A vlog or a short documentary film for festivals? The drama, the humour, the ingenuity, the musical score, the jeopardy, the grabber's shocked face and bodybuilder's arms, the impostor cap, the tenacity, the cinematography of that last grab and the tonal colour changes as THE cap rises to the surface... eventual triumph! Award-winning, surely? 🙌 I enjoyed that. 😄

Great video! I am from Finland and we have a word for your efforts: SISU. It cannot be translated but according to wikipedia: "Sisu is extraordinary determination in the face of extreme adversity, and courage that is presented typically in situations where success is unlikely. It expresses itself in taking action against the odds, and displaying courage and resoluteness in the face of adversity; in other words, deciding on a course of action, and then adhering to it even if repeated failures ensue."

I just loved this, partly because it stirred up some fond memories. (Why is it with boating that the ‘gone wrong’ incidents stick out as fond memories?) First of losing our water cap overboard on one of our first trips after we’d bought into a syndicate boat. Lucky for us we there was a chandler’s in walking distance. Also memories of my husband fishing around to try to retrieve his specs after they ended up in the water the first time we hired a boat. The boatyard had a handy rake reinforced with mesh…just the right implement. After a bit of raking, my husband found a pair of glasses…unfortunately not his! We gave up at that point and went off to the nearest pub for lunch. Fortunately, the afternoon’s raking session did turn up his specs. Phew!

Upon its release in the Criterion Collection sometime in the 2030s, the back of the case will cite influences like Wes Anderson's whimsy, James Cameron's underwater cinematography, the Blair Witch Project's gonzo filmmaking (particularly with the grabber lit shots), and not one but two Hans Zimmer-esque needle drops. The first being seen in the theatrical release and akin to Cameron Diaz running through the snow into Jude Law's arms, and the second in the Kendall-cut leaning more towards the trailer for Man of Steel.

IF you turn over the cap you might see a threaded screw where you can put a screw and loop to hold a small chain. The chain should be brass or stainless and be small and long enough to go into the tank. At the tank end a small weight that can hold the cap down. There are other ways to do this. Also one of the small chains that is made of flat links hooked together. Many boat fuel caps have something similar. Hint - don't use a lead fishing weight.

So, although this is way late in coming, but, what you need is a clamming rake, it’s a rake with a wire basket attached to it, so you can rake the bottom and pick up and filter sand and smaller things through the basket, getting your (and probably many others) cap back. Simple solution. They do cost $60-$80 U.S. but it would probably be a good thing to have on a narrow boat. Or you could probably build a similar rig with a regular iron rake and some wire if you can’t get them in the UK (although I’m assuming you have clams there so they should be available)
@pilpelet100

Wow! I'm so happy that you were able to get it back. Here's a thought for the people who manufacture these water caps - make them with some sort of loose chain to link them with the water filler neck. That way they'll always be attached. Mind you, if that system had applied to your water cap, there wouldn't have been a video! 🤣🤣

I really felt your pain. When we had not long had our boat last year, a freak of events saw our pump out cap end up in the river trent. Again magnet did not work and we had no net or camera etc. The chandlery at our marina only had the full housing for sale, no spare caps and it was late on a Sunday afternoon. We had no idea if a vaccuum toilet could function without a cap on the tank and we didn't want to risk splashback so a costly £50 mistake for us - but at least the standard cap fitted our boat. I loved watching this video so much, the perseverance and igenuity.

Any tech friends? Maybe have a few spares 3D printed just in case this happens again (touch wood). Or, you could possibly make a “natural” one out of cork. Have it attached to the boat in some sort of way or at the very least attach one of those yellow key ring floats to it - that way you can watch it floating away 🙂 P.s or get a strong neodymium magnet and attach it to the cap, just to make it a little easier if it ever decides to go deep sea diving again. The grabber video reminds me of those underwater deep sea missions. When they collect samples from the sea bed. A Jaques Cousteau voice over could have been very funny. 😂❤
@krisatomic

Great idea about 3d printing one actually! Is there some way to scan it in or something, will have to look into that! We’d actually love a 3d printer but no space on the boat 😅

When you stop for a moment to think about it, it's not very surprising that someone else dropped their cap in the exact same spot - your boat is a popular length so there are many that would have the inlet in the same spot when moored there. You have a very nice storytelling style.

Such a daft place to put the water inlet, totally asking for the cap to fall in! Now I know why hire boats tend to have two side compartments at the front, one of which contains the water inlet. You just drop the cap down in the compartment (anywhere) and it has no chance of escaping!

we know your pain. We do NOT have a boat, but a 40' fifth wheel that we tow with and hdt. Truck holds 200+ gallons of diesel. One time we went to fill up and grandson forgot to put cap back on. Didn't find out till we got home. Regular replacement caps were around 40-50 usd. and I got a wild hair and said has to have a safety chain. We got new ones, both tanks, cost us $45 each. The reason I am commenting is when you showed your cap, I saw a nut or something on the inside. I would suggest a piece of stainless chain and a piece of stainless bar. Stainless so won't mess with your water. just slip the bar down until it grabs inside of tank, then you will never loose it again cause the bar and chain will keep it from going anywhere. and by the way, I lost a boat fuel cap once, duck taped my grans strainer to a boat hook and finally got it..got my butt reamed too, for dirtying her strainer.

The first thing about her learns always put the water cap in your pocket or your fuel cap or are you clean out app now some people get caps that are attached with heavy duty attachment to the boat so it can't go overboard. Also very important your keys put your keys with a float if you don't we will find one day you'll have your keys in your hand and oops right in the drink and if you just put the float on your keys you have been able to get your keys it happens to every Booter not just Canal boats every motor in the world has had this problem the other thing you want to get it's a dehumidifier it's called a golden rod and if you put two or three in your boat what it'll do is he'll set up a just warmth in like closets and closed areas I don't keep mold from farming they're really good that's one of the other things about having a boat

Catching up on your channel of exceptional exceptions which also included capturing I don't really know why but a friend's boat along the way, 'Cheeky Pig' 😆 - utter beauty in the makings...

Did the same thing , used an endoscope & lowered myself in & picked it up with my toes 😂

Amazing, love the endoscope idea! If it was a bit warmer I think I would have gone in but I was really hoping to avoid it 😅

Scrub, scrub, scrub. If I scrub it enough, it'll turn into ours, won't it ? 😂

Wow that was alot of hard work. Amazing that you got it in the end. Could you get magnetic stickers to attach to anything small on boat? someone must have invented an idea to deal with this issue.

There’s supposed to be a chain! But the fastening screw is broken off and we can’t get it out. We’re now extra super careful with it 😂
