Great video! I don't think Larry Riley gets enough credit for being responsible behind the Steph and Klay draft picks (although I don't think he's with GSW anymore). Who would've thought these two snipers, along with Dray in the 2nd rd, would be the ones to shift the entire trajectory of the organization

@AthleticAlchemy making a follow up in 5 years, "And in 2023, the Warriors drafted Brandin Podziemski at 19, yet another guard. He could shoot in college, but his shot didn't translate to the NBA. The Dubs passed on best player available Cam Whitmore, who went 20th to the Rockets and went on to be an All Star." Seriously though - I'm rooting for Podz to make it - and I worry about drafting for fit rather than best player available!

I used to work out at the same gym as Adonai. He was a really nice guy. I'm 6'3 and he might have been 6'6 + at best. Just like Dray is closer to 6'3/6'4 than 6'6. Height is almost always inflated by at least 3 inches. They missed out on Brunson in the Evans draft. They also could have had Mitchell Robinson instead of Evans. New Orleans knew the Dubs really wanted Smiley and they drafted him just ahead of the Warriors then flipped picks, got cash and another pick so they could get Kirk's "Jokic." Well they don't have any picks in the next draft as of now so at least they can't blow it next year.

Its the thing no one dares speeking about; Kerr cant/wont develop young players. If he's giving an option to play a decending old f*ck of an ascending young player and they are at the same point, Kerr will play the old f*ck. Poole got to develop bc Kerr had no choice. Thats also how Looney got playing time and McCaw.

Another way to measure draft history is to ask who are the only two teams since the merger to draft 3 guys and get 4 rings from them. Dubs and Spurs are it. Moody is on track to be Looney part 2. Smart and humble keeps coming to work doing whatever he can to add value, eventually becomes a key piece of a champion.

Nice job. Astute noting Dub's "misses" when "drafting for need." It's safe to say they just haven't had front office people who were good at evaluating talent. To this day. But you have to wonder what the roster would've looked like over the years (or even now) if they'd just drafted the "best player available," and instead traded for "need."

Def havent had a great draft history lol. But at the same time, had things been better in the past, we most likely wouldnt have had the current big three and all the success with them. Yeah u never know and perhaps we couldve had similar success in the past but these things rarely happen. So the fact we have had this group of players for the last decade plus is still sth that makes me happy. Sidenote, ill admit im not a lifelong dubs fan so i didnt really go through the bad years. Not from the states so usually just supported certain players or teams i liked, but never like i was a real fan of a team. Fell in love with steph in 2011-2012 and started to fall in love with the team as a whole. Told myself before the dubs became great that this was my team from here on out. I know this wont last for much longer but its been a great ride and yeah, ill be with the dubs whether they r good or bad.

Moody and JK are hits if they get a role and minutes. Remenber KD saying management and coaching made his dust up with Draymond weird by not talking about is? The same way nobody is talking about the coaching staff messing up Moody and JK. You cant explain Moody riding the bench all season long but getting play off minutes and playing well. If you couldnt get him to play like that during the season thats on coaching, not the player. Same for JK. He played well in absence of Wiggens but then you bench him? For both dudes its: give them minutes, play to their strengths. Kerr is a good coach but he's not a Popovich. When Aldridge wasnt working out Pop talked to him and changed the way he used him and played to his strenghts. Next thing you know LA thrived. When Danny Green messed up Pop cursed his ass out BUT put him back in because you learn by playing, not by sitting on the bench (we would all be all stars if watching was all it took). Let's be real. there is a difference in the way Mike Brown coached Keegan Murray up, and the dubs staff coached the young guys down.

Never ever draft for position. That's plain ignorant. Anyone on the YMCA floor knows you pick the best player..
@plethora21
@plethora21 Жыл бұрын
Placing a higher value on fit + floor actually makes sense in the Warriors' current context. The Warriors can't afford to keep everyone, so you get the best value if you draft a guy that can contribute for a few years before you have to decide who leaves to make the salary work. The issue with Wiseman is that he was neither BPA, best fit, nor game ready. Dude was not suited for the role the Warriors wanted from him and this was obvious before the draft. If you are taking a flier on tools and this guy needs to reinvent their game to fit your team, they are not worth the #2 pick. This role could have been filled by the TPMLE too, so why the hell did they even spend a #2 pick to overpay for a worse performing guy than someone they could have gotten in FA. They even had Chriss on the team, who was already good enough as a 3rd string center (shame that injuries derailed his career, but that is hindsight). Fans like to complain about the Warriors lacking size, but often times, size (at the 5) comes at a cost. IMO, the value of size isn't in the playoffs. It's in the regular season where it can lessen the wear and tear on Dray and Looney. This was my opinion in 2020 and it hasn't changed. The team's championship in 2022 validates it.
@RV1AND
@RV1AND Жыл бұрын
It wasn't about his role for the Warriors, or fit. It was a pure upside play. At the time the dynasty looked like it could be over, with KD gone, Klay having missed a year with a torn ACL, and the worst record in the league. The front office knew they were going to be good enough to prevent another top 3 pick, but good enough to compete for a title? That was a total unknown. They figured it was their one chance to get a top talent with maximum upside even if the floor was low and the fit wasn't ideal. I'm sure they hoped he would have the length/athleticism to contribute to at least a Javale McGee level in the near-term, but that pick was really about the long-term. It was a home run swing that whiffed embarrassingly (I do think there's plenty of room for criticism of that strategy though, to me they didn't need to take a home run swing at that time).

@@RV1ANDWiseman has slow feet and is averse to physical contact. Those are both horrible traits for a big man to have and those traits were apparent before he was drafted. At the time, I felt that LaMelo had higher upside, was a better fit, and was safer. And I wasn't a LaMelo stan either. I did not feel great about the idea of drafting LaMelo, but I sure as hell preferred him over Wiseman.
