Teared up seeing Ovi rush to the celebration. Teared up even more listening to Oshie talk about his dad. And just pure chills watching Ovi get that cup in his hands and hoist it up as high as he humanly could. This was the most fun I've had watching the playoffs in a while, man.

Can we talk about Ovechkin’s consistency all year long? He started the season by scoring back-to-back hat tricks. He led the nhl in goals for 143 days and never fell lower than 2nd place in goals at any point of the season. He helped Washington clinch another division title when many critics had the Washington Capitals as a bubble team after all the changes they made. Then comes the playoffs. He scores the game winner in the last minute against Pittsburgh in game 3 and assists on the game winners in games 5 & 6 to slay the dragon. He scored at least 1 point in 19 of 24 playoffs games (including every game of the finals) and breaks a Capitals franchise record for goals scored in a single playoffs. Now that’s what I call consistency!

Born and raised in the Vegas valley. Never really followed hockey until it was announced that Vegas was getting a team. Fantastic season by VGK, but it definitely hurts to see my hometown team lose. Nevertheless, congrats Caps fans, it’s cool that Ovi finally won the cup (just wish it wasn’t at T-Mobile, haha). Hopefully the Knights get back soon and win one for Vegas, but even though the future looks bright, we all know nothing is ever guaranteed in sports. I look forward to attending the meet up in July, Shannon!

Bradlee Carney I mean I get that many fans of other teams feel that way regarding VGK and their success this year, but nowhere in my post was I complaining. I’ve been a sports fan my whole life, so while I do recognize the amazing accomplishments of VGK in their first year, I also recognize how difficult it is to win a championship, and how rare those opportunities can be (take the Capitals, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, etc). Every team and fan base wants to Capitalize (xD) on their opportunities, no matter how young or old the franchise is because tomorrow is not guaranteed.

You summed it up perfectly. Been a caps fan for over 30 years and there were so many 'Here we go again with the same old Caps' moments during the entire Caps run this year. But as many times those moments of doubt started to creep in, the Caps would slay those playoff demons one by one. Hearing all the comments that we were going to choke. Losing both home openers to Columbus, blowing a 2-goal lead late in Game 1 vs the Pens, BEATING THE PENGUINS IN OT IN PITTSBURGH, Losing 3 straight to Tampa Bay after winning the first 2 in Tampa, winning a Game 7 on the road, not blowing a 3-1 lead, beating Fleury, etc. I cried when Game 5 was over, I was satisfied with the Caps beating Pittsburgh, but my brain could not fathom them winning the whole thing. I watched the highlights of that Kuzy OT winner vs the Pens about a 100 times just to make sure it actually happened. So glad they won in Game 5 because I planned a camping trip for the weekend after and it would have sucked having to worry about Game 6. And I never anticipated them to still be playing hockey in June.

I'm so glad ovechkin won it and Vegas didn't. As a AVS fan I don't cheer for the caps but this year I was pretty invested in the caps and I'm just glad to see one of the greats capitalize on it. Congrats Caps fans!

Proof sometimes less is more. Addition by subtraction. On paper the Caps didn't look as strong as last year, but it isn't a paper sport. It wasn't a Hollywood ending, but Vegas's run is still movie-worthy.

I also argued from about the beginning of the Pittsburgh series that this was an improved Kuznetsov and though he's a defenseman an improved Carlson and for all that I got wrong about this playoffs at least they proved me right.

M B Good point. I've said before that especially given the parity in the present climate of the league off-ice factors (like pressure, media pressure. Etc.) can make a mile of difference in a game of inches.

TheSportsBoffin 89 let's see Edmonton not making it shocked everyone that picked them this year and let's be honest a lot of people did. Pittsburg being eliminated no one expected that Vegas getting in the playoffs and going all the way to the finals surprised a lot of people. Winnipeg knocking out Nashville shocked the music city the crazy referring of the regal season drove people bananas the crazy stupid answers from Bettman that caused more problems then rights. Both Vegas and Washington touching the east and west finals trophy omg no one dose that well they did. McDavid getting another 100 point year on a team that sucked is amazing Brad Marchand liking people and the NHL telling him to stop is funny as hell. Yep this season was one too remember.

I took my five year-old son to downtown DC today to watch the game on the outdoor viewing party. It was amazing. There were somewhere around 20,000 people outside of Capital One Arena and another 18k inside. This long time Caps fan has all the feels after watching Ovi and Backstrom carrying the Cup together. I think you're right, Shannon, that we will be surprised to hear the extent of Backy's injuries. I didn't see him take a faceoff in the last three games so it seemed he reinjured that gnarly busted finger or there's another injury on top of that. Great analysis! I enjoyed your vids. Cheers!

