I love the added detail of the tears flowing down John's face as he reads "repeat after me" and begins the ritual. Like he knows exactly what he is doing, but physically cannot stop himself from doing it. It's honestly terrifying and it's such an amazing detail

I’ve always imagined that Jon knows at the point where Jonah tells him to stop trying to look away because he’ll only hurt himself Jon’s eyes fill with tears and then realizes he can still See the words on the page, even with the world swimming in his tears. The text burned stagnant and clear in front of a world swimming, superimposed onto his vision.

The worst part of it is at that point in the story we had no reason to believe Elias/Jonah would or even could violate Jon in such a way. He liked Jon or at least Jon thought so, he hurt other people all the time but everything he'd done to/for Jon was "for his own good" and Jon believed that.
