▶The Gaea Armor sucks! In Mega Man X5, we were introduced to X's most imposing armor yet: the Gaea Armor. While it had a great look and some solid ideas on paper, in practice, it has almost everything going against it! Today, I am going to explain what makes the Gaea Armor so bad and talk about how close it was to greatness. How would you have fixed the Gaea Armor? Do you like it as-is? There was an attempt to make the armors balanced and it backfired completely. Falcon might not be able to charge subweapons but Gaea can't use them at all and isn't very agile in a platformer. Then you remember that Zero's also in the game if you want that "great power with some drawbacks" kind of run but can use subweapons so Gaea is further shafted to bad ending emergency backup.

@@bestaround3323 Sorry, but getting an Infinity -1 Sword and having to give up your workhorse armour that can actually do many things better isn't worth "the bosses die fast;" in a game where pattern recognition is the main strategy that you've been learning for over half the game it's just a bad trade.

Falcon armor was so broken that they completely destroyed it with the nerfs in X6, in that game there are a lot of levels that would be trivialized by the invincible infinite dash of falcon armor, blade armor is like a falcon armor not so powerfull and not so nerfed but it is terrible when u compare blade armor with Shadow armor and Zero two characters way stronger that make blade Armor obsolete

@@bestaround3323 There's practically no bosses left worth using the Gaea armour on, and you're already at the point where you've learned to fight them with Falcon. You're learning a brand new playstyle at the end of the game for minimal payoff when you can do far better with the skills you've already honed.

If the Gaea armor was designed to be collected without the Falcon armor, it would open more possibilities for replay ability. “Oh, you’re playing X5? Are doing the Falcon route or Gaea route?” You can’t say that because the Falcon route is the only route.

And X6 only corroborates on that, as you start with the falcon, but still, gaea's excuse is that it's an really old prototype (that uses the hard helmet of the Light armor) that probably didn't survive between the games

i would also argue that making them only usable after being completed really lowered the gaea armor usability. since, outside a couple of collectibles, there's no real reason to use it, as it makes you so slow. it cant even make use of the addon system in the game for some stupid reason.

X5 Addendum fixes the Gaea Armor minus the tackle idea. Which is actually a good idea that is feasible to mod since the Falcon Armor already had an "air tackle" with the flight mode. Addendum just makes X5 better in general lol

The Shadow armor stings even more in my eyes as it would've been a great armor... If it weren't in the one game that makes airdashes mandatory unless you get creative with parts (well, one of two: Xtreme 2 also required the upward airdash at the very end, but my point still stands that it would have been exceptional in any other X title that weren't those two).

I honestly think that X and Zero's Gate 2 segments were switched on accident. Zero can air dash no matter what and and X would be able to get through the crusher part no problem.

@@ColeFam what makes the unique segments especially baffling is that *High Max* of all fights was given a Shadow Armor exclusive solution to prevent softlocks but the segment right after him wasn't. This creates an even more preventable softlock that could've been fixed by either allowing you to switch characters and/or armors mid-stage (which also could've helped out its predecessor) or by making it a separate Gate 3 stage to let you change armor without losing so much progress.

You can actually get really creative with Gate Stage 3 and Shadow Armor, while you hang from that platform leap off and at the apex of your jump use a charged crescent slash followed by a giga attack and those two should give you enough leeway to make it across I’ve seen someone do it in a video before and it can work.

Rangda Bangda Mk. II can be defeated easily even with Armorless X. But try not using the Gaea Armor in Axle the Red's and Izzy Glow's stages to get the Life Extenders.

