In the live performance, Pau playing through that drum fill while singing lead. 🤯

if i remember correctly, the lyrics here are about the dangers of addiction to and blind acceptance of conspiracies and viral bad advice on social media. dany (lead vocalist) here plays the part of a social media influencer peddling "the sun is your enemy", while pau (drummer) plays the part of a malleable follower blindly going where the influencer leads, and becoming the "disciple" over the course of the song. for the record, i consider the warning to be hard rock, not metal :)

Brains, beauty and badassery. They dont just come to play, they've got things to say. Check out the music video for xxi century blood. It is the title song to their first album. Around ages 12, 15 & 17 then. They've been talking about social media since way back then.

They are currently ages 24,22, and 19. Your interpretation of the lyrics was very close; they said it is a statement about those who profit by spreading hate and misinformation on social media, etc. 👍😎

This song uses call and response. One voice (Dany) warns us of false ideologies on social media. The other (Pau) wants to tear down the system with those false ideologies. The sun is your enemy because it makes your false ideology apparent in the light of the day. This is a theme in several Warning songs (Z, Kool Aid Kids, XXI Century Blood). They have covered two Foofighters songs (The Pretender and Everlong). They have covered two Metallica songs (Enter SandMan, twice, and Atlas Rise). They have also opened for the Foo Fighters. So yes, Foo Fighters and Metallica are influences.

Here’s the meaning of the song as described by Pau the Drummer…. “So Disciple is about social media and how opinions are bought on social media and are fed to us in a way that we don’t even know. And how by breeding ignorance and cultivating hate people gain a lot of power and money. So that’s what Disciple is about. I saw a lot of people confused with the video, like “why are you the system and you’re telling people to kill the system?”, well we’re not the system, we (the military characters in the music video) are someone who is buying your opinion without you even knowing about it. So Disciple was a whole process to write about, but I’m so happy with the song and it’s a topic I’m really passionate about, so go stream Disciple, go check it out, the video was so much fun to record and it’s a good song, it’s so much fun to play, I find it really funny that I’m saying that it’s a good song, it’s my song, but it was really one of my favorite songs to write, I put a lot of thought into it and Daniella and I worked relentlessly to get everything across, so glad people are enjoying it.” - Paulina Villarreal

They are more on the hard rock side than metal. Check out Automatic Sun, Six Feet Deep, or Sick. I know you're not much into Metallica but you should also check out their rendition of Enter Sandman with Alessia Cara. They have a great catalog of songs that range from rock to metal. It's hard to choose your favorite sometimes.

Part of this song is about not being one of the ( sheep ) .Make your own judgement on news and issues , instead of follwing the group collective blindly .Also it could be about the news media outlets and social media pushing out conflicting and even false stories in the news purely to gain from it financially .(Which does actually happen )

Great reaction! Thanks!

They like to play with multiple vocals when they write songs. For those not familiar with their voices, it can get confusing .After a while though, you get pretty good at hearing who is singing what, when. Generally, the fuller it sounds, the more voices that are doing it. While Dany was doing the crowd interaction, it was both Pau and Ale doing the oh oh oh oh ohs. Then Dany joined back in so all 3 were doing it during the back and forth vocals.

Thanks for the twofer Randomine...here is one "interpretation" I have read, of course the Ladies write great songs that are subject to each persons individual interpretation, but this one I think is damn close considering they have written other songs along these same subject matters...for teenage girls, they have a lot to say. The song "DISCIPLE" by The Warning is about the rejection of convention and the need to assert one’s individual identity by standing against oppressive systems. The lyrics warn the listener to not be complacent, to challenge the status quo, and to not allow themselves to be victims of false promises and manipulative powers. The song encourages self-reflection and encourages individuals to take a stance against an oppressive system and to side with their individual freedom. Finally, the song emphasizes the importance of resisting apathy and complacency, and challenges the listener to become a “disciple” who is willing to stand up and fight for their beliefs.

I think the first line is saying that the Sun is out there, go enjoy it! But if you are stuck in a social media loop it's your enemy. The new that the 'World isn't Ending' has a similar vibe. Don't believe all the media guff about how terrible everything is out there. It's still fresh, it 'Could Start Again' should you wish. All pure guesswork, but I like it! If you don't chose to get out there and enjoy your life and instead choose to 'Stare at the screen until your eyes bleed' then you are a 'Disciple in the Making'. Nailed it!

Really nice analysis, lyrically. I would say yes, it's an indictment through and through. I think if you go and listen to the title track of their album XXI Century Blood you'll get a sense of their message here, that they're almost being sarcastic about, or at the very least indirect about in this case. I do agree that it isn't obvious until you either bind yourself to the feeling of one of the lyrics (and get a sort of emotional impression of indictment and admonition) or you really look at they lyrics like you've done. Kudos for taking the lyrics seriously because they really are serious even though the song is 'fun'. I think the video itself gives the greatest hint that we're talking about indoctrination and literal militarization of ideas. Likewise the video for XXI Century Blood makes explicit the message, though in that case even more clearly and less sardonically.

