*Back in 2020, I had under 1000 subscribers and I did not know what my channel was going to be and did not think new release games would have much appeal for views.
So around this time I played a bit of the beginning of this game on PS4. Now, 3.5 years later I get to experience this game 99% blind so this is just a disclaimer for transparency that I began, but shelved the game for a potential future playthough.

Yeah I think on the sub vs dub thing the best approach is probably to try and go with whatever the "default" primary recording is, assuming that info is available or can be interpreted. The English recording is definitely the primary one for Ghost, because originally the facial animations were only lip-synced to the English audio. They did eventually add Japanese lip-sync with the Director's Cut rerelease. Meanwhile Sekiro defaults to Japanese audio in all regions, a notable departure from the Souls games, so I think it's fair to say that Japanese audio was the "intended" experience in Sekiro.

fun fact: the japanese voice actors for Jin and his uncle are the ones who voice Zoro and Blackbeard in One Piece. There's also more One Piece voice actors like the one from Buggy the clown that appear in this game :D

Ahhh so happy (and surprised!) this won! Honestly one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, although I will say I purposely went slow and really absorbed the world and found that enhanced the experience a lot so I hope you don't feel too much pressure to move at a quicker pace for the sake of the videos. It's such a beautiful and moving game overall.

From what I've heard, the lip-sync is for the english dialogue and that's why I chose it during my playthrough. You can change it whenever you want though! Nice finally watching an ongoing playthrough and not one from at least 1 year ago!

1:30:13 Not the same voice actor. Yes, I think you're right that the guy they freed here is voiced by Noshir Dalal (best known as Charles in RDR2 or Kotallo in Horizon: Forbidden west among dozens of others--a busy actor, as you say), but the main character's English voice and motion capture (and face) is Daisuke Tsuji.

I’ve watched this game once before, and seeing it again from the beginning stirred so many emotions. ‘Cinematic’ does not justify the beauty and mournful grace of this game. Also, I’m grateful for the English dub. Treating your Deus Ex and Blood Omen 2 playthroughs as podcasts, was how I managed to enjoy them in a busy period of my life.

Also the whole "honor" code wasn't a thing. At least not in the 13th century. Jin's Uncle was a weirdo. Most samurai were just thugs. This idea is made more clear as you run into the other samurai of the region, but yeah...

Mapo, regarding the lock on mechanic. You may have figured this out by now, but there is in fact an option in the settings menu, that allows you to change between I believe two or three different types of lock on systems for the game. I prefer the default one after I got used to it, I feel its the most fluid, but you may prefer one of the others. Also, regarding the "Kill or Observe Leaders to get stance points" tutorial message. The observe thing means you find a certain hiding spot near a leader, they will start doing some training. By doing this you will be able get to two stance points instead of one (1 for observing, 1 for killing them). Love your playthrough!

I missed it the first time as well, but on the beach Khotan hit Lord Shimura with the back of the katana. Just to knock him out. Anyway can't wait for you to get into the rest of the game! I too think this will be right up your alley. It truly is a gem.

God Mapo, you are in for such a treat with this. Every aspect of this game is beautifully done. The characters, the story, the gameplay, but hands down my favorite thing about the game, are the environments and scenery. You’ll see what I mean, but this game has by far the most beautiful environments I have ever seen. I can’t even tell you how many times, while playing this game late into the night, I would just sit Jin in a flower field, or a cliff overlooking a valley, and fall asleep with that on screen. Just a gorgeous masterpiece of a game. Also, you mentioned Armored Core 6 in the intro. I do hope you have a chance to play that. I feel you would enjoy it.

With how much this game romanticized the samurai, I like to think of Jin's journey to the Ghost as this: from a fictional samurai to a more historical samurai of this period (Kamakura). The samurai of this time (I don't think they even formally referred to themselves as samurai yet) fought with less honor (as per Bushido, which was formalized in the Edo period, more than 300 years later) and more practicality than this game likes to show. The katana was also not a staple weapon yet. The Japanese dub is more accurate with terms used. Shimura used the term mononofu in the intro instead of samurai. Jin's main sword is called tachi, not katana. Tachi was the common longsword of this period's warrior class. Its blade is a bit more curved than the katana, best used while on horseback. It was great to see them on horseback in that battle. They are primarily mounted warriors with either spears (yari) or bows (yumi) as main weapons. If this game can be modded in PC, I can't wait for the historical accuracy mods.

God, I love this game! I honestly thought you had already played it lol; it feels like you're going down a checklist of my favorite games lately, especially if Nier is coming soon after. Despite being pretty historically inaccurate with regards to the events and certain things like the Bushido code not existing yet, it manages to masterfully capture the spirit of the Bushido and things like the Kurosawa films. Also yeah, the moment when Lord Shimura gets struck by Khotun Khan, it's actually with the hilt of the katana, not the blade; easy to miss and I missed it on first playthrough myself so I don't blame you. With 1:30:00 this is actually not the VA for Jin Sakai doing double duty (Jin's VA and face are Daisuke Tsuji), that Straw Hat is Noshir Dalal, who as you correctly remembered has played many, many characters over the years, Charles from RDR2, Bode from Jedi Survivor, Rampart from the Bad Batch, etc. I swear every game I play he's in, in some capacity lmao.

Exciting! I just started this game recently too. I think your choice of english dubs was a good one. I tried starting with the Japanese voiceover, and it was very good, but the game doesn't have environmental subtitles, so if you don't speak Japanese, most of the side-conversations and little comments by your character just don't get translated at all. It's a real shame! But either way, looking forward to seeing you play through this!

Glad you did English VA, the voice actor for Jin is also the character model used in game so it really isn't the same when you have Japanese enabled especially with the lip movements not matching in Japanese, which is quite jarring to look at. You are in for a treat with this game, currently doing another full run.

Such an awesome game. If you're already playing on Hard, I'd definitely recommend trying Lethal Mode for a bit. It is a bit more difficult - enemies are a little more aggressive, and parry windows are a little tighter - but mainly, it just stops the damage sponge effect. One hit, and they're done, and in my experience, any mistake that would kill you on Lethal would kill you on Hard too. Once you get a feel for it, it's enormous fun.

@@NewsofPE no there isn’t. I am very sure that that is only the DLC. I’m currently doing a Japanese playthrough on the latest version and there is definitely no lip syncing.