In most circumstances (one exception being Tofu Boy in Super Meat Boy since Tofu Boy is a secret joke character whose purpose for existing is to not fit in), when you make a game you should remember that characters and stages are supposed to be made for each other. In X5's case, the fact that it is impossible to use the Gaea Armor in the eight states without backtracking because you must visit all of them before you can get the Gaea Armor (not counting funny tricks to get the two pieces that are supposed to require the Falcon Armor without it), they don't really need to follow that rule. The final stages however should have, and they don't. You have a character whose defining characteristic is being slow and strong? Okay, enjoy some Quick Man lasers. That makes sense, I guess. You know what actually would've been a really neat idea? Split the final stages (at least the first two anyway) into two tracks. One for everything except the Gaea Armor, and one blocked by V Blocks exclusively for the Gaea Armor. The best excuse for the helmet would be to call it responsible for Quick Charge. Making it turn weapon energy into health would be reasonable too. Also, I think they meant for the limited mobility to be balanced with an absurdly overpowered Buster.

I love the idea of Virus Stage 1 having a Gaea block puzzle. That would have been an incredibly fun idea.

It is a base great armor, It's supposed to be a trade of using boss weapons for a quick charge shot, high defense, spike resistance and a "special" kind of dash (that honestly it's just a gimmick, the armor suffers heavily to reach certain spots in the final stages due it's low speed), so a "take all hits and hit everything until the end" armor. THE PROBLEM with the armor is that they thought that was enough, even in X6, the Shadow Armor, that had the same limitations, was able to use ARMOR PARTS, which even allowed it to become a dynamic armor (do you shoot heavily and evade, or go straight for charged slashes only). The Gaea armor CAN'T equip armor parts. The gimmick dash could've been given a boost to actually damage enemies for example if you used the Hyper Dash Part. The armor would've been extremely powerful if you can equip it the Ultimate buster (although there's a bit of a cooldown time between shots) and even though the armor already has a "built in" quick charge, the power outage would've been awesome. It's funny because the ULTIMATE ARMOR, the one with the UNLIMITED NOVA STRIKE, was allowed two armor parts, when it really didn't even needed it, so yeah it kinda feels like they just wanted you to keep that armor if you're trying to 100% the game or if you want to play with imposed challenges (not counting of course the only places where you're supposed to use it to get the heart upgrades in Volt Kraken, Crescent Grizzly and Spike Rosered stages and making the second stage of the Zero Space a more manageable task). I wish it could be equipped with armor parts, even one slot would allow for a lot of things. I love the design personally, it is heavy and looks ancient, like a prototype armor, I guess that's the "lore" reason it's not able to use parts but still, it is a great looking armor.

A real shame that it's stated to be a defensive armor, but has the exact same damage reduction as the Falcon Armor and Fourth Armor. It was really close to being really fun. The biggest problem is that in a standard playthrough, it takes until practically the end of the game to get. I just wanna use it in stages.

@@ColeFam Speaking of, yeah, that's another thing, look at the perspective of HQ during the events of X5, the Earth is having a CRISIS, and yet you can use unarmored X like it's nothing (Zero makes sense since, the whole virus thing). The Gaea Armor could've been an amazing explorer armor. You're afraid the mission might be too tough or you don't know what's ahead? Hey, Dr. Light left us this armor, is a prototype and can't use weapons, but it has great defense and power, let's secure the area using this armor and then return with another one if you need to replay the stage. Instead of reusing the Fourth Armor, we should've been given the armor from the start (replacing the Fourth Armor being destroyed). It's already so hindered anyway that you'd eventually want to change with the new Falcon Armor or get Zero some action when you get more comfortable in the missions. It REALLY IS A SHAME, look at the armor, IS BEAUTIFUL, I like the concept of a heavy armor and good power at the cost of versatility but that's the whole idea. They MADE ME love the Falcon Armor (I love to fly around with that armor and do nothing a lot xD) but I'd take the Gaea Armor ALWAYS if it was more usable.

@@yeyo3659 I both agree and disagree with the idea of having the Gaea Armor from the start. On the one hand, it would've given us a reason to use the armor more as well as a reason to use unarmored X (assuming the Gaea Armor still couldn't use special weapons) until we can get a better armor set. On the other hand, I really liked how X5 and X6 showed that X actually kept the upgrades from the previous games rather than throwing them out and starting unarmored like in all the other games. It sort of addressed the age-old argument that Mega Man *shouldn't* throw away boss powers and upgrades between the games' stories.