Ale is currently 19 years old still ('til 13th December 2024!). An interesting reaction to do - being as you have already reacted to Enter Sandman by them as youngsters - would be to see their Enter Sandman cover from this concert (Teatro Metropolitan CDMX 2022). Metallica asked them to rewrite/reimagine the song (but DON'T change the lyrics) for their Black List album - a tribute to 30 years since the release of the Black album from which Enter Sandman appeared. Great reaction - you are pretty spot on with regards your interpretation of the words. I enjoyed your lyrical analysis, thanks!

Just a little tip concerning names if you’re interested… The fanbase, The Warning Army or TWA, often refers to them as DPA collectively as well as The Warning. DPA is the first initials of the first names chronologically. D = Daniela or Dany (with a Y), guitar, lead vocals, 24. P = Paulina or Pau (like Pow), drums, lead and backing vocals, 22. A = Alejandra or Ale (like All-lay) bass and primarily backing vocals, 19. All 3 are classically trained and play piano/keyboards. Fun Fact (as Pau likes to say); Pau starts most of their songs on piano/keyboards as ballads and then takes what she has to her sisters to complete and rock-ify. Pau has stated if it was up to her to write a complete song DPA wouldn’t have many. Pau has the most amazing emotive voice. She can rip your heart out during their ballads with her rasp or slap you upside the head with her sassiness on other songs. Ale has perfect pitch recognition. Some speculate that’s why she doesn’t like to sing lead because if she goes off pitch it drives her crazy as the groups resident perfectionist. She is also considered the best on the ivories of the sisters. Ale also has remarkable timing and Pau calls her the human metronome and Ale helps keep Pau on time (plus their click track). Ale also has a beautiful falsetto which is displayed on a couple of songs (Sinister Smiles and Revenant). Ale is a bit of a chameleon as she can harmonize perfectly with both of her sisters. Dany has the widest vocal range of the sisters. She can reach the lowest notes and the highest in chest and mixed voice (Ale’s falsetto is technically the highest of the sisters). Dany is starting to incorporate her head voice in the new album and we’re not sure what the actual top of her range is. She has also worked hard on her distortion. She always had some naturally but now she can switch effortlessly between clean singing and distortion at will. I’ve also always loved Dany’s vibrato especially. Dany is also a complete guitar nerd. She programs her pedal board and plays the most beautiful melodic solos when they decide to incorporate a solo which isn’t a regular thing with them.

Metallica and Foo Fighters are two of their most important influences. They went viral with a cover of *Enter Sandman* in 2014 that now has 25.7 MILLION hits. They have covered several Foo Fighters songs AND OPENED FOR Foo Fighters in Mexico about two weeks before the death of Taylor Hawkins. This song and video were created during the pandemic. It's a great statement about those who blindly would follow pied piper leaders into a cult of personality. Pau's last line in the song says it all: "You shall remain | Inside your space | of IGNORANCE." In other words, what the hell are you doing NOT making your own decisions about your life? Put down the phone and renounce being a lemming. Think for yourself... The Warning are aptly named for a reason. If you were to go watch some of their very early videos when they were just starting out, you would know that these Mexican sisters were not yet little bilingual Catholic school girls when they first got into music at summer camps. Mom's a dentist. Dad's an engineer. He used to run a recording studio. They grew up listening to their parents' rock favorites and watching concerts on TV. The kids all learned classical piano first, then discovered Rock Band, the video game. Suddenly, they were choosing instruments. Dany started guitar lessons at eight. Pau started drum lessons at six. Ale started bass at seven, a few years later, as she's the youngest. They were a great cover band as LITTLE KIDS. But they rarely do covers anymore. They are as good as, or better than the bands they covered! And in most cases, they are more fun to watch. Their first two albums were crowd funded and independently produced! Before watching any more of their music, I'd suggest you watch their two TEDx Talks on the University of Nevada channel, from way back in 2016 and 2017. Perhaps also watch The Warning: The Mexican Rock Stars Who Happen To Be Sisters [TIDAL Rising Documentary] on the TIDAL channel. Maybe watch Mayday in the Making, parts 1-6. As much as you like it now, if you know who they are, and where they come from, their music will make a lot more sense. These ladies are now 19, 22, and 24, and just sold out their Spring tour, 19 dates in Europe and the UK. They're also back from Japan and a stint in L.A. for the launch of their new album, now in Europe and headed on to Canada, the USA, and other places this year. They already sold out a 10,000 seat arena in Mexico City for next February, and added another date there, due to demand. Their fourth album arrived June 28, and they performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live the night before. They were on MTV Push during July. They played Pol'and'Rock and Wacken Open Air festivals in Europe before tens of thousands of fans.Their superpowers are LIVE performance, music COMPOSITIONAL skills, LYRICAL depth, STAGE presence and charisma, and personal integrity. Welcome to a deep, deep, 11-year-old rabbit hole.