I live in Hawai'i but my mom grew up Western Minnesota and my mom met my Hawaiian father at UM Duluth where Hockey is life. I grew up in the D.C. metro area hence me being a Caps fan. I was worried for a bit there but we did it we did it and I'm so happy! The parallels between them and the 97 wings are crazy. A team that couldn’t get over the hump and win the cup with a captain that was a sure fire hall of famer and scored a bunch of goals. A team that was the favorite to win the cup the last couple of years but lost. They come in somewhat under the radar one year and they win the whole damn thing breaking a 42 year drought.

Lifelong Capitals fan here. This year was unreal. I said the past 2 presidents trophies "this is our year", this year I said "we'll be out in the first round. I've cried tears of joy the past 2 days because I knew they weren't going to let this 3-1 lead slip away. They are in fact, a different capitals team and I'm so proud that ovechkin has evolved his game to that of a champion. I was one who thought that the Capitals would be better off without ovechkin, that he wasn't a leader. Well, he has made me proud. Now, I spend tons of money on memorabilia for my champs!

As a Vegas fan and Vegas resident, I couldn't have asked for a better year. I would have been happy making it to round 2 and losing, that would have been overkill to me. Being the Western conference champions and making it to the finals is more than I would have ever dreamed of. Very proud of the Knights, I feel like if they did this well this season, the potential for the future is incredible. There's so much room to grow and get better, we might not have been an all star team just quite, but next season maybe we will be.

I've watched Hockey Guy vids for a while now, and this is my first comment. Shannon, the content you put out so consistently, is totally awesome. I really like learning about random pieces of history, discussion on all kinds of other stuff.... it's all awesome. Absolutely agreed that 2018 playoffs has been one for the ages. I have never seen a player win the grandest of trophies and see true emotion like when Ovechkin first took the cup from Bettman. I got tears watching him lift the cup and see the back of Ovi's jersey skate away with that beautiful trophy.

I am an Islanders fan, I have been since I was a small child. However I for some reason have liked the Caps and some other teams as well, to see Ovi one of the greatest players of all time hoisting the cup with so much emotion was a feel good moment. As a Vegas fan, I’m not mad. We weren’t even supposed to make the playoffs, let alone compete in the Stanley Cup Final. What this team has done for the city is enough. They came into Vegas during a time of terrible tragedy, helped heal a city, and turned Las Vegas into a true hockey town. We’ll be back. The 2017-18 NHL season ended today, 6/7/18. On this date a year ago, we VGK fans didn't even know who would be on this team until two weeks later. The players that eventually made up the roster gave this city more to cheer about than we ever dreamed would be possible in our inaugural season, especially in the wake of the senseless tragedy that occurred the very week the season started.. We fans couldn't be more grateful or more proud of the job this team did.All season long we kept wondering when that inevitable losing streak might happen, but it never came. This team hadn't lost more than 3 games in a row all season, and coming into this game 5, to win 3 in a row didn't seem the slightest bit out of reach; especially when you consider the Knights had already won 5 in a row in these playoffs....TWICE. Our hats are off to the Washington Capitals; congrats on your successful quest for the Cup. I was there tonight, and as hard as it was to swallow, it was a privilege to be able to see in person Ovechkin hoist the Cup...for if it had been any other team besides the VGK, I would've been rooting for him to win. Thank you VGK for an amazing season. And Hockey Guy thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge in such an unbiased manner. You rock!!!

Congratulations Alex Ovechkin in particular & The Washington Capitals as a team. It was great to here What the Capitals players had to say after lifting Lord Stanley's Cup for the first time. Ijust hope as a Rangers fan in the next 3 to 4 seasons we can finely end our own Stanley Cup drought but for now well you have to take your hat off to The Capitals they did it at last. keep enjoying Hockey / Ice Hockey to every fan that watches Hands Down Hockey you are all wonderful people no matter what team you are a fan of.

What a great ending to absolutely thrilling playoffs (and my team wasn´t even in it)! Well deserved Cup for the Caps! I am so happy for Ovi and this team. I am not a Caps fan, but this team won me over during this run. Would have been perfectly fine with a VKG Cup win, but seeing Ovis´ joy, determination and him wearing his emotions on his face every game was just awesome! Kinda wish we had more games coming...