My proposal for what the armor pieces should do to give that tanky unstopable juggernaut feel. Head parts: Allow you to recover health from weapon energy pick up but removes special weapon use. Body parts: Giga attack, massive defensive increase, and removal of hit stun/knock back Buster parts: unchanged. Fast charging high damage short range shot. Hold onto walls. Leg parts: unchanged. Shunt special blocks when dashed into, and spike immunity.

Need to use special weapons for the armor to be worth anything. (It needs time stop for the quickman sigma stage) Falcon Armor lets you use normal special weapons (Like the firefly). Gaea armor should be about charging up the special weapons to fire the stronger versions (like the huge laser beam), but be unable to use the normal ones. For the head part, I'd love it if it gave the armor 4 equip parts slots, so you customize it more. Would make it more interesting too >.>

I would think the helmet just speeds up the charge shot like X8 Helment Part I. Thou it wouldn't make sense due to lack of special weapon and its a completely different buster.

I see it as something like MM6's Rush armors. You have the aerial mobility armor with lesser attack and the heavy-duty attack armor with lesser mobility. And as Cole Man said, its slowness and short rage wouldn't be much of a problem if it had a higher defense to compensate.

There's another method (and much faster) to get the Body part with Zero. It involves abusing the temporary invulnerability that the Sigma virus gives to him and the use of the dash part to spawn enough of those viruses to get the invul effect.

@@ColeFam Yup, Jumper part + Zero double jump does the trick for that one. Edit: Actually you also need Jumper as well for the Body part, but yeah it's possible to get Gaea before Falcon. Just gotta rely on Zero for both of those parts.

@davidchez9376 Jumper still requires beating several stages or intentionally getting game overs. But that is indeed useful information, thank you. Being able to start using it before completing the armor would certainly help, too. I guess X5 (and X6) trying something new should be applauded, even if it didn't pan out exactly right.

Honestly, I like the design and concept of the Gaea Armor, and I don't mind _most_ of its drawbacks (such as limited range, no Parts and no special weapons). But it being the only armor that makes X slower (and being unable to equip Speedster or Hyper Dash) is the thing that kills any desire I might otherwise have to use it outside of Squid Adler's and Axel the Red's stages.

Ooo Oo OO I like this. I love the Gaea armor myself, also disappointed that its practically a late game armor. One thing I can easily retcon for the head armor being useless is that the arm armor gives it a big power boost while the head armor lets it be known that it makes charging the buster like almost instantaneous! One more thing about the dash, I would love for X to turn it into a command grab and make it so you can toss the enemies at other enemies. Make dashing into enemies muchly worth it

The Gaea armor only really has one purpose: to walk on INSTA-KILL SPIKES. Technically, the ULTIMATE ARMOR should give you that ability. I prefer in X6 how the Shadow Armor allows you to walk on and mantle spikes...but then they go and ruin the experience by putting in the "leap of faith" in Gate's Lab 2 which you can't get past without all the special attachments to make your jump longer. I don't know who designed X5 and X6 but they might as well be fired. They had two perfect opportunities to make the games memorable and screwed it all up.

I think honestly the fact Fighting Fenrir is based on this armor is the best part. But if I were to improve it. Special weapons only shoot fully charged projectiles so you get more power with less ammo. Increase the time dashing. As well have his dash just damage enemies.

Perhaps the biggest problem in Mega Man X5 and X6 is that the armors have to be complete before you can use _any_ of the pieces. Given X6's reputation, that may sound crazy, but having just completed another run through of X6 (via the X Legacy Collection 2) as X, Zero, Ultimate Armor X, and Black Zero, I still had fun. *Unlike* my first attempt (also via the X Legacy Collection 2) at Mega Man X7. Over an hour in and I can _almost_ make it to the sub-boss of Deep Forest a.k.a. the usual first Maverick Stage you tackle. *Anyway,* even if you couldn't mix and match armor sets, just having whatever piece protects against Spikes would really help with some of the _meh_ of X5 and X6. Though I'd prefer being able to mix and match a la the 20XX games.

