One of the most beautiful songs I think I've ever heard. I don't typically get emotional the first time I hear a song, but this one is an exception.

This band is exceptional.. they al started on piano at 3,4,5 ,6 yrs old. After receiving the game"Rock Band" for Christmas they loved it so much the parents ask them if they wanted real instruments.. of course they said yes . Today their ages are 23,21,19 yrs. Yup, we’ve all been there. It’s Paulina’s gift. ‘Black Holes’ & her version of ‘Creep’ get me every time. The key to what the songs about (my interpretation) is the title & the crackling fire. The lyrics are from the perspective of the Revenant (undead or spirit returning to haunt the living) she is haunting her killer as he goes about destroying the evidence.

The guest guitarist is Pliego Villarreal who they call Primo (cousin) because he has the same last name though not related. He is the bassist for a Mexican band called Kinky and is playing a 10 string (5 doubled) bass guitar known as a bajo quinto. This song is just another example of the diversity and compelling nature of their music and talent. 😎👍

What I find particularly notable about The Warning is their songcraft. Here we have the intro instrumental motif, then half a verse with that opening motif echoed an octave higher, the second half verse, this time with harmony, then pre-chorus ("say goodbye...") in a different key, then chorus. Repeat the intro motif, this time with harmonies. Then after the second verse/pre-chorus/chorus, a 16-bar bridge with BOTH harmony (Ale) AND counter-melody (Dany)! And then end on an unresolved chord. And oh yeah, it's the DRUMMER, all five-foot-nothing (I'm being generous) of her, singing!

We all had the same reaction! TWA will fill you in on the details of the guest musician. I don’t want to get the info wrong. There are many interpretations of Revenant out there. One thing for sure is Pau has the perfect emotive voice to sing their ballads.
@spaceknave7 ай бұрын
We don't know who the boy is. The several theories are that it is loosely based on the movie Revenant, where after a significant bear attack leaves a man (Leonard DiCaprio) mortally wounded, he is left for dead by his hunting party (Set in the 1800's), he makes it back alive and tracks down his former friends seeking vengeance. Hopefully I didn't butcher that summary. Another theory is she is singing to a lone wolf shooter who has just committed an unforgivable act. Either way it's an incredibly emotional song, they may give hints to the original intent eventually, but they will likely keep it vague as long as they can,
@DadDaughtersandDrinks7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the ideas. I remember the move Revenant pretty well (and that scene with the bear specifically has become legendary). I'm perfectly ok with not knowing, really.
@rrnum77 ай бұрын
This is probably The Warning 's most enigmatic song, but Pau has actually talked a bit about its meaning. A youtuber asked her about it and this was her answer (translated from Spanish): "Revenant is about a bounty hunter. At least that's how the song started. Now we also think of it as a message to oneself, about having to change as a person in order to move forward in life."
@DadDaughtersandDrinks7 ай бұрын
If the meaning is changing over time for the person/people who wrote the song, then I don't feel bad about not completely getting it :-)

@@DadDaughtersandDrinks That's the real songwriting artwork of The Warning - they manage to leave so much open to personal interpretation, even with such evocative lyrics. They paint the most wonderful pictures with the words and melodies, but they way they trick our minds into "filling in the blanks" is right up there - an ability they share with great storytelling authors (thinking JRR Tolkien here, who managed a similar "specific but also open to interpretation" style of description). Sheer artistry in their songwriting!

_"All I know, is it makes me want to cry"_ ... Yeah, The Warning does that. Their tunes tend to be immensely personal, and incredibly emotional. This is one of their best, in terms of that aspect. And now you grasp what _Revenant_ means. Sort of... which is how many of us see it. Like most songs they do, it's open to interpretation (deliberately so) and sometimes - especially when Pau belts out a song from her heart - it kinda whollops you. And that's a *good* thing. It means you "get it"... and honestly, isn't that what music is supposed to be _about_ ?!?!

Well, Dad, welcome to The Warning. I see you becoming more and more invested in them as you watch this concert. Honestly, you've only scratched the surface. This is only a sampling of the songs they've written and an incredible show with outstanding performances...but they've been writing and gigging for ten years. More than half Ale's life. As you dig deeper into their story you'll become more invested (especially as a father, and a father of girls). Interestingly, no matter how hauntingly beautiful this live performance is, in my opinion, the cut on the album is even more so. When you do listen to the actual album consider this...there are no studio musicians. They play all the instruments, and Revenant is an instance where they use instruments not typically used in a "rock song". There is a lyric video on their channel and I suggest just hitting play, sitting back with your eyes closed, and letting it all in. If this made you emotional, that will break you. Great reaction.
@DadDaughtersandDrinks7 ай бұрын
Wow, great advice. I'll give that a shot. I know that I've only scratched the surface, and I also know I even need to rewatch this concert several more times to really absorb it. I'll get there eventually.

I am sure that Pau wrote it in the beginning with some specific person in mind but is likely having so much fun listening to how others interpret it to let us know. Many times what we think it means evovles as we think about he words more deeply and it is easy for me to imagine that the writer can sometimes find a song writing itself to a different conclusion as they think of what to say next.

They always say that's the sign of good art - it means different things to different people, and no one is necessarily right or wrong. Especially when it means different things to the author over time :-)

Great reaction in the fact you had nothing to say - that there spoke volumes. Although Dany has the bigger range than Pau,it's Paus vocals abilities on the slower ballad numbers that I prefer. There's just something magical about her vocals that draw you in,and take over any emotion you have. Great backing vocals by Ale and Dany,especially Danys higher register here (it's not Ale folks,if you look closely you'll see),but this song was one of the slower numbers on the album that wasn't looked favorably by some Warning fans when it first came out,but oh how things have changed since,this "23" and "Breathe" proving to be fan faves now,and for good reason.

a REVENANT is "one that returns after death or a long absence"... this song by DPA/TW is the 12th one on their "ERROR" album, their 3rd since they became a band 10 years ago... to me, this song appears to be about loss, heartbreak, and pain... they have a few songs of similar theme... in this one, the protagonist seems to want to say goodby to the past after some sort of breakup or possibly a death... they are trying to come to terms with what happened and are seeking the truth about what transpired... going by the definition of REVENANT, maybe that one who has been gone is returning or has returned and maybe there is some hope for reconciliation of sorts? in this rendition of DPA/TW's *Revenant* , the guest musician is Pliego Villarreal (no relation to DPA but they do call him cousin) and he is playing a Mexican 10 string bass known as a bajo quinto... other guest musicians have been Beto Ramos (Pau's drum coach), Pablo González Sarre (Ale's bass coach and band mentor), Arejay Hale (Halestorm drummer), and Barry Stock (Three Days Grace lead guitar)... they have also shared the stage with other bands like Moderatto (an '80s glam metal parody band) and Eruca Sativa (Argentine alternative rock band)...
