of bands have some really good songs on a par with any of these, but they also have a good number of duds. DPA have the ability and determination to turn out song after song at this level, and not based on any formula. Even their ballads vary enormously; this song is nothing like any of the others I mentioned above, but all are extremely potent. The fact that David got wrong the period when this was written really speaks to that excellence from the get-go. It's going to be really, really interesting to see what they have for us in the remaining 10 songs we have yet to hear. The little clip from the "banana song" suggests that they have some very interesting harmonies in store for us.
@oliverlaue6234
@oliverlaue6234 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertkrawitz8237 Absolutely, that's one thing that really got me into The Warning. All their songs are really good (or better). They don't have any fillers on their two albums so far and even their "first try" EP "Escape the Mind" was astonishingly good considering the age of DPA at the time. I'm also very excided to find out where the new album TW3 is going. One one hand they said it's going to be heavier, but it will certainly also include at least two ballads and more of their great harmonies. I'll be interesting.

At least in the live version, there's a very light bass line, much like during Crimson Queen. I don't recall which concert; there was one where Pau didn't sing the last chorus because she wanted to hear the audience sing it. That must have been quite a moment. I could envision her doing that in a stadium, with 70,000 people singing it.

Fun Fact: The Black Hole was Disney's first PG rated movie. All previous were rated G. I wish you had done a live version, but Oh Well. Don't know who gave you the link, but you should see a live version at some point. An amazing song about addiction that has brought many grown men to tears. More amazing is that is written by a 13yo that has no experience with addiction. It is from their first album, XXI Century Blood (2017) The song was written 5 years ago. Dany's guitar solo is VERY muted in this recording, but her high harmonies are great. There IS bass in this, and that is another reason this recording is BAD. Ale and Dany singing harmony at the end while Pau is belting at the end is SO powerful! That said, this is my least favorite recording of this song that I have heard, either studio or live. Jus' Sayin' You need to hear this LIVE!

It´s interesting you don´t say a word about the thematic, this song make a lot of people cry, because they see a portrait about the addiction world and phrases like "Even black holes let me be" and "I surrender in my defeat" breacks their hearts. Please see for yourself this same song live from the Dakota Bar concert and be prepared to be surprised a lot. Just a little surprise in advance: this song was written by Pau when she has 13 years old and appears in their first album XXI Century Blood, other song from this album with a strong thematic it´s Cooper Bullets, so dark than her mom said to Pau: Can you write about unicorns and rainbows?
@robertkrawitz8237

Was that when her mom asked that? I always thought that that was more recent, but maybe that was just my impression. The story I heard was that their parents didn't want them to do that song, considering the subject matter to be too mature, but they won out as usual (just as with the length of Dull Knives, their mother's favorite candy, and so forth). Pau's answer was classic: "no".

@@AgusRodriguezY They're exceptionally nice people by all accounts (I have to use that qualifier because I haven't met them in person...yet, at any rate), but that doesn't mean that there's any weakness at all in their determination. Pau was very polite about how she told that record company exec who asked them whether they'd rather play for 12 or 12,000 people that they'd rather do their own thing, but there was not an ounce of give in her response. And spending 7 months negotiating a record contract speaks for itself. They're not just fantastic musicians. They're fantastic role models.

A great reaction,and pretty spot on with with all the nuances that this song contained,and even though your final score wasn't as high as we had all expected,it was still justifiable...But as many comments have already pointed out,this is Paus "baby",with her distinctive raspy vocals,and what a song written by a 13 year old...which leads to your other little error,as to the time frame of this song. Again as has been pointed out,this was off their first album. But to really appreciate the true essence of this song,you really need to react to a live performance of it (in my opinion,it doesn't matter which one,as Pau just kills it regardless),and sit back and enjoy Pau and her sisters go for it - and maybe,just maybe you may reassess your score. Still,this was a great reaction video dude - keeping it real as usual

David, I won't repeat what others have said about what you got wrong here, just make one simple suggestion: Do yourself a favor and listen to the Dakota Bar performance of this song. Even if you don't want to do a reaction, take a few minutes for some "David time." It will be worth it. And while you're watching, try to put yourself in Pau's place: You are a very young person (14? 15?). You have written and recorded this very powerful song. You are standing (Pau is out from behind the drum kit, and at a keyboard doing the piano accompaniment) on a professional stage performing it. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I thought that I saw something magical happening. About the time she gets to the first chorus, Pau seems to notice that the audience is singing along. Singing along to HER song. For a split-second, it looked, to me at least, that she was overcome with emotion, and was about to lose it. Of course, she recovered instantly. But I thought that it was one of the most beautiful split-seconds in the history of musical performances. Edit: I noticed that there is another (obviously later) Dakota Bar performance of this song, which was linked in another comment. This is the video that I'm referring to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/on6bfJiHlNmBh8U

Do yourself a huge favor and watch the live version from the Dakota bar I know that you'll love it, this song has sold more kleenex than any song in existance, this song makes grown men cry regularly, watch it please.

For the first time I disagree with you, 8.4 is a very low rating. It is true that music is art and that each person feels it differently and that is why I respect your opinion. This song written by a thirteen-year-old girl is much better than some holy rock group ballads. Repeating, music is an art so music is felt, not thought, and your rating comes from your head, not from your soul.

Harrumph! If InStAnT Puddinhead requested it, I feel pretty certain I'm going to see the Dakota Bar performance, but let's see. ... No? A lyric video I've never seen before. Didn't break my heart like the Live version. The guitar and bass though sounded pretty clear to me. Pau is a hell of a songwriter. She plays everything well ( as she did the piano here ) but she don't play. 😉 That is also Pau singing lead BTW not Dany. Dany is harmonizing. Good Reaction. Had you seen the Dakota Bar version, you would have given this a 9 just on charisma. Written when Pau was only 13. So six years ago??? Sounds correct to me. She's a little genius that's all.

If you watch the live version at the Dakota Bar, you’ll hear Little Gene playing the bass sounds better than this studio version. The harmonies are so good on the live version as well. And Pau sings this song with so much emotion that my eyes start to tear up; she can really deliver this song live. And, This song was actually early in their evolution which is hard to imagine a 13 year old would write about this topic. Great job as usual David!

I don't know why,but this song is giving me "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles vibes.. Possibly the programmed drum part🤔,I'm not sure,but it's an amazing tune.. However I'm afraid I have to dock you some points on my review of your review because you said it was Dany singing,when it's clearly Pau🤦..

I think that part that you says sounds rushed, is just a style. I can’t think of a specific example, but current, young songwriters like Grace VanderWhaal write lines like that. It’s just a style.

These young ladies are ahead of their peers. Well they have no peers right now Pau at the age of 9 to 13 writing songs from what she read or saw on the news and didn't live through shows a level of intelligence and maturity of someone more than twice her age now let alone then. Then as you pointed out the way they work thing lyrically with tone and pitch and the little scoops and speed of delivery. By the way Dany did the harmony here at one point you gave here credit for the way the singing was being done and it was Pau, not Dany. Granted they can sound very much a like at times. I think if you had done the live version every one is talking about the score would have been higher because of the live performance and a little older voice of Pau in it.

Love your reviews, however it makes me laugh when people can't tell the difference between Pau and Dani singing!😃 Pau has natural grit and is more nasal, & Dani has more bass to her tone and minimal nasal sound. To me anyway. 🤘😜

not snapping voices to the line leaves the emotion in. i've never heard them auto-tune or pitch correct and i hope they never do.