I really like a lot of things about X6, it was really close to being great, so no worries. X5 and X6 really needed to be able to use the armors as you acquired them and then maybe having an overall bonus for the completed armor. Of all of X7's missteps, at least X could use the armor one piece at a time as soon as you find it

I like how Falcon/Gaea is a throwback to MM6's Power/Jet Armors. In terms of improvements, I think the dash attack is a good idea, but still being vulnerable to shots, and that the slower dash should be able to be continuous by holding the button. I also like the idea of charged-version-only special weapons, rather than disregarding them altogether.

Gaea Armor's only purpose was to act as Hard mode. But Armorless X does that too. At least it completes the concept of Heaven (Falcon) and Earth (Gaea) fully fleshed out for the armors. Unlike the more shallow concept of Samurai (Blade) and Ninja (Shadow) in X6.

One of my best X5 memories is clearing Zero Virus Stage 1 with the Gaea armor. The idea of sacrificing mobility in a platformer is always going to be a tough sell, I think. Add in range and special weapons in a Mega Man game, and the upside has to REALLY be an upside. But we only got "kinda sorta" an upside since Zero and X's other armors don't particularly struggle at any part of the game the Gaea Armor excels in, except those 2-3 heart tanks.

I've only beaten the game with the Gaea Armor lol. I liked the idea of a defensive themed armor in a series with so many offensive options. I didn't know its damage reduction was the same though, that's lame. Could've at least been 60%. Loved the buster though.

I had no idea the Gaea Armor was considered bad. I love how slow X is with it since it gives a good feeling of how heavy it is. That and its charge shot is really strong. The helmet doing nothing isn't new. After all X1 has a helmet that certainly exists. Gaea Armor is honestly one of the few good things about MMX5.

In my sincere opinion, the geae armor is a flawed atempts to make a Mighty Glasier type form but they forgots the mighty part. The Chest armor could haves at least prevents knockback, the Buster could haves Guard Breaking abilities to compensates the lack of special weapons instead of the shoot eraser, the helmet could at least haves x1 headbut.

shadow armor did everything the gaea armor did but without the slowdown. though the biggest issue there is while it's based on a freaking ninja (high mobility) it can't airdash. i get why, balance reasons. but like, COME ON!

People even jokingly call it the Gay-a Armor lol, I even think the X7 Glide Armor looks better and might actually be more useful even in a game like X7, but yeah that mysterious armor you showed off is pretty much the Gaea Armor done right and looks really cool.

Always thought it weird to X8 armors being better in defense then THE TANK armor. All the buffs Gaea needed, Icarus and Helios have it, even Zero and Axel could just bought a chip for it. Ultimate having both specs also feel like a not necessary trashing for gaea, it didn't needed to be so beefy as it was in X8,

Honestly, I liked the Gaea Armor's design but being limited to the 4 Sigma Stages really hurt its playability. At least X DiVE remedied this, well, the Offline Version I mean.

I heard that Capcom actually had major plans for the Gaea Armor helmet before they had to be scrapped. Originally, it would allow you connect to a network that would let you communicate with other players and harass them for having different taste in anime from you and publicly lament your prospects in romance. It was a revolutionary mechanic for a platformer for its time. Ah, what could have been. Wasted potential for sure. It has no style, it has grace. This armor is a waste of space.

The Gaea armor wasn't a bad idea but in X5 where u had to get all 4 parts to use the armor is pretty bad. Not being able to use special weapons sucks. Walking on spikes & moving/destroying some blocks is pretty weak compared to flight & invulnerability

Mega Man X6 had a PERFECT OPPORTUNITY in Gate's Lab to make Megaman feel like a Ninja - and spin the gameplay into a more NINJA GAIDEN/ SHINOBI style. Everything was perfect. The invulnerability to spikes. You have a sword. You shoot ninja stars. The music... And then they go and screw it all up with the "leap of faith" which the Shadow Armor, for the most part, can't do without the armor parts. Why didn't they just let you have NOVA DASH to cross the gap? Once you get past the "leap of faith" the Shadow armor lets you make short work of the bosses (except for Infinity Mjnion) and kill Sigma with ease. The Gaea armor, by comparison was completely unnecessary beyond the armor buff.

