What the band does not go into, is how the actual negotiations went down. Lava sent them a standard contract, which the band refused. The band red lined many aspects of the contract and sent it back. The back and forth took so long, because it wasn’t just their manager and parents doing the negotiating. Each sister would go over the contract as well. Until every clause of the contract was fully understood, a decision could not be reached. The band also got an entertainment lawyer involved. Proposal was met with counter proposal and the back and forth was difficult, but not acrimonious. The band took the stance of “well that is nice, but we can do that for ourselves. What can you do that we cannot?” The head of Lava said he had never been part of a negotiation like it. In the end, the band retained creative control over the writing process and sole control over their Patreon (which was one of the main sticking points). Fan funding, and the connection that it provided between the band and their fans was non negotiable for The Warning. Lava wanted to be the only source of income, which the band saw as a stupid idea. In the end, a new style of partnership was reached between the label and the band.

Hey, where did you get this info from? I would like to look more into it. Thanks!
@LesDexia13 Жыл бұрын
A very important point is that Lava was willing to make a lot of unusual (for the record business) concessions because they really WANTED this band. Another thing is that this band has been hands-on in the recording studio since they started writing songs and they know the process inside out, so much that they have professional production and mixing credits on their first two albums.

I think the _Lava_ group was one of the first "labels" that understood the future of the "recording industry", in that they were basically relegated to a "marketing firm for hire" rather than holding all the power as recording labels did in the past. Since these days everything is digital and there is no real need for brick-and-mortar factories pumping out physical media, what else do they have to offer? Just "connections" and skill in marketing. Which is certainly useful and worth paying for... but it's not like it once was. It's a whole new world out there, and the companies who understand their place in the scheme of things will survive, while others will die. I have a feeling that Lava will be among the survivors in this modern era.

They have just released a short documentary called ‘X Anniversary’ about how being in a band for ten years. It’s in Spanish but it has subtitles. It’s an emotional one because they talk about their younger selves and the effects and price of not having a normal childhood. Well worth the watch.

A note about why this is called "Mayday in the Making". This was produced around the time they put out a 6 song EP they called Mayday. The 6 songs are all part of the full album Error which was released some months later. Just keep that in mind when going thru their discography.

A lot of stars indulge in their glamour and wealth and forget where they come from and to whom they owe it. These girls here have been in the business for 10 years and there are still videos like this one and nothing seems forced or staged. They're grateful, and I'm sure they'll stay that way. Which I think, among other things, is also due to the culture and the accompanying upbringing.

That is, indeed, the bottom line. There has never been a band like this. The proof is TWA. No band has ever, or will ever, garner such a devoted fan base. We all know we're not just fans... each of us is a part, however small, of The Warning family. They invited us to be a part of that family. I was fortunate enough to attend the private show at The Whisky-a-GoGo in 2019, where seven countries, mostly from Europe, and 23 States were represented, in the crowd. How many other independent bands can bring that to a small, albeit world famous, club? How many? Zero. Only The Warning. They are everything a rock and roll band should be and so much more. They love music, they love performing, they love each other (the whole team), and they love us. Being the best band ever is so much more than being the best writers, players, and singers, and DPA have it all. I apologize for this long reply. I did not intend to hijack your comment. I fully agree with your statement.

@@hardknox1917 Relatively speaking. Compared to out-of-control bands in the '80s, they are pretty tame. When it comes to see them as great role models for young girls wanting to get into rock and how they have shown them it works to get famous without changing your self. Too many people sold their souls for the money... the warning didn't come from a needy background so they had the eliment of control and could negotiate what they wanted and they had a well established serious track record so Lava knew they would also get their piece so I think it was a win/win. How many of the acts you know that are signed still release their music on line through their own web site and premiere newly recorded songs for their fans outside of the record company launching everything. The history of talent being bled and dumped by record companies is on everyones mind but I think these musicians (with the massive support of their fans and even other bands and media sources) will contribute to a re-write of how it's done! If they make no more serious contribution to the industry than a soft power shift in the control struggle they will have left a legacy for other young bands to believe in and not clutch at the first offer that comes their way. Lava was competing with other "big names" but Lava made the difference by "working with" The Warning and, in the end, Lava will also show a new way to looks at signing musicians that other labes will follow. Some reaction channels still follow the old focus of talking about why the Warning isn't on the radio. That was then... this is now... 25,000,000 views on YOU Tube for one video kind of says it all. Even Lava spoke of how the "girls" came with the whole package in play and I think it was Rick who said words to the effect that people would "pay millions" to have the type of social media coverage they have. Lava got an established product and it was just a matter of making good better not starting from scratch. Good move showing the BTS info videos. A lot of reactors stick with just the music and I think it limits their audience a bit. You're doing great... even when they repeat what you already said you can take comfort in knowing you are in good company. Take Care David