I still firmly believe that X and Zero's Gate 2 stages were swapped by mistake. Zero will have an air dash no matter what, so he can clear that gap. Meanwhile, no matter the armor, X can survive the crusher part.

okay so i did some digging regarding the Gaea armor, if you look at the manual for Megaman X5, there's the section of the Gaea armor. What's odd is what it's said there. A heavy armor with enhanced armor plate While wearing Gaea armor: >You cannot charge a Special Weapon. >You won't take damage from thorn traps. >You can push a special block by dashing towards it. You can also destroy a special block with a charge shot. I guess that explains why it has unused palettes for the Gaea armor? It was likely intended to use Special Weapons still but with the drawback of not being able to charge it.

I think that the developer of 20XX and 30XX, who are called Batterystaple, had the right idea for making a very tanky armor, because their idea for a GAEA like armor is the Armatort, where its helmet whenever you obtain any health pickups it can also add them to armor, its chest piece grants immunity to knockback, the arm cannon makes the charge shots cancel enemy projectiles, and the leg parts allow you to hover for a bit, and then if you manage to get the complete 4 piece set, that armor makes you completely immune to environmental damage, which means you won't ever be damaged by spikes or lava and that kind of stuff, and that easily made it my favorite armor set for that game, as on the marathon endless mode, I would stack hundreds of armor pickups and become almost unkillable, while my second favorite set to build was the Owlhawk, since it focused on power enhancement and made the abilities stronger, which was pretty good but on some runs you would not survive the damage that was done to you, which is why if the GAEA had been anything similar to the armatort from 20XX, it could have easily become the best armor specially for beginners, instead of the never selected armor for that game, since it just had too many cons for it to ever be selected specially with the slowdown, because in X6 the Shadow Armor had a similar gameplay feel to the GAEA in the sense that you couldn't use powers, and you also could walk on spikes and that kind of stuff but its drawbacks were not bad, so its why a lot of people used the Shadow armor instead of the Blade, as it was pretty fun to use and very edgy looking.

@@ColeFam There are 4 armor sets in 20XX and 30XX, the Armatort is focused on playing defensively and helps with survival, the Owlhawk is designed to improve All your powers whether its the energy they use or damage they deal, the Oxjack is designed all around mobility and quick reaction, as it has quick charge shots and multiple air dashes with even a dash shield, and the last armor the Dracopent is designed around a Zero kind of playstyle, since it gives multiple jumps and makes your normal weapon overall better to use, the really fun thing about 20XX and 30XX is that you can mix and match these armor augments, and pretty much build your character your ideal playstyle, but the hard thing is that its a rogue lite game so you can't expect to always get what you want in your runs, so this makes it pretty hard to get the 4 parts for a specific armor set, but when you do it just gives you the best feeling since it feels like a whole different game. Another really fun thing about 20XX and 30XX, is that you can play Coop with a buddy no matter if they are at your place or if they are at their own home, and the latency isn't as bad as some of the fighting games I've played online.

The Gaea Armor is honestly one of my favorite armors in the series, at least in the upper half of all that you can get in the main titles. Even though it's held back by some flaws, I still appreciate it for being the first armor X gets that has the abilities it grants, most notably the spike protection it gives you -- in that regard, you have to think it was programed the way it was because that kind of an ability would be broken on a different armor. As another commentor pointed out, the Gaea Armor at least has some utility in the game in that it lets you get some parts you can't reach otherwise, which I personally always viewed as being better than the Shadow Armor. Speaking of the Shadow Armor, I personally think it's one of, if not the single most overrated armor in the whole series, and while I do think it looks cool and there's an argument that it's abilities are overall better than the Gaea Armor (admittedly not by that much, in my opinion), it's ultimately just fairly pointless in the grand scheme of things, and I feel like people only like it better than the Gaea Armor because it looks cool. That said, don't get me wrong, the Shadow Armor is a cool armor, but the simple fact that you can play without using it whatsoever and still get everything and beat the game and arguably be better off for it just REALLY kills anything the Shadow Armor might have going for it over the Gaea Armor. Going into more detail about the Gaea Armor's abilities, it makes sense to me that it would be flawed, and not just for the reasons I mentioned earlier about game balancing, I mean actually think about it for a moment here: the reason why it has the flaws it has are in no small part because in-universe, with it being a prototype armor, it was probably the first attempt Dr Light made at creating such an invention. By that logic, he probably made it unable to use special weapons when equipped to X by mistake, as he hadn't yet figured out how to give X such an upgrade without it having that as a drawback. It's arguably for the same reasons why it's as heavy as it is: Dr Light probably made some miscalculations about how heavy the armor should be, thus resulting in it slowing X down. This also explains the shorter range the buster shots have, too, as well as the lack of an air dash, though the latter is at least partly due to the sheer weight of the armor; basically, as a prototype armor of sorts, the Gaea Armor had a good few kinks to work out in it's design. I think this is important to keep in mind when thinking about the limitations of the Gaea Armor, and I definitely do think it was designed that way intentionally, and I think that more people would appreciate it much more if they looked at it from that perspective instead of just how usable it is and how much of an "upgrade" the Shadow Armor is by comparison. The helmet not having a function that you're told about, on the other hand, is less excusable, though -- that's just laziness on the part of the developers, and I do think it has a function, given that there are certain things the armor lets X do that the other parts don't (at least as far as you're told), and the whole thing feels like an oversight to me, personally. Because of all this, I think that the Gaea Armor is a bit underrated by most, but I do agree that part of why people don't like it as much as they could is because you not only need all four parts first, but also the Falcon Armor to collect them -- but that's more of a flaw with X5 as a game in and of itself rather than any fault of the Gaea Armor itself.

X5's flaws really killed this armor the most, I definitely agree. I would love to just be able to use this armor and have free reign to have fun. Sure it's possible to get the full armor while only defeating two or three Mavericks and doing several purposeful Game Overs, but you shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops just to play with it, ya know? I love the limitations making it more fun to use, especially the Buster. Still sticking by needing a dash that does damage. Fits the design too well.

I straight up love the Gaea Armor. Yeah, it has flaws, but I chalk those up to the overall poor handling of X5. Using it well takes a lot of precision, but when mastered, the only stronger armor is the Shadow armor. It makes one of the worst bosses in Megaman history, the Black Devil, and turns it into a joke, not to mention how good it feels to beat the Flashman insta-death laser field with the clunky, slow armor and no Dark Hold. I don't disagree that the improvements suggested would be better. Even still, once I have the armor complete, I don't use anything else.

The Gaea Armour is one of my favourite armours in the series in terms of aesthetic. It's only behind the Ultimate Armour for me. TBH, I think the Gaea Armour is still good just for Gaea Shot alone. Yes, it has limited range but the fact that you get a shot this strong as a level 1 shot is crazy. You can absolutely tear through bosses with it thanks to the short charge time and reduced I-frame duration, and it's honestly my recommended pick for Virus Stage 4 if you're not using Ultimate Armour just for its ability to shred through the boss rush. But yeah, I think we should've been able to use uncharged special weapons with it and equip parts.

Thing is, this isn't the first time that the Dr. Light hologram fails to mention an ability of an armor piece. The X1 leg parts enable X's Dash ability, but the hologram doesn't mention until the Xtreme games on Game Boy Color that is also lets X break blocks by wall-jumping. Indeed, it is true in X1 as certain blocks in Sting Chameleon and Flame Mammoth's stages won't break without the Armor Part for X's feet. As mentioned before, there is an Energy Saver effect that kicks in with the combined Helmet and Body Armor Parts in X2. Dr. Light says nothing about it. In X3, Dr. Light talks about the satellite mapping system that the Helmet Part has, but this time the Helmet has a secondary Energy Saver effect all by itself without any other Armor Part. However, I do understand that the difference in X5 is that Dr. Light doesn't mention ANY functionality AT ALL for the Gaea Helmet. If only there were some way to test the Armor Pieces individually...

Because of Legacy Collection and its achievements, i made an extra run where i only started killing bosses after playing the stages many times (to waste the hours), which led me to get the Gaea armor with some bosses left still. And i had saw a video about the armor and decided to try it more. And yes, its movement takes one of the greatest parts of X games, the speed. But it was so fun for an extra run to just DESTROY bosses with that charged shots, that made me feel powerful enough to have fun and mitigate the cons. Still, it doesn't make sense for me why the armor couldn't have 1 slot for parts. Speedster, Jumper or Hyper Dash could work to make Gaea be normal speed in those regards. Would be cool and not too broken, as you would only be able to choose one. Anyways, for a first run is definitely the least interesting armor in the whole X series (until X6 at least, didn't played the others yet), as we are accostumed to get armors to feel MORE mobile usually. But in general, i would still place it pretty good in general just because it is really fun in extra runs to trivialize spike traps, grab onto walls and spam that busted charged shot (would love to replay all the X games using it). It was too much fun to use in the Zero and Sigma stages, boss rush and Sigma itself. I'm just sad that i didn't had the skill to make through Zero Stage 1 with it. Shadow Devil would cry blood.

After making this video, I made save files on X5 and X6 unlocking the armors with the minimum number of bosses defeated. It's fun being able to use the armors in stages, haha

Hot take: i think the only actual issue of the gaia armor is that it is in the wrong game. If capcom swapped shadow armor for gaea armor in X6 it would become the very best armor. There, i said it. And whoever says gaea armor is not worthy is straight up skill issue. There, is said it again. Other than the giga attack, Gaea's entire gimmick is reinforce unamored X's gameplay, and it does so well it becomes easy game cheat to anyone used to unarmored X runs like myself. The speed loss is negligible to anyone used to dash+jump, the lack of airdash is just normal as unarmored X never got one until PS2 era anyways. Everything else is a straight plus. I think gaea is only available in late game because most stages end up trivialized by it's skills. In the end the downfall of gaea armor is because we get force armor from the start fully upgraded, which already improves X's abilities without sacrificing mobility, which makes gaea redundant. This could be easily fixed by swapping it for shadow in X6. I could write an entire essay (or a 10+ minutes video) on how X6 is THE anti-X game instead of X7, as the devs clearly HATED X gameplay to the point it is basically unwinnable as unarmored X by design, and ALL of it's armors are basically a downgrade in X signature gameplay in order to make it a weaker Zero anyways. If there were a mod online to put Gaea in X6 anyone would see how superior it is specially for actually valuing X's game style

As bad as the Gaea Armor is, at least you can find uses for it, like getting some heart tanks or making Rangda Bangda a little easier (if you’re willing to struggle through Zero Stage 2 with it). But the Shadow Armor doesn’t get anything like that, any items that it would be helpful for can be obtained with careful air dashing or by sacrificing a life (which is pointless anyway due to the EX tank, the rescuable Reploids each giving one and the generous checkpoint system.) And we all know the problems with the Gate stages, be it mandatory air dashes or Nightmare Mother being nearly impossible to beat with it, which sucks because it’s otherwise great for that first stage.

Honestly the funniest thing to me is the considerable precision you need to even get the helmet part. You'd expect that given how difficult it was to obtain it, it must have some really cool effects right? Lolno Dr. Light just wants to troll X that day. Like I'd argue it'd be even worse if you can wear armor onstage since if you're wearing one of the other armors, then you're left with a deadweight helmet afterwards.
